    Determining the relative roles of vicariance and selection in restricting gene flow between populations is of central importance to the evolutionary process of population divergence and speciation. Here we use molecular and morphological data to contrast the effect of isolation (by mountains and geographical distance) with that of ecological factors (altitudinal gradients) in promoting differentiation in the wedge-billed woodcreeper, Glyphorynchus spirurus, a tropical forest bird, in Ecuador. Tarsus length and beak size increased relative to body size with altitude on both sides of the Andes, and were correlated with the amount of moss on tree trunks, suggesting the role of selection in driving adaptive divergence. In contrast, molecular data revealed a considerable degree of admixture along these altitudinal gradients, suggesting that adaptive divergence in morphological traits has occurred in the presence of gene flow. As suggested by mitochondrial DNA sequence data, the Andes act as a barrier to gene flow between ancient subspecific lineages. Genome-wide amplified fragment length polymorphism markers reflected more recent patterns of gene flow and revealed fine-scale patterns of population differentiation that were not detectable with mitochondrial DNA, including the differentiation of isolated coastal populations west of the Andes. Our results support the predominant role of geographical isolation in driving genetic differentiation in G. spirurus, yet suggest the role of selection in driving parallel morphological divergence along ecological gradients

    Non-Peer ReviewedThe traditional peat legume inoculants are viewed by western Canadian farmers as being difficult to apply. Accordingly, more "user-friendly" inoculants are being developed to ensure more wide-spread inoculation of legumes. A liquid inoculant developed by LiphaTech was evaluated as a carrier for Rhizobium leguminosarum strains 99A1 for lentil and 128C56G for pea. These two strains survived at titres exceeding log 8.0 per mL for ten months at 5Ā°C and there was no loss of viability during shipping and handling. The Prairie Agricultural Machine Institute (PAMI) determined that the liquid inoculant gave a very flowable and uniform coverage of the seeds when applied through a grain auger and various types of seeding equipment. Liquid inoculant for pea and lentil resulted in yields equal or better than those observed for the traditional peat-based inoculant

    Experimental evolution of a sexually selected display in yeast

    The fundamental principle underlying sexual selection theory is that an allele conferring an advantage in the competition for mates will spread through a population. Remarkably, this has never been demonstrated empirically. We have developed an experimental system using yeast for testing genetic models of sexual selection. Yeast signal to potential partners by producing an attractive pheromone; stronger signallers are preferred as mates. We tested the effect of high and low levels of sexual selection on the evolution of a gene determining the strength of this signal. Under high sexual selection, an allele encoding a stronger signal was able to invade a population of weak signallers, and we observed a corresponding increase in the amount of pheromone produced. By contrast, the strong signalling allele failed to invade under low sexual selection. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, the spread of a sexually selected allele through a population, confirming the central assumption of sexual selection theory.     Preparing potential teachers for the transition from employment to teacher training: an evaluative case study of a Maths Enhancement Course

    In response to a UK government drive to improve maths teaching in schools, the South West London Maths Enhancement Course (MEC) has been set up though collaboration between three Higher Education institutions (HEIs) to provide an efficient route for non maths graduates in employment to upgrade their subject knowledge and give a smooth transition into teacher training (PGCE). An evaluation of the scheme, measured against Teacher Development Agency (TDA) objectives and success criteria agreed by university staff, involved thematic analysis of focus group discussions and interviews with students and staff during both the MEC and PGCE courses. This has revealed a high level of satisfaction and success related to a number of underlying issues, particularly around student recruitment, curriculum design, peer support and staff collaboration. The model offers an example of practice transferable to a range of programmes aimed at supporting students in the transition between levels and institutions

    Reducing bovine leukosis in dairy cattle

    Bovine leukosis virus (BLV) is a cancerous condition of tissues in which lymph nodes and lymphocytes are affected. Infected cattle may be identified by testing blood sera for BLV antibodies using the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test that requires 2 days for processing. Most dairy farms have infected animals, but the condition is not considered important because less than 1% of infected cattle show clinical signs. However, many of these cows are culled because of poor milk production or reproductive performance. Procedures for reducing and(or) eliminating the disease are outlined. Results obtained at the Kansas State University Dairy Teaching and Research Center demonstrate that feeding only colostrum and whole milk from BLV-negative cows to newborn and young calves is an effective method of reducing the incidence of BLV in future generations.; Dairy Day, 1996, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, 1996

    Magnetoroton instabilities and static susceptibilities in higher Landau levels

    We present analytical results concerning the magneto-roton instability in higher Landau levels evaluated in the single mode approximation. The roton gap appears at a finite wave vector, which is approximately independent of the LL index n, in agreement with numerical calculations in the composite-fermion picture. However, a large maximum in the static susceptibility indicates a charge density modulation with wave vectors q0(n)āˆ¼1/2n+1q_0(n)\sim 1/\sqrt{2n+1}, as expected from Hartree-Fock predictions. We thus obtain a unified description of the leading charge instabilities in all LLs.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
