Background-free detection of trapped ions
We demonstrate a Doppler cooling and detection scheme for ions with low-lying
D levels which almost entirely suppresses scattered laser light background,
while retaining a high fluorescence signal and efficient cooling. We cool a
single ion with a laser on the 2S1/2 to 2P1/2 transition as usual, but repump
via the 2P3/2 level. By filtering out light on the cooling transition and
detecting only the fluorescence from the 2P_3/2 to 2S1/2 decays, we suppress
the scattered laser light background count rate to 1 per second while
maintaining a signal of 29000 per second with moderate saturation of the
cooling transition. This scheme will be particularly useful for experiments
where ions are trapped in close proximity to surfaces, such as the trap
electrodes in microfabricated ion traps, which leads to high background scatter
from the cooling beam
Socially structured games
We generalize the concept of a cooperative non-transferable utility game by introducing a socially structured game. In a socially structured game every coalition of players can organize themselves according to one or more internal organizations to generate payoffs. Each admissible internal organization on a coalition yields a set of payoffs attainable by the members of this coalition. The strengths of the players within an internal organization depend on the structure of the internal organization and are represented by an exogenously given power vector. More powerful players have the power to take away payoffs of the less powerful players as long as those latter players are not able to guarantee their payoffs by forming a different internal organization within some coalition in which they have more power.we introduce the socially stable core as a solution concept that contains those payoffs that are both stable in an economic sense, i.e., belong to the core of the underlying cooperative game, and stable in a social sense, i.e., payoffs are sustained by a collection of internal organizations of coalitions for which power is distributed over all players in a balanced way. The socially stable core is a subset and therefore a refinement of the core. We show by means of examples that in many cases the socially stable core is a very small subset of the core.we will state conditions for which the socially stable core is non-empty. In order to derive this result, we formulate a new intersection theorem that generalizes the kkms intersection theorem. We also discuss the relationship between social stability and the wellknown concept of balancedness for ntu-games, a sufficient condition for non-emptiness of the core. In particular we give an example of a socially structured game that satisfies social stability and therefore has a non-empty core, but whose induced ntu-game does not satisfy balancedness in the general sense of billera
Standard and emerging CMR methods for mitral regurgitation quantification
Background
There are several methods to quantify mitral regurgitation (MR) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). The interoperability of these methods and their reproducibility remains undetermined.
Objective
To determine the agreement and reproducibility of different MR quantification methods by CMR across all aetiologies.
Methods
Thirty-five patients with MR were recruited (primary MR = 12, secondary MR = 10 and MVR = 13). Patients underwent CMR, including cines and four-dimensional flow (4D flow). Four methods were evaluated: MRStandard (left ventricular stroke volume - aortic forward flow by phase contrast), MRLVRV (left ventricular stroke volume - right ventricular stroke volume), MRJet (direct jet quantification by 4D flow) and MRMVAV (mitral forward flow by 4D flow - aortic forward flow by 4D flow). For all cases and MR types, 520 MR volumes were recorded by these 4 methods for intra−/inter-observer tests.
Results
In primary MR, MRMVAV and MRLVRV were comparable to MRStandard (P > 0.05). MRJet resulted in significantly higher MR volumes when compared to MRStandard (P < 0.05) In secondary MR and MVR cases, all methods were comparable. In intra-observer tests, MRMVAV demonstrated least bias with best limits of agreement (bias = −0.1 ml, −8 ml to 7.8 ml, P = 0.9) and best concordance correlation coefficient (CCC = 0.96, P < 0.01). In inter-observer tests, for primary MR and MVR, least bias and highest CCC were observed for MRMVAV. For secondary MR, bias was lowest for MRJet (−0.1 ml, Pdouble bondNS).
Conclusion
CMR methods of MR quantification demonstrate agreement in secondary MR and MVR. In primary MR, this was not observed. Across all types of MR, MRMVAV quantification demonstrated the highest reproducibility and consistency
Component efficient solutions in line-graph games with applications
Recently, applications of cooperative game theory to economic allocation problems have gained popularity. We investigate a class of cooperative games that generalizes some economic applications with a similar structure. These are the so-called line-graph games being cooperative TU-games in which the players are linearly ordered. Examples of situations that can be modeled like this are sequencing situations and water distribution problems. We define four properties with respect to deleting edges that each selects a unique component efficient solution on the class of line-graph games. We interpret these solutions and properties in terms of dividend distributions, and apply them to economic situations. © 2006 Springer-Verlag

Acute vasodilator response testing in the adult Fontan circulation using non-invasive 4D Flow MRI: a proof-of-principle study
Background: Pulmonary vasodilator therapy in Fontan patients can improve exercise tolerance. We aimed to assess the potential for non-invasive testing of acute vasodilator response using four-dimensional (D) flow MRI during oxygen inhalation. Materials and Methods: Six patients with well-functioning Fontan circulations were prospectively recruited and underwent cardiac MRI. Ventricular anatomical imaging and 4D Flow MRI were acquired at baseline and during inhalation of oxygen. Data were compared with six age-matched healthy volunteers with 4D Flow MRI scans acquired at baseline. Results: All six patients tolerated the MRI scan well. The dominant ventricle had a left ventricular morphology in all cases. On 4D Flow MRI assessment, two patients (Patients 2 and 6) showed improved cardiac filling with improved preload during oxygen administration, increased mitral inflow, increased maximum E-wave kinetic energy, and decreased systolic peak kinetic energy. Patient 1 showed improved preload only. Patient 5 showed no change, and patient 3 had equivocal results. Patient 4, however, showed a decrease in preload and cardiac filling/function with oxygen. Discussion: Using oxygen as a pulmonary vasodilator to assess increased pulmonary venous return as a marker for positive acute vasodilator response would provide pre-treatment assessment in a more physiological state - the awake patient. This proof-of-concept study showed that it is well tolerated and has shown changes in some stable patients with a Fontan circulation.</p
Computing an Extensive-Form Correlated Equilibrium in Polynomial Time
We present a polynomial-time algorithm for finding one extensive form correlated equilibrium (EFCE) for multiplayer extensive games with perfect recall. This the first such algorithm for an equilibrium notion for games of this generality. The EFCE concept has been defined by von Stengel and Forges [1]. Our algorithm extends the constructive existence proof and polynomial-time algorithm for finding a correlated equilibrium in succinctly representable games by Papadimitriou and Roughgarden [2,3]. We describe the set of EFCE with a polynomial number of consistency and incentive constraints, and exponentially many variables. The algorithm employs linear programming duality, the ellipsoid algorithm, and Markov chain steady state computations. We also sketch a possible interpretation of the variables in the dual system
