Enhanced THz transmission apertures through sub-wavelength annular apertures
We report on the development of a surface micromachined process for the fabrication of coaxial apertures surrounded by periodic grooves. The process uses a combination of copper electroforming and the negative epoxy based resist, SU8, as a thin flexible substrate. The device dimensions are suitable for the implementation of filters at THz frequencies, and measurements show a pass band centred around 1.5 THz. These devices could form the basis of the next generation of THz biosensors
Negative refraction and the spectral filtering of terahertz radiation by a photonic crystal prism
We demonstrate how micromachined photonic crystals can be used to negatively refract terahertz frequency light. The photonic crystals, which are constructed from conventional dielectric materials, manipulate the incident beam via interaction with their photonic bands. Consequently, we show that different components of a broadband beam incident on the structure may be positively or negatively refracted, depending upon its frequency and that the structure can be used as an effective spectral filter of THz radiation
Fermi acceleration in astrophysical jets
We consider the acceleration of energetic particles by Fermi processes (i.e.,
diffusive shock acceleration, second order Fermi acceleration, and gradual
shear acceleration) in relativistic astrophysical jets, with particular
attention given to recent progress in the field of viscous shear acceleration.
We analyze the associated acceleration timescales and the resulting particle
distributions, and discuss the relevance of these processes for the
acceleration of charged particles in the jets of AGNs, GRBs and microquasars,
showing that multi-component powerlaw-type particle distributions are likely to
occur.Comment: 6 pages, one figure; based on talk at "The multimessenger approach to

Implications of H.E.S.S. observations of pulsar wind nebulae
In this review paper on pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) we discuss the properties
of such nebulae within the context of containment against cross-field diffusion
(versus normal advection), the effect of reverse shocks on the evolution of
offset ``Vela-like'' PWN, constraints on maximum particle energetics, magnetic
field strength estimates based on spectral and spatial properties, and the
implication of such field estimates on the composition of the wind. A
significant part of the discussion is based on the High Energy Stereoscopic
System ({\it H.E.S.S.} or {\it HESS}) detection of the two evolved pulsar wind
nebulae Vela X (cocoon) and HESS J1825-137. In the case of Vela X (cocoon) we
also review evidence of a hadronic versus a leptonic interpretation, showing
that a leptonic interpretation is favored for the {\it HESS} signal. The
constraints discussed in this review paper sets a general framework for the
interpretation of a number of offset, filled-center nebulae seen by {\it HESS}.
These sources are found along the galactic plane with galactic latitudes
, where significant amounts of molecular gas is found. In these
regions, we find that the interstellar medium is inhomogeneous, which has an
effect on the morphology of supernova shock expansion. One consequence of this
effect is the formation of offset pulsar wind nebulae as observed.Comment: to appear in Springer Lecture Notes on Neutron Stars and Pulsars: 40

Efficacy and Safety of Three Antiretroviral Regimens for Initial Treatment of HIV-1: A Randomized Clinical Trial in Diverse Multinational Settings
Background:Antiretroviral regimens with simplified dosing and better safety are needed to maximize the efficiency of antiretroviral delivery in resource-limited settings. We investigated the efficacy and safety of antiretroviral regimens with once-daily compared to twice-daily dosing in diverse areas of the world. Methods and Findings:1,571 HIV-1-infected persons (47% women) from nine countries in four continents were assigned with equal probability to open-label antiretroviral therapy with efavirenz plus lamivudine-zidovudine (EFV+3TC-ZDV), atazanavir plus didanosine-EC plus emtricitabine (ATV+DDI+FTC), or efavirenz plus emtricitabine-tenofovir-disoproxil fumarate (DF) (EFV+FTC-TDF). ATV+DDI+FTC and EFV+FTC-TDF were hypothesized to be non-inferior to EFV+3TC-ZDV if the upper one-sided 95% confidence bound for the hazard ratio (HR) was ≤1.35 when 30% of participants had treatment failure. An independent monitoring board recommended stopping study follow-up prior to accumulation of 472 treatment failures. Comparing EFV+FTC-TDF to EFV+3TC-ZDV, during a median 184 wk of follow-up there were 95 treatment failures (18%) among 526 participants versus 98 failures among 519 participants (19%; HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.72-1.27; p = 0.74). Safety endpoints occurred in 243 (46%) participants assigned to EFV+FTC-TDF versus 313 (60%) assigned to EFV+3TC-ZDV (HR 0.64, CI 0.54-0.76; p<0.001) and there was a significant interaction between sex and regimen safety (HR 0.50, CI 0.39-0.64 for women; HR 0.79, CI 0.62-1.00 for men; p = 0.01). Comparing ATV+DDI+FTC to EFV+3TC-ZDV, during a median follow-up of 81 wk there were 108 failures (21%) among 526 participants assigned to ATV+DDI+FTC and 76 (15%) among 519 participants assigned to EFV+3TC-ZDV (HR 1.51, CI 1.12-2.04; p = 0.007).Conclusion: EFV+FTC-TDF had similar high efficacy compared to EFV+3TC-ZDV in this trial population, recruited in diverse multinational settings. Superior safety, especially in HIV-1-infected women, and once-daily dosing of EFV+FTC-TDF are advantageous for use of this regimen for initial treatment of HIV-1 infection in resource-limited countries. ATV+DDI+FTC had inferior efficacy and is not recommended as an initial antiretroviral regimen.Trial Registration:http://www.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00084136
Passband filters for terahertz radiation based on dual metallic photonic structures
This paper reports on the development of two-dimensional metallic microstructures for the filtering of terahertz radiation. These structures are fabricated using ultraviolet-based processing of thick SU8 resist. This micromachining technique enables the array patterns, dimensions, and consequently the filter characteristics to be readily defined. In particular, we demonstrate that a filter with an isolated near-square-shaped passband can be realized on the basis of a combination of two different metallic photonic arrays of optimized design
Scattering in THz imaging
A new mathematical method, the Phase Distribution Model, is devised for the calculation of attenuation and scattering of THz radiation in random materials. The accuracy of the approximation is tested by comparison with exact calculations and with experimental measurements on textiles and specially constructed phantoms
Micromachining for Terahertz Artificial Materials.
In this paper we report on the development of micromachined filters for operation at terahertz frequencies. SU8, a negative photodefinable epoxy, is used to define arrays of high aspect ratio rods which are subsequently sputter coated in gold to form the filter. We fabricate and test a filter with a fixed period but variable diameter along the length of the array. By moving the array in the terahertz beam we demonstrate the ability to mechanically tune specific filter characteristics from a single device
