Heuristic Refinement Method for the Derivation of Protein Solution Structures: Validation on Cytochrome B562
A method is described for determining the family of protein structures compatible with solution data obtained primarily from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Starting with all possible conformations, the method systematically excludes conformations until the remaining structures are only those compatible with the data. The apparent computational intractability of this approach is reduced by assembling the protein in pieces, by considering the protein at several levels of abstraction, by utilizing constraint satisfaction methods to consider only a few atoms at a time, and by utilizing artificial intelligence methods of heuristic control to decide which actions will exclude the most conformations. Example results are presented for simulated NMR data from the known crystal structure of cytochrome b562 (103 residues). For 10 sample backbones an average root-mean-square deviation from the crystal of 4.1 A was found for all alpha-carbon atoms and 2.8 A for helix alpha-carbons alone. The 10 backbones define the family of all structures compatible with the data and provide nearly correct starting structures for adjustment by any of the current structure determination methods
Depression, School Performance, and the Veridicality of Perceived Grades and Causal Attributions
An external criterion was assessed to test whether depressives have distorted perceptions of covariation information and whether their attributions are consistent with this information. Studentsâ actual and self-perceived grades, depression status, and attributions for failures were assessed. Furthermore, partici pants estimated average grades. Generally, self-perceived own past grades were inflated. Depressed students and those with low grades distorted their own grades (but not the average grade) more to their favor than individuals low in depression and those with high grades. Depression went along with lower actual grades and with internal, stable, and global failure attributions. Mood differences in attributions were not due to differences in previous grades. Depressed individuals drew (unrealistically) more depressogenic causal inferences when they perceived average grades to be low than when average grades were perceived to be high. However, they (realistically) attributed failure more in a depressogenic fashion than did nondepressives when their own grade history was low
An examination of equal access in athletic programs throughout public high schools in the United States
The mission of the U.S. Department of Education is âto promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal accessâ (www.ed.gov). As an extension of U.S. public education institutions, secondary afterschool programs involving physical activity are theoretically designed to enhance and support the educational mission of public schools. Yet, due to the hyper-commodification of youth sports, âequal accessâ in sport and physical activity is becoming increasingly limited to parameters grounded in highly competitive environments reflecting broader sport trends in society. An interesting paradox emerges in public school settings where the importance of physical activity for adolescents is also emphasized. However, in reality, the majority of public tax dollars funding extracurricular opportunities to be physically active are only for those who are highly competitive, physically literate and have the financial means to assist in the funding of their sport experiences. There are also issues related to gender in terms of who is being served. Therefore, it is importance to examine how public resources relating to physical activity and health are being unequally allocated in the public school setting.
Characterization of Photoreceivers for LISA
LISA will use quadrant photo receivers as front-end devices for the phase meter measuring the motion of drag-free test masses in both angular orientation and separation. We have set up a laboratory testbed for the characterization of photo receivers. Some of the limiting noise sources have been identified and their contribution has been either measured or determined from the measured data. We have built a photo receiver with a 0.5 mm diameter quadrant photodiode with an equivalent input noise of better than 1.8 pA/(square root of)Hz below 20 MHz and a 3 dB bandwidth of 34 MHz
Instability of Myelin Tubes under Dehydration: deswelling of layered cylindrical structures
We report experimental observations of an undulational instability of myelin
figures. Motivated by this, we examine theoretically the deformation and
possible instability of concentric, cylindrical, multi-lamellar membrane
structures. Under conditions of osmotic stress (swelling or dehydration), we
find a stable, deformed state in which the layer deformation is given by \delta
R ~ r^{\sqrt{B_A/(hB)}}, where B_A is the area compression modulus, B is the
inter-layer compression modulus, and h is the repeat distance of layers. Also,
above a finite threshold of dehydration (or osmotic stress), we find that the
system becomes unstable to undulations, first with a characteristic wavelength
of order \sqrt{xi d_0}, where xi is the standard smectic penetration depth and

Comparison of Relativistic Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions
We investigate the difference between those relativistic models based on
interpreting a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction as a perturbation of the
square of a relativistic mass operator and those models that use the method of
Kamada and Gl\"ockle to construct an equivalent interaction to add to the
relativistic mass operator. Although both models reproduce the phase shifts and
binding energy of the corresponding non-relativistic model, they are not
scattering equivalent. The example of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in
the one-photon-exchange approximation is used to study the sensitivity of
three-body observables to these choices. Our conclusion is that the differences
in the predictions of the two models can be understood in terms of the
different ways in which the relativistic and non-relativistic -matrices are
related. We argue that the mass squared method is consistent with conventional
procedures used to fit the Lorentz-invariant cross section as a function of the

Quantifying the anisotropy in the infrared emission of powerful AGN
We use restframe near- and mid-IR data of an isotropically selected sample of
quasars and radio galaxies at 1.0 \leq z \leq 1.4, which have been published
previously, to study the wavelength-dependent anisotropy of the IR emission.
For that we build average SEDs of the quasar subsample (= type 1 AGN) and radio
galaxies (= type 2 AGN) from ~1-17 {\mu}m and plot the ratio of both average
samples. From 2 to 8 {\mu}m restframe wavelength the ratio gradually decreases
from 20 to 2 with values around 3 in the 10{\mu}m silicate feature. Longward of
12{\mu}m the ratio decreases further and shows some high degree of isotropy at
15 {\mu}m (ratio ~1.4). The results are consistent with upper limits derived
from the X-ray/mid-IR correlation of local Seyfert galaxies. We find that the
anisotropy in our high-luminosity radio-loud sample is smaller than in
radio-quiet lower-luminosity AGN which may be interpreted in the framework of a
receding torus model with luminosity-dependent obscuration properties. It is
also shown that the relatively small degree of anisotropy is consistent with
