Task-phase-specific dynamics of basal forebrain neuronal ensembles.
Cortically projecting basal forebrain neurons play a critical role in learning and attention, and their degeneration accompanies age-related impairments in cognition. Despite the impressive anatomical and cell-type complexity of this system, currently available data suggest that basal forebrain neurons lack complexity in their response fields, with activity primarily reflecting only macro-level brain states such as sleep and wake, onset of relevant stimuli and/or reward obtainment. The current study examined the spiking activity of basal forebrain neuron populations across multiple phases of a selective attention task, addressing, in particular, the issue of complexity in ensemble firing patterns across time. Clustering techniques applied to the full population revealed a large number of distinct categories of task-phase-specific activity patterns. Unique population firing-rate vectors defined each task phase and most categories of task-phase-specific firing had counterparts with opposing firing patterns. An analogous set of task-phase-specific firing patterns was also observed in a population of posterior parietal cortex neurons. Thus, consistent with the known anatomical complexity, basal forebrain population dynamics are capable of differentially modulating their cortical targets according to the unique sets of environmental stimuli, motor requirements, and cognitive processes associated with different task phases
Evidence for a bound on the lifetime of de Sitter space
Recent work has suggested a surprising new upper bound on the lifetime of de
Sitter vacua in string theory. The bound is parametrically longer than the
Hubble time but parametrically shorter than the recurrence time. We investigate
whether the bound is satisfied in a particular class of de Sitter solutions,
the KKLT vacua. Despite the freedom to make the supersymmetry breaking scale
exponentially small, which naively would lead to extremely stable vacua, we
find that the lifetime is always less than about exp(10^(22)) Hubble times, in
agreement with the proposed bound.Comment: 28 page
On The Interaction Of D0-Brane Bound States And RR Photons
We consider the problem of the interaction between D0-brane bound state and
1-form RR photons by the world-line theory. Based on the fact that in the
world-line theory the RR gauge fields depend on the matrix coordinates of
D0-branes, the gauge fields also appear as matrices in the formulation. At the
classical level, we derive the Lorentz-like equations of motion for D0-branes,
and it is observed that the center-of-mass is colourless with respect to the
SU(N) sector of the background. Using the path integral method, the
perturbation theory for the interaction between the bound state and the RR
background is developed. We discuss what kind of field theory may be
corresponded to the amplitudes which are calculated by the perturbation
expansion in world-line theory. Qualitative considerations show that the
possibility of existence of a map between the world-line theory and the

Respiratory hospital admission risk near large composting facilities
AbstractBackgroundLarge-scale composting can release bioaerosols in elevated quantities, but there are few studies of health effects on nearby communities.MethodsA cross-sectional ecological small area design was used to examine risk of respiratory hospital admissions within 2500m of all 148 English large-scale composting facilities in 2008–10. Statistical analyses used a random intercept Poisson regression model at Census Output Area (COA) level (mean population 310). Models were adjusted for age, sex, deprivation and tobacco sales.ResultsAnalysing 34,963 respiratory hospital admissions in 4656 COAs within 250–2500m of a site, there were no significant trends using pre-defined distance bands of >250–750m, >750–1500m and >1500–2500m. Using a continuous measure of distance, there was a small non-statistically significant (p=0.054) association with total respiratory admissions corresponding to a 1.5% (95% CI: 0.0–2.9%) decrease in risk if moving from 251m to 501m. There were no significant associations for subgroups of respiratory infections, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.ConclusionThis national study does not provide evidence for increased risks of respiratory hospital admissions in those living beyond 250m of an outdoor composting area perimeter. Further work using better measures of exposure and exploring associations with symptoms and disease prevalence, especially in vulnerable groups, is recommended to support regulatory approaches
One-loop functions of a translation-invariant renormalizable noncommutative scalar model
Recently, a new type of renormalizable scalar model on
the Moyal space was proved to be perturbatively renormalizable. It is
translation-invariant and introduces in the action a term. We
calculate here the and functions at one-loop level for this
model. The coupling constant function is proved to have the
same behaviour as the one of the model on the commutative
. The function of the new parameter is also

Renormalization of the commutative scalar theory with harmonic term to all orders
The noncommutative scalar theory with harmonic term (on the Moyal space) has
a vanishing beta function. In this paper, we prove the renormalizability of the
commutative scalar field theory with harmonic term to all orders by using
multiscale analysis in the momentum space. Then, we consider and compute its
one-loop beta function, as well as the one on the degenerate Moyal space. We
can finally compare both to the vanishing beta function of the theory with
harmonic term on the Moyal space.Comment: 16 page
Probing F-theory With Multiple Branes
We study multiple 3-branes on an F theory orientifold. The world-volume
theory of the 3-branes is d=4, N=2 Sp(2k) gauge theory with an antisymmetric
tensor and four flavors of matter in the fundamental. The solution of this
gauge theory is found for vanishing bare mass of the antisymmetric tensor
matter, and massive fundamental matter. The integrable system underlying this

Twisted Open Strings from Closed Strings: The WZW Orientation Orbifolds
Including {\it world-sheet orientation-reversing automorphisms}
in the orbifold program, we construct the operator
algebras and twisted KZ systems of the general WZW {\it orientation orbifold}
. We find that the orientation-orbifold sectors corresponding
to each are {\it twisted open} WZW strings, whose
properties are quite distinct from conventional open-string orientifold
