Novel ingredients in the proof are the comparison of two rational approximations to ζ(3)\zeta (3) to produce non-trivial harmonic sum identities and the reduction of the resulting congruences between harmonic sums via a congruence between the Apéry numbers and another Apéry-like sequence

    Accuracy of computerized tomography in determining hepatic tumor size in patients receiving liver transplantation or resection

    Computerized tomography (CT) of liver is used in oncologic practice for staging tumors, evaluating response to treatment, and screening patients for hepatic resection. Because of the impact of CT liver scan on major treatment decisions, it is important to assess its accuracy. Patients undergoing liver transplantation or resection provide a unique opportunity to test the accuracy of hepatic-imaging techniques by comparison of finding of preoperative CT scan with those at gross pathologic examination of resected specimens. Forty-one patients who had partial hepatic resection (34 patients) or liver transplantation (eight patients) for malignant (30 patients) or benign (11 patients) tumors were evaluable. Eight (47%) of 17 patients with primary malignant liver tumors, four (31%) of 13 patients with metastatic liver tumors, and two (20%) of 10 patients with benign liver tumors had tumor nodules in resected specimens that were not apparent on preoperative CT studies. These nodules varied in size from 0.1 to 1.6 cm. While 11 of 14 of these nodules were 1.0 cm. These results suggest that conventional CT alone may be insufficient to accurately determine the presence or absence of liver metastases, extent of liver involvement, or response of hepatic metastases to treatment

    Oviposition Model for Timing Insecticide Sprays Against Plum Curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in New York State

    Plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst), feeding and oviposition on apples during spring was measured for 3 yr in a heavily infested orchard in New York State. A logistic model was formulated to relate cumulative fruit injury to cumulative heat units (degree-days base 10°C [DD10]) following petal fall. Cumulative plum curculio injury was well described by the model in the trees from which data for the model were collected. However, injury progressed faster and ended earlier in smaller trees at the same site and at a different site, probably because of differences in tree architecture. Field trials showed that protection of the fruit via insecticide residue was no longer necessary after the model predicted that 40% of the cumulative plum curculio oviposition and feeding cycle had been completed (171 DD10 after petal fall). Based on historical weather records, use of the model to schedule insecticide treatments would save 1 insecticide application nearly half the time compared with a standard of 3 insecticide applications. A delay between initial plum curculio feeding and oviposition, which coincides with the petal fall, phenophase, and steadily increasing damage, which is influenced by temperatures after petal fall was observed. The effectiveness of delaying insecticide treatments until the rate of plum curculio damage was rapidly increasing was compared with treatments applied at petal fall.     Emergence Patterns of Delia radicum (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) Populations from North Carolina and New York

    Cabbage maggot, Delia radicum (L.), populations from North Carolina (Fletcher and Scaly Mountain) and New York (Geneva and Highland) were surveyed to detect differences in the emergence pattern of flies from overwintered pupae. Populations from all locations consisted of different proportions of early- and later-emerging individuals. However, populations from New York consisted predominately of early-emerging individuals (≥90%), whereas populations from North Carolina were composed of a higher percentage of later-emerging individuals. Emergence patterns of F1 progeny from crosses between early- and later-emerging flies from Scaly Mountain demonstrated that emergence traits were genetically controlled. D. radicum phenology studies in North Carolina suggested that temporal isolation of the two types was halted by an extended period of aestivation during the summer months, which subsequently allowed the two populations to interbreed during the autumn months.     Without invoking the Markov approximation, we derive formulas for vibrational energy relaxation (VER) and dephasing for an anharmonic system oscillator using a time-dependent perturbation theory. The system-bath Hamiltonian contains more than the third order coupling terms since we take a normal mode picture as a zeroth order approximation. When we invoke the Markov approximation, our theory reduces to the Maradudin-Fein formula which is used to describe VER properties of glass and proteins. When the system anharmonicity and the renormalization effect due to the environment vanishes, our formulas reduce to those derived by Mikami and Okazaki invoking the path-integral influence functional method [J. Chem. Phys. 121 (2004) 10052].     Image resonance in the many-body density of states at a metal surface

    The electronic properties of a semi-infinite metal surface without a bulk gap are studied by a formalism that is able to account for the continuous spectrum of the system. The density of states at the surface is calculated within the GW approximation of many-body perturbation theory. We demonstrate the presence of an unoccupied surface resonance peaked at the position of the first image state. The resonance encompasses the whole Rydberg series of image states and cannot be resolved into individual peaks. Its origin is the shift in spectral weight when many-body correlation effects are taken into account

    Fibrin formation and platelet activation in patients with myocardial infarction and normal coronary arteries

    Coronary spasm is the mechanism most often postulated to explain the rare combination of myocardial infarction and angiographically normal coronary arteries, although the reported evidence for its role is circumstantial rather than conclusive. Whereas the importance of thrombosis in myocardial infarction is uncontested in the presence of significant coronary artery disease, there is little in vivo evidence for thrombosis in angiographically normal coronary arteries. Among 11 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing thrombolytic therapy with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) 3.2 ± 0.7h after onset of chest pain, and angiography 10.2 ± 4.5 days later, three young men had normal coronary arteries. Their cases are documented electrocadiographically, enzymatically and angiographically. Mean plasma levels of fibrinopeptide A (FPA) and beta-thromboglobulin (BTG) were clearly elevated before and during rtPA therapy: FPA 52 ± 41 ng ml-1, BTG 257 ± 46 ng ml-1. They did not differ significantly from corresponding mean plasma levels in the eight patients with severe coronary artery disease: FPA 67 ± 66 ng ml-1, BTG 181 ± 75 ng ml-1.
