    Propylthiocyclopentadiene: A new synthetic route to complexes of iron and group 4 transition metals. Molecular structure of (C5H4SCH2CH2CH3)(2)ZrCl2

    The use of the propylthio-substituted cyclopentadienylsodium salt leads to 1,1'-bis(propylthio) ferrocene and dichlorobis(propylthiocyclopentadienyl)zirconium, titanium or hafnium(IV). The structure of (C5H4SCH2CH2CH3)(2)ZrCl2 has been established by X-ray analysis (orthorhombic, Pbcn, a = 11.943(1) Angstrom, b = 6.883(2) Angstrom, c = 22.412(2) Angstrom, V = 1842.4(2) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, R(F) = 0.027). The complexes have been characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR and electrochemical studies. The physico chemical properties of 1,1'-bis(propylthio) ferrocene are discussed by a molecular approach at the extended Huckel level

    Glassiness Vs. Order in Densely Frustrated Josephson Arrays

    We carry out extensive Monte Carlo simulations on the Coulomb gas dual to the uniformly frustrated two dimensional XY model, for a sequence of frustrations f converging to the irraltional (3-sqrt 5)/2. We find in these systems a sharp first order equilibrium phase transition to an ordered vortex structure at a T_c which varies only slightly with f. This ordered vortex structure remains in general phase incoherent until a lower pinning transition T_p(f) that varies with f. We argue that the glassy behaviors reported for this model in earlier simulations are dynamic effects.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figure

    Logarithmic Corrections in the 2D XY Model

    Using two sets of high-precision Monte Carlo data for the two-dimensional XY model in the Villain formulation on square L×LL \times L lattices, the scaling behavior of the susceptibility χ\chi and correlation length Ο\xi at the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition is analyzed with emphasis on multiplicative logarithmic corrections (lnL)−2r(ln L)^{-2r} in the finite-size scaling region and (lnΟ)−2r(ln \xi)^{-2r} in the high-temperature phase near criticality, respectively. By analyzing the susceptibility at criticality on lattices of size up to 5122512^2 we obtain r=−0.0270(10)r = -0.0270(10), in agreement with recent work of Kenna and Irving on the the finite-size scaling of Lee-Yang zeros in the cosine formulation of the XY model. By studying susceptibilities and correlation lengths up to Ο≈140\xi \approx 140 in the high-temperature phase, however, we arrive at quite a different estimate of r=0.0560(17)r = 0.0560(17), which is in good agreement with recent analyses of thermodynamic Monte Carlo data and high-temperature series expansions of the cosine formulation.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX + 8 postscript figures.     Two phase transitions in the fully frustrated XYXY model

    The fully frustrated XYXY model on a square lattice is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is found at TKT≈0.446T_{\rm KT} \approx 0.446, followed by an ordinary Ising transition at a slightly higher temperature, Tc≈0.452T_c \approx 0.452. The non-Ising exponents reported by others, are explained as a failure of finite size scaling due to the screening length associated with the nearby Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.Comment: REVTEX file, 8 pages, 5 figures in uuencoded postscrip

    We use Monte Carlo simulations to map out the phase diagram of the two dimensional Coulomb gas on a square lattice, as a function of density and temperature.     Percolation properties of the 2D Heisenberg model

    We analyze the percolation properties of certain clusters defined on configurations of the 2--dimensional Heisenberg model. We find that, given any direction \vec{n} in O(3) space, the spins almost perpendicular to \vec{n} form a percolating cluster.     Observation of a New Type of Low Frequency Waves at Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

    We report on magnetic field measurements made in the innermost coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in its low activity state. Quasi-coherent, large-amplitude (ÎŽB/B∌1\delta B/B \sim 1), compressional magnetic field oscillations at ∌\sim 40 mHz dominate the immediate plasma environment of the nucleus. This differs from previously studied comet-interaction regions where waves at the cometary ion gyro-frequencies are the main feature. Thus classical pick-up ion driven instabilities are unable to explain the observations. We propose a cross-field current instability associated with newborn cometary ion currents as a possible source mechanism.Comment: 6 pages, 3 Figure
