    An Unconventional Union: Promoting Information Literacy through Assessment

    This year, as a result of a long core curriculum revision process, Information Literacy (IL) finally, for the first time, has been included in our university’s curriculum. However, whereas most IL programs are delivered to students either in discrete IL courses or through IL-flagged content courses (in either the core curriculum, the major, or both), we had to settle for something different: the inclusion of IL learning objectives in our new curriculum is driven entirely by university assessment. The Office of Accreditation and Assessment, in collaboration with academic departments and the Information and Research Literacy Implementation Committee identified four learning objectives of our new core curriculum that overlap with IL. Courses identified as meeting those core objectives have been scheduled for assessment, putting in motion a process whereby departments and individual instructors collaborate with the Office of Accreditation and Assessment, the newly-formed Information and Research Literacy Advisory Committee, and, ideally, departmental subject librarians. The explicit goal of this collaboration is to develop an assessment plan for the designated IL learning objective. However, as faculty and library leaders in the drive to include IL in the core, we see the assessment planning process as a means to achieve work that is more critical: ensuring that IL is taught explicitly, appropriately, and meaningfully. In our presentation we will share our university’s unusual approach to IL via assessment, including the advantages and challenges of this approach

    Perception of pain as a result of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances

    The aims of this study were to investigate the intensity, location and duration of patients' discomfort following insertion of orthodontic appliances, and to examine for interactions between patient age, gender, appliance type and the perception of pain. After insertion of orthodontic appliances, 170 patients received eight questionnaires, one they completed and returned after 4 h, then one daily for 7 days. The respondents' ages ranged from 8-53 years (median age 13 years 7 months); 45 per cent were male and 55 per cent female. Of the patients, 65 per cent reported pain after 4 h and 95 per cent after 24 h. After 7 days, 25 per cent of the patients still reported discomfort. Patients' pain intensity scores were significantly higher for the anterior than for the posterior teeth. On day 1, 16 per cent took analgesics and 18 per cent reported being awakened the first night. Comparing a 2 Ă— 4 appliance, a full appliance in one arch and in both arches, no statistical differences were found for reported pain frequency, general intensity of pain, pain at the teeth, discomfort when biting and chewing and analgesic consumption. The perception of general pain intensity, analgesic consumption, pain when eating and the influence of discomfort on daily life were all significantly greater in girls than in boys. Patients younger than 13 years reported pain significantly less frequently than the older patients. The highest frequency of pain was found in the group of 13-16 year olds.     Sum-over-states vs quasiparticle pictures of coherent correlation spectroscopy of excitons in semiconductors; femtosecond analogues of multidimensional NMR

    Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCS) based on the nonlinear optical response of excitons to sequences of ultrafast pulses, has the potential to provide some unique insights into carrier dynamics in semiconductors. The most prominent feature of 2DCS, cross peaks, can best be understood using a sum-over-states picture involving the many-body eigenstates. However, the optical response of semiconductors is usually calculated by solving truncated equations of motion for dynamical variables, which result in a quasiparticle picture. In this work we derive Green's function expressions for the four wave mixing signals generated in various phase-matching directions and use them to establish the connection between the two pictures. The formal connection with Frenkel excitons (hard-core bosons) and vibrational excitons (soft-core bosons) is pointed out.Comment: Accepted to Phys. Rev.

    There is a growing interest in academic and policy circles in the relationship between land use planning policy and housing supply. Housing researchers are interested in the extent to which planning policies and practises may be exacerbating housing affordability questions, while planning academics and practitioners focus on what effect their policies actually have on the characteristics of housing supply. Policies seeking a diversity of built form are underpinned by attempts to reduce energy consumption through smaller house sizes and the design of less car dependent suburbs. Urban Growth Boundaries (UGBs) and increased net housing densities seek to slow the expansion of cities into hinterlands and reduce travel costs. The impact of UGBs on house prices is one of a number of issues that remains contested (Nelson et al 2007; Buxton and Scheurer 2007)

    Bandgap engineering of sol-gel synthesized amorphous Zn1-xMgxO films

    Amorphous Zn1-xMgxO (alpha-Zn1-xMgxO) ternary alloy thin films across the full compositional range were synthesized by a low-cost sol-gel method on quartz substrates. The amorphous property of the alpha-Zn1-xMgxO films was verified by x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy revealed a smooth surface with sub-nanometer root-mean square roughness. The current phase segregation issue limiting application of crystalline Zn1-xMgxO with 38% \u3c x \u3c 75% was completely eliminated by growing amorphous films. Optical transmission measurements showed high transmissivity of more than 90% in the visible and near infrared regions, with optical bandgap tunability from 3.3 eV to more than 6.5 eV by varying the Mg content
