Characterization of the bubble cluster and velocity field in the focal region of a lithotripter
The cavitation bubble cluster and the velocity field in the focal region of a lithotripter are investigated. Images of the bubble cluster were captured which show the bubbles increasing in size over approximately 500 ÎŒs before collapsing rapidly. Velocity measurements were obtained using particle image velocimetry. A few milliseconds after the inception of cavitation the velocity field consisted of localized flows with maximum velocities and shear rates of the order of 100 mm sâ»Âč and 50 sâ»Âč respectively. At times 40 ms after cavitation an average uni-directional flow of the order of 10 mm sâ»Âč was observed. The mechanism by which the flow is generated is also considered
Total synthesis and biological evaluation of the tetramic acid based natural product harzianic acid and its stereoisomers
Financial support for this project was provided by Cancer Research UK (Grant No. C21383/A6950)The bioactive natural product harzianic acid was prepared for the first time in just six steps (longest linear sequence) with an overall yield of 22%. The identification of conditions to telescope amide bond formation and a Lacey-Dieckmann reaction into one pot proved important. The three stereoisomers of harzianic acid were also prepared, providing material for comparison of their biological activity. While all of the isomers promoted root growth, improved antifungal activity was unexpectedly associated with isomers in the enantiomeric series opposite that of harzianic acid.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Finding home: Black queer historical scholarship in the United States Part II
This essay surveys the extant historical and historically minded scholarship about the political, social, and cultural life of African American/black LGBT/queer. Characterizing this area of inquiry as âblack queer historical studies,â this essay addresses scholarsâ diverse approaches to the challenge of archival research, current scholarship about the intersecting histories of blackness and queerness in the United States, and four key topical concerns: black âlesbianâ histories, gender transgression, class, and community formation/politics.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/149251/1/hic312533.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/149251/2/hic312533_am.pd

Bryophyte stable isotope composition, diversity and biomass define tropical montane cloud forest extent.
Liverworts and mosses are a major component of the epiphyte flora of tropical montane forest ecosystems. Canopy access was used to analyse the distribution and vertical stratification of bryophyte epiphytes within tree crowns at nine forest sites across a 3400 m elevational gradient in Peru, from the Amazonian basin to the high Andes. The stable isotope compositions of bryophyte organic material (13C/12C and 18O/16O) are associated with surface water diffusive limitations and, along with C/N content, provide a generic index for the extent of cloud immersion. From lowland to cloud forest ÎŽ13C increased from -33â° to -27â°, while ÎŽ18O increased from 16.3â° to 18.0â°. Epiphytic bryophyte and associated canopy soil biomass in the cloud immersion zone was estimated at up to 45 t dry mass ha-1, and overall water holding capacity was equivalent to a 20 mm precipitation event. The study emphasizes the importance of diverse bryophyte communities in sequestering carbon in threatened habitats, with stable isotope analysis allowing future elevational shifts in the cloud base associated with changes in climate to be tracked.NERC PhD Studentshi
Estresse ocupacional e satisfação dos usuĂĄrios com os cuidados de saĂșde primĂĄrios em Portugal
The Portuguese primary healthcare sector has suffered changes due to a reform on the lines of the conceptual framework referred to by some authors as "New Public Management." These changes may be generating higher levels of occupational stress with a negative impact at individual and organizational levels. This study examines the experience of stress in 305 health professionals (physicians, nurses and clinical secretaries) and satisfaction with the services provided by them from 392 users. The population under scrutiny is taken from 10 type A and 10 type B Family Health Units (FHU). The results show that 84.2% of professionals report moderate to high levels of occupational stress with the nurses being those with higher levels. Users reported good levels of satisfaction, especially with the nursing services. There were no differences in stress level between type A and type B FHU, though there were at the level of user satisfaction of type B FHU users who show higher levels of satisfaction. It was seen that dimensions of user satisfaction were affected by stress related to excess work.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
New routes towards reutericyclin analogues
A range of N-acylpyrrolo[3,4-c]isoxazoles and derived N-5 acyltetramides has been prepared via a nitrile oxide dipolar cycloaddition approach, as analogues of the acyltetramic acid metabolite reutericyclin, of interest for their antibiotic potential against Gram-positive bacteria including hospital-acquired infections of resistant Clostridium difficile
