This paper reviews Lumbricidae records for Minnesota and reports on two collections in northern areas of the state. The first site, Itasca State Park, lies to the northwest with Maple-basswood representative of climax forest to the south and southeast and Spruce-fir stands representative of climax forest to the north and northeast (Buell and Gordon 1945). The Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC); site of the other collection, is near Duluth, 150 miles to the east, where the forests are largely coniferous. Here seven forest types, as described by Wenstrom (1973), and known to be used by American woodcock (Philohela minor), were sampled
Multimode pumping of optical parametric oscillators

(OPO’s) can be efficiently pumped using multimode,
divergent pump sources. The influence of pump beam divergence
and mode structure upon OPO performance is measured for both
noncritical phase-matching, and OPO’s with walkoff. Multimode
OPO pumping is shown to be efficient, provided appropriate
nonlinear crystals and OPO cavities are employed; the nonlinear
crystal must have sufficient angular acceptance to tolerate a
divergent pump; the OPO cavity must support modes that match
the divergence and spatial intensity characteristics of the pump.
For low-order pump modes, the OPO can be made to match the
mode of the pump. Higher order pump modes reduce the OPO
efficiency, and cause a saturation of efficiency with increasing
pump power. The efficiency is degraded in a similar fashion in
the presence of walkoff. Multimode pumping is more difficult
in longer OPO cavities due to increased buildup time of higher
order OPO modes
Low temperature magnetization and the excitation spectrum of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin rings
Accurate results are obtained for the low temperature magnetization versus
magnetic field of Heisenberg spin rings consisting of an even number N of
intrinsic spins s = 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2, 5/2, 3, 7/2 with nearest-neighbor
antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange by employing a numerically exact quantum Monte
Carlo method. A straightforward analysis of this data, in particular the values
of the level-crossing fields, provides accurate results for the lowest energy
eigenvalue E(N,S,s) for each value of the total spin quantum number S. In
particular, the results are substantially more accurate than those provided by
the rotational band approximation. For s <= 5/2, data are presented for all
even N <= 20, which are particularly relevant for experiments on finite
magnetic rings. Furthermore, we find that for s > 1 the dependence of E(N,S,s)
on s can be described by a scaling relation, and this relation is shown to hold
well for ring sizes up to N = 80 for all intrinsic spins in the range 3/2 <= s
<= 7/2. Considering ring sizes in the interval 8 <= N <= 50, we find that the
energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state approaches zero
proportional to 1/N^a, where a = 0.76 for s = 3/2 and a = 0.84 for s = 5/2.
Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of our present results for E(N,S,s) by
examining the Fe12 ring-type magnetic molecule, leading to a new, more accurate
estimate of the exchange constant for this system than has been obtained

Tracking the oxidative kinetics of carbohydrates, amino acids and fatty acids in the house sparrow using exhaled \u3csup\u3e13\u3c/sup\u3eCO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e
Clinicians commonly measure the 13CO2 in exhaled breath samples following administration of a metabolic tracer (breath testing) to diagnose certain infections and metabolic disorders. We believe that breath testing can become a powerful tool to investigate novel questions about the influence of ecological and physiological factors on the oxidative fates of exogenous nutrients. Here we examined several predictions regarding the oxidative kinetics of specific carbohydrates, amino acids and fatty acids in a dietary generalist, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). After administering postprandial birds with 20 mg of one of seven 13C-labeled tracers, we measured rates of 13CO2 production every 15 min over 2 h. We found that sparrows oxidized exogenous amino acids far more rapidly than carbohydrates or fatty acids, and that different tracers belonging to the same class of physiological fuels had unique oxidative kinetics. Glycine had a mean maximum rate of oxidation (2021 nmol min−1) that was significantly higher than that of leucine (351 nmol min−1), supporting our prediction that nonessential amino acids are oxidized more rapidly than essential amino acids. Exogenous glucose and fructose were oxidized to a similar extent (5.9% of dose), but the time required to reach maximum rates of oxidation was longer for fructose. The maximum rates of oxidation were significantly higher when exogenous glucose was administered as an aqueous solution (122 nmol min−1), rather than as an oil suspension (93 nmol min−1), supporting our prediction that exogenous lipids negatively influence rates of exogenous glucose oxidation. Dietary fatty acids had the lowest maximum rates of oxidation (2-6 nmol min−1), and differed significantly in the extent to which each was oxidized, with 0.73%, 0.63% and 0.21% of palmitic, oleic and stearic acid tracers oxidized, respectively
A note on the realignment criterion
For a quantum state in a bipartite system represented as a density matrix,
researchers used the realignment matrix and functions on its singular values to
study the separability of the quantum state. We obtain bounds for elementary
symmetric functions of singular values of realignment matrices. This answers
some open problems proposed by Lupo, Aniello, and Scardicchio. As a
consequence, we show that the proposed scheme by these authors for testing
separability would not work if the two subsystems of the bipartite system have

Influence of bottom topography on integral constraints in zonal flows with parameterized potential vorticity fluxes
An integral constraint for eddy fluxes of potential vorticity (PV), corresponding to global momentum conservation, is applied to two-layer zonal quasi-geostrophic channel flow. This constraint must be satisfied for any type of parameterization of eddy PV fluxes. Bottom topography strongly influence the integral constraint compared to a flat bottom channel. An analytical solution for the mean flow solution has been found by using asymptotic expansion in a small parameter which is the ratio of the Rossby radius to the meridional extent of the channel. Applying the integral constraint to this solution, one can find restrictions for eddy PV transfer coefficients which relate the eddy fluxes of PV to the mean flow. These restrictions strongly deviate from restrictions for the channel with flat bottom topography
