TURBULENT TRANSITION SIMULATION AND PARTICULATE CAPTURE MODELING WITH AN INCOMPRESSIBLE LATTICE BOLTZMANN METHOD

Derivation of an unambiguous incompressible form of the lattice Boltzmann equation is pursued in this dissertation. Further, parallelized implementation in developing application areas is researched. In order to achieve a unique incompressible form which clarifies the algorithm implementation, appropriate ansatzes are utilized. Through the Chapman-Enskog expansion, the exact incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are recovered. In initial studies, fundamental 2D and 3D canonical simulations are used to evaluate the validity and application, and test the required boundary condition modifications. Several unique advantages over the standard equation and alternative forms found in literature are found, including faster convergence, greater stability, and higher fidelity for relevant flows. Direct numerical simulation and large eddy simulation of transitional and chaotic flows are one application area explored with the derived incompressible form. A multiple relaxation time derivation is performed and implemented in a 2D cavity (direct simulation) and a 3D cavity (large eddy simulation). The Kolmogorov length scale, a function of Reynolds number, determines grid resolution in the 2D case. Comparison is made to the extensive literature on laminar flows and the Hopf bifurcation, and final transition to chaos is predicted. Steady and statistical properties in all cases are in good agreement with literature. In the 3D case the relatively new Vreman subgrid model provides eddy viscosity modeling. By comparing the center plane to the direct numerical simulation case, both steady and unsteady flows are found to be in good agreement, with a coarse grid, including prediction of the Hopf bifurcation. Multiphysics pore scale flow is the other main application researched here. In order to provide the substrate geometry, a straightforward algorithm is developed to generate random blockages producing realistic porosities and passages. Combined with advection-diffusion equations for conjugate heat transfer and soot particle transport, critical diesel particulate filtration phenomena are simulated. To introduce additional fidelity, a model is added which accounts for deposition caused by a variety of molecular and atomic forces. Detailed conclusions are presented to lay the groundwork for future extensions and improvements. Predominantly, higher lattice velocity large eddy simulation, improved parallelization, and filter regeneration

Whose Child Is This?: Genetic Analysis and Family Reunification Immigration in France

    Get PDF
In an attempt to limit fraudulent family reunification immigration and control how many migrants enter its borders, France statutorily implemented the use of DNA testing in family reunification immigration in late 2007. Where an immigrating child possesses suspicious documentation, and the child is seeking to reunite with his or her mother in France, the statute provides for voluntary DNA testing to establish that the child has a biological connection with the mother. The requirement of proof of a biological link between family members is diametrically opposed to family recognition policies that apply to French citizens, which emphasize the establishment of socialties rather than genetic links. This Note asserts that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) would find France\u27s 2007 immigration statute violative of the right to family life under § 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, as the statute creates a dual standard of family recognition for French citizens and immigrant families who are seeking to be unified in that country. In turn, this Note analyzes the public policy rationale behind the DNA testing statute and concludes that the statute could adversely affect desirable social standards. Finally, this Note analyzes how states can limit immigration and protect themselves from immigration fraud while also being mindful of human rights

An unbiased approach elucidates variation in (S)-(+)-linalool, a context-specific mediator of a tri-trophic interaction in wild tobacco

Plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) mediate many interactions, and the function of common VOCs is especially likely to depend on ecological context. We used a genetic mapping population of wild tobacco, Nicotiana attenuata, originating from a cross of 2 natural accessions from Arizona and Utah, separated by the Grand Canyon, to dissect genetic variation controlling VOCs. Herbivory-induced leaf terpenoid emissions varied substantially, while green leaf volatile emissions were similar. In a field experiment, only emissions of linalool, a common VOC, correlated significantly with predation of the herbivore Manduca sexta by native predators. Using quantitative trait locus mapping and genome mining,we identified an (S)-(+)-linalool synthase (NaLIS). Genome resequencing, gene cloning, and activity assays revealed that the presence/absence of a 766-bp sequence in NaLIS underlies the variation of linalool emissions in 26 natural accessions. We manipulated linalool emissions and composition by ectopically expressing linalool synthases for both enantiomers, (S)-(+)- and (R)-(−)-linalool, reported to oppositely affect M. sexta oviposition, in the Arizona and Utah accessions. We used these lines to test ovipositingmoths in increasingly complex environments. The enantiomers had opposite effects on oviposition preference, but themagnitude of the effect depended strongly both on plant genetic background, and complexity of the bioassay environment. Our study reveals that the emission of linalool, a common VOC, differs by orders-of-magnitude among geographically interspersed conspecific plants due to allelic variation in a linalool synthase, and that the response of a specialist herbivore to linalool depends on enantiomer, plant genotype, and environmental complexity

A blade for a turbine engine having a centerline. The blade comprises: a root section extending at an angle relative to the centerline; and an airfoil section extending from the root section. The root section is directly adjacent said airfoil section. In other words, the blade is neckless. The blade is part of a rotor assembly, and is preferably a fan blade
