    The role of managed coniferous forest in the conservation of reptiles

    Commercially managed coniferous forest is often considered detrimental to wildlife despite their early developmental growth stages being well utilised by some species from a number of different taxa. Our study investigated the use of different aged conifer plantations by reptiles in southern England using arrays of artificial refuges, placed within 20 plantations of varying age, to determine the presence of reptiles annually within each between 2009 and 2013. All six native British reptile species (adder Vipera berus, grass snake Natrix natrix, smooth snake Coronella austriaca, common lizard Zootoca vivipara, sand lizard Lacerta agilis, slow worm Anguis fragilis) occurred in conifer plantations. Excluding the slow worm, which occurred in plantations of all ages, the majority of reptile observations occurred in plantations up to 20 years old and where tree canopy cover was below 65% with the highest numbers occurring in 3–12 year old plantations with a canopy cover below 50%. The early stages of plantation growth are utilised well by reptiles but become increasingly unsuitable over time. Furthermore, the availability of suitable reptile habitat is transient, depending on the rate of tree growth, the timing and extent of tree thinning and felling operations, the size of the plantation units and their proximity to adjacent areas inhabited by reptiles. Our study shows that coniferous forests can be managed so that both timber production and biodiversity conservation can be achieved through the formation of a mosaic of relatively small, multi-aged plantations and that small changes in ground preparation and habitat management practices may further enhance its suitability for reptiles and, by implication, for species from other taxa. The results of our study also have pertinence for species conservation and biodiversity within similar managed forestry throughout the world

    Rotational Evolution During Type I X-Ray Bursts

    The rotation rates of six weakly-magnetic neutron stars accreting in low-mass X-ray binaries have most likely been measured by Type I X-ray burst observations with RXTE. The nearly coherent oscillations detected during the few seconds of thermonuclear burning are most simply understood as rotational modulation of brightness asymmetries on the neutron star surface. We show that, as suggested by Strohmayer and colleagues, the frequency changes of 1-2 Hz observed during bursts are consistent with angular momentum conservation as the burning shell hydrostatically expands and contracts. We calculate how vertical heat propagation through the radiative outer layers of the atmosphere and convection affect the coherence of the oscillation. We show that the evolution of the rotational profile depends strongly on whether the burning layers are composed of pure helium or mixed hydrogen/helium. Our results help explain the absence (presence) of oscillations from hydrogen-burning (helium-rich) bursts that was found by Muno and collaborators. We investigate angular momentum transport within the burning layers and the recoupling of the burning layers with the star. We show that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is quenched by the strong stratification, and that mixing between the burning fuel and underlying ashes by the baroclinic instability does not occur. However, the baroclinic instability may have time to operate within the differentially rotating burning layer, potentially bringing it into rigid rotation.Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal; minor corrections made to tables and figure

    Risky driving or risky drivers? Exploring driving and crash histories of illegal street racing offenders

    Illegal street racing has received increased attention in recent years from road safety professionals and the media as jurisdictions in Australia, Canada, and the United States have implemented laws to address the problem, which primarily involves young male drivers. Although some evidence suggests that the prevalence of illegal street racing is increasing, obtaining accurate estimates of the crash risk of this behavior is difficult because of limitations in official data sources. Although crash risk can be explored by examining the proportion of incidents of street racing that result in crashes, or the proportion of all crashes that involve street racing, this paper reports on the findings of a study that explored the riskiness of involved drivers. The driving histories of 183 male drivers with an illegal street racing conviction in Queensland, Australia, were compared with a random sample of 183 male Queensland drivers with the same age distribution. The offender group was found to have significantly more traffic infringements, license sanctions, and crashes than the comparison group. Drivers in the offender group were more likely than the comparison group to have committed infringements related to street racing, such as speeding, "hooning," and offenses related to vehicle defects or illegal modifications. Insufficient statistical capacity prevented full exploration of group differences in the type and nature of earlier crashes. It was concluded, however, that street racing offenders generally can be considered risky drivers who warrant attention and whose risky behavior cannot be explained by their youth alone

The objective was to determine the comparative susceptibility of 82 C. difficile clinical isolates (which included ribotype 027 isolates and isolates with reduced metronidazole susceptibility) to SMT19969, fidaxomicin, vancomycin and metronidazole and to determine the killing kinetics and post-antibiotic effects of SMT19969, fidaxomicin and vancomycin against C. difficile. METHODS: MICs were determined by agar incorporation. Killing kinetics and post-antibiotic effects were determined against C. difficile BI1, 630 and 5325 (ribotypes 027, 012 and 078, respectively). RESULTS: SMT19969 showed potent inhibition of C. difficile (MIC90=0.125 mg/L) and was markedly more active than either metronidazole (MIC90 = 8 mg/L) or vancomycin (MIC90 = 2 mg/L). There were no differences in susceptibility to SMT19969 between different ribotypes. Fidaxomicin was typically one doubling dilution more active than SMT19969 and both agents maintained activity against isolates with reduced susceptibility to metronidazole. In addition, SMT19969 was bactericidal against the C. difficile strains tested, with reductions in viable counts to below the limit of detection by 24 h post-inoculation. Vancomycin was bacteriostatic against all three strains. Fidaxomicin was bactericidal although reduced killing was observed at concentrations <20 × MIC against C. difficile BI1 (ribotype 027) compared with other strains tested. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that SMT19969 is associated with potent and bactericidal activity against the strains tested and support further investigation of SMT19969 as potential therapy for CDI.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
