    An experimental investigation of vortex breakdown on a delta wing

    An experimental investigation of vortex breakdown on delta wings at high angles is presented. Thin delta wings having sweep angles of 70, 75, 80 and 85 degrees are being studied. Smoke flow visualization and the laser light sheet technique are being used to obtain cross-sectional views of the leading edge vortices as they break down. At low tunnel speeds (as low as 3 m/s) details of the flow, which are usually imperceptible or blurred at higher speeds, can be clearly seen. A combination of lateral and longitudinal cross-sectional views provides information on the three dimensional nature of the vortex structure before, during and after breakdown. Whereas details of the flow are identified in still photographs, the dynamic characteristics of the breakdown process were recorded using high speed movies. Velocity measurements were obtained using a laser Doppler anemometer with the 70 degree delta wing at 30 degrees angle of attack. The measurements show that when breakdown occurs the core flow transforms from a jet-like flow to a wake-like flow

    For k >= 3, a k-angulation is a 2-connected plane graph in which every internal face is a k-gon. We say that a point set P admits a plane graph G if there is a straight-line drawing of G that maps V(G) onto P and has the same facial cycles and outer face as G. We investigate the conditions under which a point set P admits a k-angulation and find that, for sets containing at least 2k^2 points, the only obstructions are those that follow from Euler's formula.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Thoughts on Barnette's Conjecture

    We prove a new sufficient condition for a cubic 3-connected planar graph to be Hamiltonian. This condition is most easily described as a property of the dual graph. Let GG be a planar triangulation. Then the dual G∗G^* is a cubic 3-connected planar graph, and G∗G^* is bipartite if and only if GG is Eulerian. We prove that if the vertices of GG are (improperly) coloured blue and red, such that the blue vertices cover the faces of GG, there is no blue cycle, and every red cycle contains a vertex of degree at most 4, then G∗G^* is Hamiltonian. This result implies the following special case of Barnette's Conjecture: if GG is an Eulerian planar triangulation, whose vertices are properly coloured blue, red and green, such that every red-green cycle contains a vertex of degree 4, then G∗G^* is Hamiltonian. Our final result highlights the limitations of using a proper colouring of GG as a starting point for proving Barnette's Conjecture. We also explain related results on Barnette's Conjecture that were obtained by Kelmans and for which detailed self-contained proofs have not been published.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Criticality and the practice-based MA: An argument drawn from teaching on the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL)

    This paper considers the notion of 'criticality' in relation to the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL), the Teacher Development Agency (TDA)-funded masters programme for school teachers in England. After the two current cohorts complete the MTL in 2013 - one a cohort of Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) and one of more senior Teaching and Learning Responsibility holders (TLRs) - government funding will not be provided for any subsequent recruitment to the course. In light of this, debates around the MTL may be viewed as redundant, but we do need to acknowledge that there will be a cohort of students who hold a Masters in Teaching and Learning and for whom it is a valid qualification. Beyond this, discussion of what a masters course in education might consist of is still a relevant and urgent matter. Our argument in this paper draws upon our experience of working on the MTL but is, we submit, applicable more generally to the 'practice-based' masters courses that have proliferated in recent years. Our focus is upon criticality as an essential component of 'masterliness'. We consider briefly ways in which critique might be construed and practised before going on to argue that a certain idea of critique, which draws upon historical conceptions of education's role in serving the social good, is essential to educational practice and to claims to mastery in education. We conclude by drawing attention to difficulties that may be presented to teacherresearchers on master's courses that offer themselves as school-based programmes of professional development

    Electrocardiographic (ECG) criteria for determining left ventricular mass in young healthy men; data from the LARGE Heart study

    Background: Doubts remain over the use of the ECG in identifying those with increased left ventricular (LV) mass. This is especially so in young individuals, despite their high prevalence of ECG criteria for LV hypertrophy. We performed a study using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), which provides an in vivo non-invasive gold standard method of measuring LV mass, allowing accurate assessment of electrocardiography as a tool for defining LV hypertrophy in the young.Methods and results: Standard 12-lead ECGs were obtained from 101 Caucasian male army recruits aged (mean +/- SEM) 19.7 +/- 0.2 years. LV mass was measured using CMR. LV mass indexed to body surface area demonstrated no significant correlation with the Cornell Amplitude criteria or Cornell Product for LV hypertrophy. Moderate correlations were seen with the Sokolow-Lyon Amplitude (0.28) and Sokolow-Lyon Product (0.284). Defining LV hypertrophy as a body surface area indexed left ventricular mass of 93 g/m(2), calculated sensitivities [and specificities] were as follows; 38.7% [74.3%] for the Sokolow-Lyon criteria, 43.4% [61.4%] for the Sokolow-Lyon Product, 19.4% [91.4%] for Cornell Amplitude, and 22.6% [85.7%] for Cornell Product. These values are substantially less than those reported for older age groups.Conclusion: ECG criteria for LV hypertrophy may have little value in determining LV mass or the presence of LV hypertrophy in young fit males

    Microscopic mechanism for mechanical polishing of diamond (110) surfaces

    Mechanically induced degradation of diamond, as occurs during polishing, is studied using total--energy pseudopotential calculations. The strong asymmetry in the rate of polishing between different directions on the diamond (110) surface is explained in terms of an atomistic mechanism for nano--groove formation. The post--polishing surface morphology and the nature of the polishing residue predicted by this mechanism are consistent with experimental evidence.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Ensemble density-functional theory for ab-initio molecular dynamics of metals and finite-temperature insulators

    A new method is presented for performing first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations of systems with variable occupancies. We adopt a matrix representation for the one-particle statistical operator Gamma, to introduce a ``projected'' free energy functional G that depends on the Kohn-Sham orbitals only and that is invariant under their unitary transformations. The Liouville equation [ Gamma , H ] = 0 is always satisfied, guaranteeing a very efficient and stable variational minimization algorithm that can be extended to non-conventional entropic formulations or fictitious thermal distributions.Comment: 5 pages, two-column style with 2 postscript figures embedded.     New Consequences of Induced Transparency in a Double-Lambda scheme: Destructive Interference In Four-wave Mixing

    We investigate a four-state system interacting with long and short laser pulses in a weak probe beam approximation. We show that when all lasers are tuned to the exact unperturbed resonances, part of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field is strongly absorbed. The part which is not absorbed has the exact intensity required to destructively interfere with the excitation pathway involved in producing the FWM state. We show that with this three-photon destructive interference, the conversion efficiency can still be as high as 25%. Contrary to common belief,our calculation shows that this process, where an ideal one-photon electromagnetically induced transparency is established, is not most suitable for high efficiency conversion. With appropriate phase-matching and propagation distance, and when the three-photon destructive interference does not occur, we show that the photon flux conversion efficiency is independent of probe intensity and can be close to 100%. In addition, we show clearly that the conversion efficiency is not determined by the maximum atomic coherence between two lower excited states, as commonly believed. It is the combination of phase-matching and constructive interference involving the two terms arising in producing the mixing wave that is the key element for the optimized FWM generation. Indeed, in this scheme no appreciable excited state is produced, so that the atomic coherence between states |0> and |2> is always very small.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. A, 7 pages, 4 figure
