A preliminary shield design for a SNAP-8 power system
A preliminary shield design for a nuclear power system utilizing a SNAP-8 reactor for space base application is presented. A representative space base configuration was selected to set the geometry constraints imposed on the design. The base utilizes two independent power packages each with a reactor operating at 600 kwt and each producing about 50 kwe. The crew compartment is located about 200 feet from each reactor and is large enough in extent to intercept a total shadow angle of 60 deg measured about the center line of each reactor
Representation of Quantum Mechanical Resonances in the Lax-Phillips Hilbert Space
We discuss the quantum Lax-Phillips theory of scattering and unstable
systems. In this framework, the decay of an unstable system is described by a
semigroup. The spectrum of the generator of the semigroup corresponds to the
singularities of the Lax-Phillips -matrix. In the case of discrete (complex)
spectrum of the generator of the semigroup, associated with resonances, the
decay law is exactly exponential. The states corresponding to these resonances
(eigenfunctions of the generator of the semigroup) lie in the Lax-Phillips
Hilbert space, and therefore all physical properties of the resonant states can
be computed.
We show that the Lax-Phillips -matrix is unitarily related to the
-matrix of standard scattering theory by a unitary transformation
parametrized by the spectral variable of the Lax-Phillips theory.
Analytic continuation in has some of the properties of a method
developed some time ago for application to dilation analytic potentials.
We work out an illustrative example using a Lee-Friedrichs model for the

Positivity Constraints for Spin-Dependent Parton Distributions
We derive new positivity constraints on the spin-dependent structure
functions of the nucleon. These model independent results reduce conside\-rably
their domain of allowed values, in particular for the chiral-odd parton

Transverse Double-Spin Asymmetries for Muon Pair Production in pp-Collisions
We calculate the rapidity dependence of the transverse double-spin asymmetry
for the Drell-Yan process to next-to-leading order in the strong coupling.
Input transversity distributions are obtained by saturating the Soffer
inequality at a low hadronic mass scale. Results for the polarized BNL-RHIC
proton-proton collider and the proposed HERA-N fixed-target experiment are
presented, and the influence of the limited muon acceptance of the detectors on
measurements of the asymmetry is studied in detail.Comment: 7 pages including 5 figures; significantly shortened, to be published

Virtual photon structure functions and positivity constraints
We study the three positivity constraints among the eight virtual photon
structure functions, derived from the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and which are
hence model-independent. The photon structure functions obtained from the
simple parton model show quite different behaviors in a massive quark or a
massless quark case, but they satisfy, in both cases, the three positivity
constraints. We then discuss an inequality which holds among the unpolarized
and polarized photon structure functions , and
, in the kinematic region , where is the mass squared of the probe (target) photon, and we examine
whether this inequality is satisfied by the perturbative QCD results.Comment: 24 pages, 13 eps figure
Double-Spin Transverse Asymmetries in Drell-Yan Processes
We calculate the double-spin transverse asymmetries for the Drell-Yan lepton
pair production in p-p and p-anti p collisions. We assume the transverse and
the longitudinal polarization densities to be equal at a very small scale, as
it is suggested by confinement model results. Using a global fit for the
longitudinal distributions, we find transverse asymmetries of order of 10^-2 at

Information-theoretic significance of the Wigner distribution
A coarse grained Wigner distribution p_{W}(x,u) obeying positivity derives
out of information-theoretic considerations. Let p(x,u) be the unknown joint
PDF (probability density function) on position- and momentum fluctuations x,u
for a pure state particle. Suppose that the phase part Psi(x,z) of its Fourier
transform F.T.[p(x,u)]=|Z(x,z)|exp[iPsi(x,z)] is constructed as a hologram.
(Such a hologram is often used in heterodyne interferometry.) Consider a
particle randomly illuminating this phase hologram. Let its two position
coordinates be measured. Require that the measurements contain an extreme
amount of Fisher information about true position, through variation of the
phase function Psi(x,z). The extremum solution gives an output PDF p(x,u) that
is the convolution of the Wigner p_{W}(x,u) with an instrument function
defining uncertainty in either position x or momentum u. The convolution arises
naturally out of the approach, and is one-dimensional, in comparison with the
two-dimensional convolutions usually proposed for coarse graining purposes. The
output obeys positivity, as required of a PDF, if the one-dimensional
instrument function is sufficiently wide. The result holds for a large class of
systems: those whose amplitudes a(x) are the same at their boundaries
(Examples: states a(x) with positive parity; with periodic boundary conditions;

Next-to-leading Order Evolution of Transversity Distributions and Soffer's Inequality
We present a calculation of the two-loop splitting functions for the
evolution of the twist-2 `transversity' parton densities of transversely
polarized nucleons. We study the implications of our results for Soffer's

Impact of D0-D0bar mixing on the experimental determination of gamma
Several methods have been devised to measure the weak phase gamma using
decays of the type B+- --> D K+-, where it is assumed that there is no mixing
in the D0-D0bar system. However, when using these methods to uncover new
physics, one must entertain the real possibility that the measurements are
affected by new physics effects in the D0-D0bar system. We show that even
values of x_D and/or y_D around 10^{-2} can have a significant impact in the
measurement of sin^2{gamma}. We discuss the errors incurred in neglecting this
