Science and Applications Space Platform (SASP) End-to-End Data System Study

    Get PDF
The capability of present technology and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) to accommodate Science and Applications Space Platforms (SASP) payload user's requirements, maximum service to the user through optimization of the SASP Onboard Command and Data Management System, and the ability and availability of new technology to accommodate the evolution of SASP payloads were assessed. Key technology items identified to accommodate payloads on a SASP were onboard storage devices, multiplexers, and onboard data processors. The primary driver is the limited access to TDRSS for single access channels due to sharing with all the low Earth orbit spacecraft plus shuttle. Advantages of onboard data processing include long term storage of processed data until TRDSS is accessible, thus reducing the loss of data, eliminating large data processing tasks at the ground stations, and providing a more timely access to the data

The Global Rescue Alarm Net (GRAN): Concept and approaches

    Get PDF
The GRAN Experiment is designed to prove a world-wide search and rescue (SAR) system utilizing Omega navigation system signals and geo-synchronous satellites. In order to develop a SAR system, the original NASA Omega Position Locating Equipment (OPLE) experiments have been expanded by the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River. Specifically, a fourth frequency (10.880 KHz) has been added experimentally to two Omega transmitters. This will increase line of position (LOP) ambiguities from 72 nautical miles to 360 nmi apart. Algorithms have been developed to resolve the 360 nmi ambiguities. During September and October 1974, two series of tests were conducted with Lincoln Experimental Satellite 6 (LES-6) to demonstrate the position locating potential of the four-frequency Omega concept

Radio-continuum study of Large Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant J0509-6731

We present a detailed study of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations (λ\lambda = 20, 13, 6 & 3~cm) of supernova remnant (SNR) J0509--6731 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The remnant has a ring morphology with brightened regions towards the south-western limb. We also find a second brightened inner ring which is only seen in the radio-continuum. The SNR is almost circular, with a diameter ranging from 7 to 8~pc, and a steep radio spectral index between 36 and 3~cm of α=−0.73±0.02\alpha=-0.73\pm0.02, which is characteristic of younger SNRs. We also report detection of radially orientated polarisation across the remnant at 6~cm, with a mean fractional polarisation level of P≅P\cong~(26~±\pm~13)%. We find the magnetic field (∼\sim168~μ\muG) and Σ−D\Sigma - D (Σ=\Sigma = 1.1×10−191.1\times 10^{-19}~W m−2^{-2}~Hz−1^{-1}~sr−1^{-1} , D=D= 7.35~pc) to be consistent with other young remnants

Generalized Advanced Propeller Analysis System (GAPAS). Volume 2: Computer program user manual

    Get PDF
The Generalized Advanced Propeller Analysis System (GAPAS) computer code is described. GAPAS was developed to analyze advanced technology multi-bladed propellers which operate on aircraft with speeds up to Mach 0.8 and altitudes up to 40,000 feet. GAPAS includes technology for analyzing aerodynamic, structural, and acoustic performance of propellers. The computer code was developed for the CDC 7600 computer and is currently available for industrial use on the NASA Langley computer. A description of all the analytical models incorporated in GAPAS is included. Sample calculations are also described as well as users requirements for modifying the analysis system. Computer system core requirements and running times are also discussed
