Mesoscale simulations of surfactant dissolution and mesophase formation
The evolution of the contact zone between pure surfactant and solvent has
been studied by mesoscale simulation. It is found that mesophase formation
becomes diffusion controlled and follows the equilibrium phase diagram
adiabatically almost as soon as individual mesophases can be identified,

Theory of impedance networks: The two-point impedance and LC resonances
We present a formulation of the determination of the impedance between any
two nodes in an impedance network. An impedance network is described by its
Laplacian matrix L which has generally complex matrix elements. We show that by
solving the equation L u_a = lambda_a u_a^* with orthonormal vectors u_a, the
effective impedance between nodes p and q of the network is Z = Sum_a [u_{a,p}
- u_{a,q}]^2/lambda_a where the summation is over all lambda_a not identically
equal to zero and u_{a,p} is the p-th component of u_a. For networks consisting
of inductances (L) and capacitances (C), the formulation leads to the
occurrence of resonances at frequencies associated with the vanishing of
lambda_a. This curious result suggests the possibility of practical
applications to resonant circuits. Our formulation is illustrated by explicit

BASEL III: Long-term impact on economic performance and fluctuations
We assess the long-term economic impact of the new regulatory standards (the Basel III reform), answering the following questions. (1) What is the impact of the reform on long-term economic performance? (2) What is the impact of the reform on economic fluctuations? (3) What is the impact of the adoption of countercyclical capital buffers on economic fluctuations? The main results are the following. (1) Each percentage point increase in the capital ratio causes a median 0.09 percent decline in the level of steady state output, relative to the baseline. The impact of the new liquidity regulation is of a similar order of magnitude, at 0.08 percent. This paper does not estimate the benefits of the new regulation in terms of reduced frequency and severity of financial crisis, analysed in Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS, 2010b). (2) The reform should dampen output volatility; the magnitude of the effect is heterogeneous across models; the median effect is modest. (3) The adoption of countercyclical capital buffers could have a more sizeable dampening effect on output volatility. Avian malaria is absent in juvenile colonial herons (Ardeidae) but not Culex pipiens mosquitoes in the Camargue, Southern France
Apicomplexan blood parasites Plasmodium and Haemoproteus (together termed âAvian malariaâ) and Leucocytozoon are widespread, diverse vector-transmitted blood parasites of birds, and conditions associated with colonial nesting in herons (Ardeidae) and other waterbirds appear perfect for their transmission. Despite studies in other locations reporting high prevalence of parasites in juvenile herons, juvenile Little Egrets (Egretta garzetta) previously tested in the Camargue, Southern France, had a total absence of malaria parasites. This study tested the hypotheses that this absence was due to insufficient sensitivity of the tests of infection; an absence of infective vectors; or testing birds too early in their lives. Blood was sampled from juveniles of four species shortly before fledging: Little Egret (n = 40), Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis; n = 40), Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax, n = 40), and Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides; n = 40). Sensitive nested-Polymerase Chain Reaction was used to test for the presence of parasites in both birds and host-seeking female mosquitoes captured around the colonies. No malaria infection was found of in any of the heron species. Four different lineages of Plasmodium were detected in pooled samples of female Culex pipiens mosquitoes, including two in potentially infective mosquitoes. These results confirm that the absence of malaria parasites previously demonstrated in Little Egret is not due to methodological limitations. Although the prevalence of infection in mosquitoes was low, conditions within the colonies were suitable for transmission of Plasmodium. These colonial heron species may have evolved strategies for resisting malaria infection through physiological or behavioral mechanisms
Localization and Absorption of Light in 2D Composite Metal-Dielectric Films at the Percolation Threshold
We study in this paper the localization of light and the dielectric
properties of thin metal-dielectric composites at the percolation threshold and
around a resonant frequency where the conductivities of the two components are
of the same order. In particular, the effect of the loss in metallic components
are examined. To this end, such systems are modelized as random networks,
and the local field distribution as well as the effective conductivity are
determined by using two different methods for comparison: an exact resolution
of Kirchoff equations, and a real space renormalization group method. The
latter method is found to give the general behavior of the effective
conductivity but fails to determine the local field distribution. It is also
found that the localization still persists for vanishing losses. This result
seems to be in agreement with the anomalous absorption observed experimentally

The 2-10 keV unabsorbed luminosity function of AGN from the XMM-Newton LSS, CDFS and COSMOS surveys
The XMM-LSS, XMM-COSMOS, and XMM-CDFS surveys are complementary in terms of
sky coverage and depth. Together, they form a clean sample with the least
possible variance in instrument effective areas and PSF. Therefore this is one
of the best samples available to determine the 2-10 keV luminosity function of
AGN and its evolution. The samples and the relevant corrections for
incompleteness are described. A total of 2887 AGN is used to build the LF in
the luminosity interval 10^42-10^46 erg/s, and in the redshift interval
0.001-4. A new method to correct for absorption by considering the probability
distribution for the column density conditioned on the hardness ratio is
presented. The binned luminosity function and its evolution is determined with
a variant of the Page-Carrera method, improved to include corrections for
absorption and to account for the full probability distribution of photometric
redshifts. Parametric models, namely a double power-law with LADE or LDDE
evolution, are explored using Bayesian inference. We introduce the
Watanabe-Akaike information criterion (WAIC) to compare the models and estimate
their predictive power. Our data are best described by the LADE model, as
hinted by the WAIC indicator. We also explore the 15-parameter extended LDDE
model recently proposed by Ueda et al., and find that this extension is not
supported by our data. The strength of our method is that it provides:
un-absorbed non-parametric estimates; credible intervals for luminosity
function parameters; model choice according to which one has more predictive

Monte Carlo simulation of the transmission of measles: Beyond the mass action principle
We present a Monte Carlo simulation of the transmission of measles within a
population sample during its growing and equilibrium states by introducing two
different vaccination schedules of one and two doses. We study the effects of
the contact rate per unit time as well as the initial conditions on the
persistence of the disease. We found a weak effect of the initial conditions
while the disease persists when lies in the range 1/L-10/L ( being
the latent period). Further comparison with existing data, prediction of future
epidemics and other estimations of the vaccination efficiency are provided.
Finally, we compare our approach to the models using the mass action
principle in the first and another epidemic region and found the incidence
independent of the number of susceptibles after the epidemic peak while it
strongly fluctuates in its growing region. This method can be easily applied to
other human, animals and vegetable diseases and includes more complicated

SPIDERS: Selection of spectroscopic targets using AGN candidates detected in all-sky X-ray surveys
SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV
survey running in parallel to the eBOSS cosmology project. SPIDERS will obtain
optical spectroscopy for large numbers of X-ray-selected AGN and galaxy cluster
members detected in wide area eROSITA, XMM-Newton and ROSAT surveys. We
describe the methods used to choose spectroscopic targets for two
sub-programmes of SPIDERS: X-ray selected AGN candidates detected in the ROSAT
All Sky and the XMM-Newton Slew surveys. We have exploited a Bayesian
cross-matching algorithm, guided by priors based on mid-IR colour-magnitude
information from the WISE survey, to select the most probable optical
counterpart to each X-ray detection. We empirically demonstrate the high
fidelity of our counterpart selection method using a reference sample of bright
well-localised X-ray sources collated from XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift-XRT
serendipitous catalogues, and also by examining blank-sky locations. We
describe the down-selection steps which resulted in the final set of
SPIDERS-AGN targets put forward for spectroscopy within the eBOSS/TDSS/SPIDERS
survey, and present catalogues of these targets. We also present catalogues of
~12000 ROSAT and ~1500 XMM-Newton Slew survey sources which have existing
optical spectroscopy from SDSS-DR12, including the results of our visual
inspections. On completion of the SPIDERS program, we expect to have collected
homogeneous spectroscopic redshift information over a footprint of ~7500
deg for >85 percent of the ROSAT and XMM-Newton Slew survey sources having
optical counterparts in the magnitude range 17<r<22.5, producing a large and
highly complete sample of bright X-ray-selected AGN suitable for statistical
studies of AGN evolution and clustering.Comment: MNRAS, accepte
