Is the Tsallis entropy stable?
The question of whether the Tsallis entropy is Lesche-stable is revisited. It
is argued that when physical averages are computed with the escort
probabilities, the correct application of the concept of Lesche-stability
requires use of the escort probabilities. As a consequence, as shown here, the
Tsallis entropy is unstable but the thermodynamic averages are stable. We
further show that Lesche stability as well as thermodynamic stability can be
obtained if the homogeneous entropy is used as the basis of the formulation of
non-extensive thermodynamics. In this approach, the escort distribution arises
naturally as a secondary structure.Comment: 6 page
The impact of population-based faecal occult blood test screening on colorectal cancer mortality:a matched cohort study
BACKGROUND: Randomised trials show reduced colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality with faecal occult blood testing (FOBT). This outcome is now examined in a routine, population-based, screening programme. METHODS: Three biennial rounds of the UK CRC screening pilot were completed in Scotland (2000–2007) before the roll out of a national programme. All residents (50–69 years) in the three pilot Health Boards were invited for screening. They received a FOBT test by post to complete at home and return for analysis. Positive tests were followed up with colonoscopy. Controls, selected from non-pilot Health Boards, were matched by age, gender, and deprivation and assigned the invitation date of matched invitee. Follow-up was from invitation date to 31 December 2009 or date of death if earlier. RESULTS: There were 379 655 people in each group (median age 55.6 years, 51.6% male). Participation was 60.6%. There were 961 (0.25%) CRC deaths in invitees, 1056 (0.28%) in controls, rate ratio (RR) 0.90 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.83–0.99) overall and 0.73 (95% CI 0.65–0.82) for participants. Non-participants had increased CRC mortality compared with controls, RR 1.21 (95% CI 1.06–1.38). CONCLUSION: There was a 10% relative reduction in CRC mortality in a routine screening programme, rising to 27% in participants
Accumulation horizons and period-adding in optically injected semiconductor lasers
We study the hierarchical structuring of islands of stable periodic
oscillations inside chaotic regions in phase diagrams of single-mode
semiconductor lasers with optical injection. Phase diagrams display remarkable
{\it accumulation horizons}: boundaries formed by the accumulation of infinite
cascades of self-similar islands of periodic solutions of ever-increasing
period. Each cascade follows a specific period-adding route. The riddling of
chaotic laser phases by such networks of periodic solutions may compromise

Minor industrial crops in the Southern Africa region: an appraisal of developmental potential with special reference to interregional trade. (June-July 1995). Vol.1: The main report
This report presents the findings and conclusions arising from a team study carried out in June-August 1995 of the potential for development of 'minor industrial crops' in the Southern Africa region. The study focussed on spices, essential oils, gums, resins, natural colourants and castor oil. Information was gathered on markets and production by means of field studies in South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia and was supplemented by examination of trade statistics and discussions with overseas traders. Time constraints on the study precluded a thorough investigation of all topics and, therefore, the conclusions reached must be regarded as a first phase overview of the regional market and a preliminary identification of the more promising crops for future development
From Physical to Cyber: Escalating Protection for Personalized Auto Insurance
Nowadays, auto insurance companies set personalized insurance rate based on
data gathered directly from their customers' cars. In this paper, we show such
a personalized insurance mechanism -- wildly adopted by many auto insurance
companies -- is vulnerable to exploit. In particular, we demonstrate that an
adversary can leverage off-the-shelf hardware to manipulate the data to the
device that collects drivers' habits for insurance rate customization and
obtain a fraudulent insurance discount. In response to this type of attack, we
also propose a defense mechanism that escalates the protection for insurers'
data collection. The main idea of this mechanism is to augment the insurer's
data collection device with the ability to gather unforgeable data acquired
from the physical world, and then leverage these data to identify manipulated
data points. Our defense mechanism leveraged a statistical model built on
unmanipulated data and is robust to manipulation methods that are not foreseen
previously. We have implemented this defense mechanism as a proof-of-concept
prototype and tested its effectiveness in the real world. Our evaluation shows
that our defense mechanism exhibits a false positive rate of 0.032 and a false

The Automatic Real-Time GRB Pipeline of the 2-m Liverpool Telescope
The 2-m Liverpool Telescope (LT), owned by Liverpool John Moores University,
is located in La Palma (Canary Islands) and operates in fully robotic mode. In
2005, the LT began conducting an automatic GRB follow-up program. On receiving
an automatic GRB alert from a Gamma-Ray Observatory (Swift, INTEGRAL, HETE-II,
IPN) the LT initiates a special override mode that conducts follow-up
observations within 2-3 min of the GRB onset. This follow-up procedure begins
with an initial sequence of short (10-s) exposures acquired through an r' band
filter. These images are reduced, analyzed and interpreted automatically using
pipeline software developed by our team called "LT-TRAP" (Liverpool Telescope
Transient Rapid Analysis Pipeline); the automatic detection and successful
identification of an unknown and potentially fading optical transient triggers
a subsequent multi-color imaging sequence. In the case of a candidate brighter
than r'=15, either a polarimetric (from 2006) or a spectroscopic observation
(from 2007) will be triggered on the LT. If no candidate is identified, the
telescope continues to obtain z', r' and i' band imaging with increasingly
longer exposure times. Here we present a detailed description of the LT-TRAP
and briefly discuss the illustrative case of the afterglow of GRB 050502a,
whose automatic identification by the LT just 3 min after the GRB, led to the
acquisition of the first early-time (< 1 hr) multi-color light curve of a GRB

Space station automation of common module power management and distribution
The purpose is to automate a breadboard level Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) system which possesses many functional characteristics of a specified Space Station power system. The automation system was built upon 20 kHz ac source with redundancy of the power buses. There are two power distribution control units which furnish power to six load centers which in turn enable load circuits based upon a system generated schedule. The progress in building this specified autonomous system is described. Automation of Space Station Module PMAD was accomplished by segmenting the complete task in the following four independent tasks: (1) develop a detailed approach for PMAD automation; (2) define the software and hardware elements of automation; (3) develop the automation system for the PMAD breadboard; and (4) select an appropriate host processing environment
