    Get PDF
The orbit adjust maneuvers performed to raise the LANDSAT 5 spacecraft to mission altitude, synchronize it with the required groundtrack, and properly phase the spacecraft with LANDSAT-4 to provide an 8 day full Earth coverage cycle are described. Maneuver planning and evaluation procedures, data and analysis results for all maneuvers performed to date, the frozen orbit concept, and the phasing requirement between LANDSAT-4 and LANDSAT-5 are also examined

Understanding your pupil’s behaviour: a pilot study from two primary schools in Kent

The Solihull Approach was developed to help frontline workers be more effective in their work as they are in the ideal position to intervene early in any potential emotional or behavioural difficulty for a child. The Approach has been developed for both early years’ practitioners and those working with young people in their school years. The theoretical model has been developed from three concepts: containment, reciprocity, and behaviour management, taken from psychotherapeutic, child development and behavioural models respectively. A new programme specifically for schools, Understanding Your Pupils Behaviour, has been developed. At present most of the evaluation and research has been on the 0-5-year work with Health Visitors. Further work needs to look at the effectiveness of this in the school years and in other settings outside of the health sector. The piloting of the Solihull Approach in a school setting to help school staff better understand their pupils’ behaviour provides an ideal opportunity to assess the impact of the approach in this setting. A mixed method design combining both quantitative measures and qualitative interviews was used to assess the impact of the training. The study focuses on 2 primary schools, an experimental school that received the training and another matched control school. Data was collected pre-training and 6 months after the final training session. The teacher variables measured included anxiety, burnout, compassion satisfaction and fatigue, self-concept and teacher efficacy. Interviews with 7school staff who have received the training were undertaken. Quantitative statistical analysis found that six months after training, teachers in School A showed a statistically significant increase in satisfaction with their helping role, self-esteem, and teacher efficacy scores as well as a decrease in feeling burnt out/stressed. The teachers at School B who did not receive the training only showed an improvement in teacher efficacy over the period. Qualitative thematic analysis found that overall, the teachers found that following aspects useful: that they were offered a framework that underpinned all aspects of the work they do; focus on the relationships not only with pupils, but teachers, support staff and parents as well; and the focus on well-being and its link with learning. Conclusions should be treated tentatively due to limitations associated with samples size, matching of school and the inability to control for other factors

Land condition assessment tool : data analysis - March 2020 to March 2022

The Land Condition Assessment Tool (LCAT) has been developed by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), Management Practice Adoption team (MPA)—a component of the Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring, Modelling and Reporting Program (Paddock to Reef or P2R)—within the Rural Economic Development (RED) business group. The LCAT supports Queensland and Australian Government sustainable land management initiatives overseen by DAF, Resources and DES, as well as Natural Resource Management organisations, P2R delivery partners and others. The MPA has facilitated access to, and the state-wide implementation of the LCAT to a range of government and non-government organisations engaged in sustainable land management initiatives. From implementation in March 2020 to March 2022, 3,666 land condition assessment sites have been collected by more than 200 users state-wide. This is the largest contemporary land condition dataset in Australia and is expected to grow at more than 1500 sites per year. High level analysis of Site data indicates impacts on productivity and sustainability including species composition change, loss of perennial pasture density, soil erosion and presence of pest plants. A high-level summary of findings is contained in Part 1. An explanation and key notes on land condition indicators and their values are available throughout the document

Youth Offending Teams: A Grounded Theory of the Barriers and Facilitators to Young People Seeking Help from Mental Health Services

    Get PDF
Young people within the youth justice system experience three times higher rates of mental health problems than the general youth population yet are one of the least likely groups to seek help Very little theory or research is available within this population to explain these high rates of unmet need The study aimed to develop a theory about the barriers and facilitators that Youth Offending Team workers experience when supporting young people to access mental health services Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants eight Youth Offending Team workers two young people and a mental health worker Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim before being analysed using grounded theory This method was chosen to allow the in depth exploration of participants experiences and the development of theory within an under researched area Youth Offending Team workers appeared to play a crucial role in supporting a young person s help seeking from mental health services A preliminary model was developed which demonstrated the complex relationships between six identified factors which influenced this role Youth Offending Team workers would benefit from more support training and recognition of the key role they play in supporting young people to become ready for a referral to mental health services Mental health services could be well placed to provide this Clinical implications are discussed Further research is needed to develop our understanding of what influenced the help seeking of this vulnerable populatio

Inflation and the User Cost of Capital: Does Inflation Still Matter?

    Get PDF
In the late 1970s, many economists argued that the deleterious effects of inflation on the user cost of capital for U.S. firms were large. Since that time, the tax code has changed, the level of inflation has dropped significantly, and the of investment has evolved considerably. In this paper, we demonstrate that the net effect of these changes has--under reasonable assumptions--not relegated inflation to the sidelines. Indeed, we conclude that: (1) inflation, even at its relatively low current rates, continues to increase the user cost of capital significantly; (2) the marginal gain in investment in response to a percentage-point reduction in inflation is larger for lower levels of inflation; (3) the beneficial effects for steady-state consumption of lowering inflation even further than has been achieved to date would likely be significant; and (4) inflation has only a small impact on intratemporal distortion in the allocation of capital within the domestic business sector. We also show that the magnitude of the inflation effect on the user cost of capital is likely much smaller in open economies.

Dialogue as a source of positive emotions during cross-border post-acquisition socio-cultural integration

    Get PDF
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyse how dialogue can be used to promote post-acquisition socio-cultural integration. Specifically, it addresses questions regarding when and how companies can utilise dialogue to generate positivity regarding socio-cultural integration.Design/methodology/approachA single case study approach was adopted owing to its suitability for creating in-depth understanding in the context of socio-cultural integration. Primary data were collected via interviews, an employee satisfaction survey, and participant observation. Secondary data were obtained from the case company’s internal materials, such as strategies, integration workflows, and employee magazines. Analysis methods included descriptive statistics and thematic qualitative analysis.FindingsThe findings suggest that dialogue can be used to create positivity regarding socio-cultural integration throughout the stages of unfreezing, moving, and refreezing by actively engaging employees in voicing, listening, respecting, and suspending. It is proposed that cultural conflict during post-acquisition socio-cultural integration can be overcome through the generation of positivity; dialogue enables the collective management of emotions during post-acquisition integration by offering a platform for creating positivity and social cohesion; and due to its collaborative and engaging nature, dialogue provides an especially effective means of communication for overcoming cross-cultural conflict.Originality/valueTo the authors’ knowledge, this is the first attempt to showcase dialogue as a specific means of communication for creating positivity during cross-border socio-cultural integration. This study reached beyond comparative cultural research to offer views on positivity, emotion during socio-cultural integration, and dialogue as means for overcoming cross-cultural conflict.</jats:sec

Gravitational dynamics for all tensorial spacetimes carrying predictive, interpretable and quantizable matter

Only a severely restricted class of tensor fields can provide classical spacetime geometries, namely those that can carry matter field equations that are predictive, interpretable and quantizable. These three conditions on matter translate into three corresponding algebraic conditions on the underlying tensorial geometry, namely to be hyperbolic, time-orientable and energy-distinguishing. Lorentzian metrics, on which general relativity and the standard model of particle physics are built, present just the simplest tensorial spacetime geometry satisfying these conditions. The problem of finding gravitational dynamics---for the general tensorial spacetime geometries satisfying the above minimum requirements---is reformulated in this paper as a system of linear partial differential equations, in the sense that their solutions yield the actions governing the corresponding spacetime geometry. Thus the search for modified gravitational dynamics is reduced to a clear mathematical task.Comment: 47 pages, no figures, minor update

Tax Reforms and Investment: A Cross-Country Comparison

    Get PDF
We use firm-level panel data to explore the extent to which fixed investment responds to tax reforms in 14 OECD countries. Previous studies have often found that investment does not respond to changes in the marginal cost of investment. We identify some of the factors responsible for this finding and employ an estimation procedure that sidesteps the most important of them. In so doing, we find evidence of statistically and economically significant investment responses to tax changes in 12 of the 14 countries.
