Fully relativistic calculation of magnetic properties of Fe, Co and Ni adclusters on Ag(100)
We present first principles calculations of the magnetic moments and magnetic
anisotropy energies of small Fe, Co and Ni clusters on top of a Ag(100) surface
as well as the exchange-coupling energy between two single adatoms of Fe or Co
on Ag(100). The calculations are performed fully relativistically using the
embedding technique within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. The magnetic
anisotropy and the exchange-coupling energies are calculated by means of the
force theorem. In the case of adatoms and dimers of iron and cobalt we obtain
enhanced spin moments and, especially, unusually large orbital moments, while
for nickel our calculations predict a complete absence of magnetism. For larger
clusters, the magnitudes of the local moments of the atoms in the center of the
cluster are very close to those calculated for the corresponding monolayers.
Similar to the orbital moments, the contributions of the individual atoms to
the magnetic anisotropy energy strongly depend on the position, hence, on the
local environment of a particular atom within a given cluster. We find strong
ferromagnetic coupling between two neighboring Fe or Co atoms and a rapid,
oscillatory decay of the exchange-coupling energy with increasing distance

Improved age constraints for the AB Dor quadruple system - The binary nature of AB Dor B
We present resolved NACO photometry of the close binary AB Dor B in H- and
Ks-band. AB Dor B is itself known to be a wide binary companion to AB Dor A,
which in turn has a very low-mass close companion named AB Dor C. These four
known components make up the young and dynamically interesting system AB Dor,
which will likely become a benchmark system for calibrating theoretical
pre-main sequence evolutionary mass tracks for low-mass stars. However, for
this purpose the actual age has to be known, and this subject has been a matter
of discussion in the recent scientific literature. We compare our resolved
photometry of AB Dor Ba and Bb with theoretical and empirical isochrones in
order to constrain the age of the system. This leads to an age estimate of
about 50 to 100 Myr. We discuss the implications of such an age range for the
case of AB Dor C, and compare with other results in the literature.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&
SEOM clinical guidelines for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (2020)
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive tumour with dismal prognosis arising in the pleura and associated with asbestos exposure. Its incidence is on the rise worldwide. In selected patients with early-stage MPM, a maximal surgical cytoreduction in combination with additional antitumour treatment may be considered in selected patients assessed by a multidisciplinary tumor board. In patients with unresectable or advanced MPM, chemotherapy with platinum plus pemetrexed is the standard of care. Currently, no standard salvage therapy has been approved yet, but second-line chemotherapy with vinorelbine or gemcitabine is commonly used. Novel therapeutic approaches based on dual immunotherapy or chemotherapy plus immunotherapy demonstrated promising survival benefit and will probably be incorporated in the future
Magnetism of small V clusters embedded in a Cu fcc matrix: an ab initio study
We present extensive first principles density functional theory (DFT)
calculations dedicated to analyze the magnetic and electronic properties of
small V clusters (n=1,2,3,4,5,6) embedded in a Cu fcc matrix. We consider
different cluster structures such as: i) a single V impurity, ii) several
V dimers having different interatomic distance and varying local atomic
environment, iii) V and iv) V clusters for which we assume compact
as well as 2- and 1-dimensional atomic configurations and finally, in the case
of the v) V and vi) V structures we consider a square pyramid and a
square bipyramid together with linear arrays, respectively. In all cases, the V
atoms are embedded as substitutional impurities in the Cu network. In general,
and as in the free standing case, we have found that the V clusters tend to
form compact atomic arrays within the cooper matrix. Our calculated non
spin-polarized density of states at the V sites shows a complex peaked
structure around the Fermi level that strongly changes as a function of both
the interatomic distance and local atomic environment, a result that
anticipates a non trivial magnetic behavior. In fact, our DFT calculations
reveal, in each one of our clusters systems, the existence of different
magnetic solutions (ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic) with
very small energy differences among them, a result that could lead to the
existence of complex finite-temperature magnetic properties. Finally, we
compare our results with recent experimental measurements.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figure
Lung cancer in Spain: information from the Thoracic Tumors Registry (TTR study)
[Background] Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality worldwide. Although Spain contributes to global statistics related to cancer, it is difficult to discern aspects linked to clinical presentation of the disease or molecular testing. The Thoracic Tumor Registry (TTR) was created with the aim of filling this gap.[Methods] Observational cohort multicenter study performed in Spain, including patients with lung cancer or other types of thoracic tumors undergoing active treatment or palliative care only. Enrollment took place between August 2016 and December 2018. The evaluation included a review of demographic, epidemiological, clinical and molecular data.[Results] A total of 6,600 patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were recruited at 56 Spanish hospitals. The mean age at diagnosis was 64 years. The majority of patients (80%) presented with advanced disease, being adenocarcinoma the most frequent histological type. Up to 86% of patients were current- or ex-smokers, with men starting to smoke earlier than women (average age 17.9 vs. 19.2 years). Sixty-seven percent of patients underwent some type of molecular testing. Mutations in EGFR and KRAS genes were found in 18% and 28% of patients, respectively.[Conclusions] Our findings suggest that the TTR study accurately describes the clinical reality of lung cancer in Spain, including useful information on smoking status as well as molecular profiling and tumor histology, and can therefore be used to drive improvements in health care. Slow and ultra-rapid freezing protocols for cryopreserving roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) epididymal sperm collected at different times of year

The present work reports the most suitable period for collecting epididymal sperm and describes the effect of two cooling rates on the post-thaw quality of sperm. Testes were collected 24–48 h after death. Samples of sperm flushed from the epididymis were subjected to either (1) dilution in a Tris-citric acid-glucose-egg yolk-based medium with glycerol, and slow freezing in straws, or (2) dilution in the same extender but replacing the glycerol with 100 mM of sucrose, and ultra-rapid freezing in pellets. Sperm motility, acrosome and membrane integrity, morphometry and morphological abnormalities were analysed before and after cryopreservation. Spermatogenic activity was investigated via histological examination of testis sections. Several testes collected between April, May and September showed no spermatogenic activity. All those collected in June–August showed spermatogenic activity. No significant difference was detected in the cryoresistance ratios associated with the conventional slow freezing, between sperm collected during the pre-rutting (April–May) and rutting (June–August) periods. No significant differences were seen between the slow-frozen-thawed and the ultra-rapid-frozen-thawed sperm in terms of percentage of viable sperm or the percentage of sperm with morphological abnormalities. Slow freezing returned significantly better (P<0.05) values for post-thaw acrosome integrity (43.3% vs. 25.0%) and straight-line velocity (19 μm/s vs. 4 μm/s). For both freezing methods, sperm heads were smaller post-thawing than pre-freezing (P<0.001). In conclusion, both the pre-rutting and rutting season are suitable periods for freezing roe deer sperm. Early and late skin reactions to radiotherapy for breast cancer and their correlation with radiation-induced DNA damage in lymphocytes
INTRODUCTION: Radiotherapy outcomes might be further improved by a greater understanding of the individual variations in normal tissue reactions that determine tolerance. Most published studies on radiation toxicity have been performed retrospectively. Our prospective study was launched in 1996 to measure the in vitro radiosensitivity of peripheral blood lymphocytes before treatment with radical radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer, and to assess the early and the late radiation skin side effects in the same group of patients. We prospectively recruited consecutive breast cancer patients receiving radiation therapy after breast surgery. To evaluate whether early and late side effects of radiotherapy can be predicted by the assay, a study was conducted of the association between the results of in vitro radiosensitivity tests and acute and late adverse radiation effects. METHODS: Intrinsic molecular radiosensitivity was measured by using an initial radiation-induced DNA damage assay on lymphocytes obtained from breast cancer patients before radiotherapy. Acute reactions were assessed in 108 of these patients on the last treatment day. Late morbidity was assessed after 7 years of follow-up in some of these patients. The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) morbidity score system was used for both assessments. RESULTS: Radiosensitivity values obtained using the in vitro test showed no relation with the acute or late adverse skin reactions observed. There was no evidence of a relation between acute and late normal tissue reactions assessed in the same patients. A positive relation was found between the treatment volume and both early and late side effects. CONCLUSION: After radiation treatment, a number of cells containing major changes can have a long survival and disappear very slowly, becoming a chronic focus of immunological system stimulation. This stimulation can produce, in a stochastic manner, late radiation-related adverse effects of varying severity. Further research is warranted to identify the major determinants of normal tissue radiation response to make it possible to individualize treatments and improve the outcome of radiotherapy in cancer patients
Precision restoration: a necessary approach to foster forest recovery in the 21st century

impressive initiatives and commitments have been launched to plant billions of trees. However, resources are limited and the
success of any restoration effort should be maximized. Thus, restoration programs should seek to guarantee that what is
planted today will become an adult tree in the future, a simple fact that, however, usually receives little attention. Here, we advocate
for the need to focus restoration efforts on an individual plant level to increase establishment success while reducing negative
side effects by using an approach that we term “precision forest restoration” (PFR). The objective of PFR will be to ensure
that planted seedlings or sowed seeds will become adult trees with the appropriate landscape configuration to create functional
and self-regulating forest ecosystems while reducing the negative impacts of traditional massive reforestation actions. PFR can
take advantage of ecological knowledge together with technologies and methodologies from the landscape scale to the individual-
plant scale, and from the more traditional, low-tech approaches to the latest high-tech ones. PFR may be more expensive at
the level of individual plants, but will be more cost-effective in the long term if it allows for the creation of resilient forests able to
providemultiple ecosystemservices. PFR was not feasible a few years ago due to the high cost and low precision of the available
