    A review of the influence of physical condition parameters on a typical aerospace stress effect: Decompression sickness

    The study examines data on episodes of decompression sickness, particularly from recent Navy work in which the event occurred under multiple stress conditions, to determine the extent to which decompression sickness might be predicted on the basis of personal characteristics such as age, weight, and physical condition. Such information should ultimately be useful for establishing medical selection criteria to screen individuals prior to participation inactivities involving extensive changes in ambient pressure, including those encountered in space operations. The main conclusions were as follows. There is a definite and positive relationship between increasing age and weight and the likelihood of decompression sickness. However, for predictive purposes, the relationship is low. To reduce the risk of bends, particularly for older individuals, strenuous exercise should be avoided immediately after ambient pressure changes. Temperatures should be kept at the low end of the comfort zone. For space activities, pressure changes of over 6-7 psi should be avoided. Prospective participants in future missions such as the Space Shuttle should not be excluded on the basis of age, certainly to age 60, if their general condition is reasonably good and they are not grossly obese.     Detection limits for close eclipsing and transiting sub-stellar and planetary companions to white dwarfs in the WASP survey

    We used photometric data from the WASP (Wide-Angle Search for Planets) survey to explore the possibility of detecting eclipses and transit signals of brown dwarfs, gas giants and terrestrial companions in close orbit around white dwarfs. We performed extensive Monte Carlo simulations and we found that for Gaussian random noise WASP is sensitive to companions as small as the Moon orbiting a V∌V\sim12 white dwarf. For fainter stars WASP is sensitive to increasingly larger bodies. Our sensitivity drops in the presence of co-variant noise structure in the data, nevertheless Earth-size bodies remain readily detectable in relatively low S/N data. We searched for eclipses and transit signals in a sample of 194 white dwarfs in the WASP archive however, no evidence for companions was found. We used our results to place tentative upper limits to the frequency of such systems. While we can only place weak limits on the likely frequency of Earth-sized or smaller companions; brown dwarfs and gas giants (radius≃\simeq Rjup_{jup}) with periods ≀\leq0.2 days must certainly be rare (<10%<10\%). More stringent constraints requires significantly larger white dwarf samples, higher observing cadence and continuous coverage. The short duration of eclipses and transits of white dwarfs compared to the cadence of WASP observations appears to be one of the main factors limiting the detection rate in a survey optimised for planetary transits of main sequence stars.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Fabrication and Comprehensive Modeling of Ion-Exchanged Bragg Opitcal Add-Drop Multiplexers

    Optical add–drop multiplexers (OADMs) based on asymmetric Y branches and tilted gratings offer excellent-performance in wavelength-division multiplexed systems. To simplify waveguide fabrication, ion-exchange techniques appear to be an important option in photosensitive glasses. Optimum OADM performance depends on how accurately the waveguide fabrication process and tilted Bragg grating operation are understood and modeled. Results from fabrication and comprehensive modeling are compared for ion-exchange processes that use different angles of the tilted grating. The transmission and reflection spectra for the fabricated and simulated OADMs show excellent agreement. The OADM’s performance is evaluated in terms of the measured characteristics of the Y branches and tilted gratings

    On the relation between nuclear and nucleon Structure Functions and their moments

    Calculations of nuclear Structure Functions (SF) F_k^A(x,Q^2) routinely exploit a generalized convolution, involving the SF for nucleons F_k^N and the linking SF f^{PN,A} of a fictitious nucleus, composed of point-particles, with the latter usually expressed in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom. For finite Q^2 the approach seemed to be lacking a solid justification and the same is the case for recently proposed, effective nuclear parton distribution functions (pdf), which exactly reproduce the above-mentioned hadronically computed F_k^A. Many years ago Jaffe and West proved the above convolution in the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA) for the nuclear components in the convolution. In the present note we extend the above proof to include classes of nuclear Final State Interactions (FSI). One and the same function appears to relate parton distribution functions (pdf) in nuclei and nucleons, and SF for nuclear targets and for nucleons. That relation is the previously conjectured one,with an entirely different interpretation of f^{PN,A}. We conclude with an extensive analysis of moments of nuclear SF based on the generalized convolution. Characteristics of those moments are shown to be quite similar to the same for a nucleon. We conclude that the above evidences asymptotic freedom of a nucleon in a medium and not of a composite nucleus.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure

    Coma cluster object populations down to M_R~-9.5

    This study follows a recent analysis of the galaxy luminosity functions and colour-magnitude red sequences in the Coma cluster (Adami et al. 2007). We analyze here the distribution of very faint galaxies and globular clusters in an east-west strip of ∌42×7\sim 42 \times 7 arcmin2^2 crossing the Coma cluster center (hereafter the CS strip) down to the unprecedented faint absolute magnitude of MR∌−9.5_R \sim -9.5. This work is based on deep images obtained at the CFHT with the CFH12K camera in the B, R, and I bands. The analysis shows that the observed properties strongly depend on the environment, and thus on the cluster history. When the CS is divided into four regions, the westernmost region appears poorly populated, while the regions around the brightest galaxies NGC 4874 and NGC 4889 (NGC 4874 and NGC 4889 being masked) are dominated by faint blue galaxies. They show a faint luminosity function slope of -2, very significantly different from the field estimates. Results are discussed in the framework of galaxy destruction (which can explain part of the very faint galaxy population) and of structures infalling on to Coma.Comment: To be published in A&

    Aging and Rejuvenation with Fractional Derivatives

    We discuss a dynamic procedure that makes the fractional derivatives emerge in the time asymptotic limit of non-Poisson processes. We find that two-state fluctuations, with an inverse power-law distribution of waiting times, finite first moment and divergent second moment, namely with the power index mu in the interval 2<mu <3, yields a generalized master equation equivalent to the sum of an ordinary Markov contribution and of a fractional derivative term. We show that the order of the fractional derivative depends on the age of the process under study. If the system is infinitely old, the order of the fractional derivative, ord, is given by ord=3-mu . A brand new system is characterized by the degree ord=mu -2. If the system is prepared at time -ta<0$ and the observation begins at time t=0, we derive the following scenario. For times 0<t<<ta the system is satisfactorily described by the fractional derivative with ord=3-mu . Upon time increase the system undergoes a rejuvenation process that in the time limit t>>ta yields ord=mu -2. The intermediate time regime is probably incompatible with a picture based on fractional derivatives, or, at least, with a mono-order fractional derivative.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Alignments of the Dominant Galaxies in Poor Clusters

    We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness. We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of material into clusters along large-scale filaments.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Acute reduction in secretory immunoglobulin A following smoking cessation

    Smokers report an increase in upper respiratory infections in the early phase of stopping smoking. One possible cause is a depletion in secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA) which has been observed in one study. The present study sought to establish this finding in smokers using nicotine patches. Ninety-two smokers, trying to stop smoking, were assessed whilst smoking and for up to six weeks of abstinence. All smokers were prescribed 15 mg 16-h nicotine patches. Among abstinent smokers, changes in S-IgA and saliva volume were assessed. During the preliminary analyses, we observed that for the pre-smoking cessation measure a longer time since the last cigarette was significantly related to Lower S-IgA levels (P = 0.006). Consequently, the main analysis, of changes in S-IgA from pre-cessation to post-cessation, was confined to those who had smoked within 0.5-1.5 h of the pre-cessation measure (n = 51). There was a significant decline in S-IgA, relative to pre-smoking abstinence levels, following abstinence of one day (P = 0.027), but Levels returned to pre-abstinence values after one week. There was no evidence of any significant changes in saliva volume following smoking cessation, relative to pre-cessation levels. Users of 15 mg patches are likely to experience a decline in S-IgA levels on the first day of smoking cessation, independent of saliva volumes, and this decline in S-IgA is Likely to occur acutely, within the first few hours of smoking abstinence. This acute drop in S-IgA appears to stem from a factor other than depletion of nicotine from the body. The observed decrease in S-IgA may help to explain the increased susceptibility of smokers to upper respiratory tract infections in the immediate post-cessation period. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.     Buried Ion-Exchanged Glass Wavelengths: Burial-Depth Dependence on Waveguide Width

    A detailed theoretical and experimental study of the depth dependence of buried ion-exchanged waveguides on waveguide width is reported. Modeling, which includes the effect of nonhomogeneous time-dependent electric field distribution, agrees well with our experiments showing that burial depth increases linearly with waveguide width. These results may be used in the proper design of integrated optical circuits that need waveguides of different widths at different sections, such as arrayed waveguide gratings

    The luminous late-time emission of the type Ic supernova iPTF15dtg - evidence for powering from a magnetar?

    iPTF15dtg is a Type Ic supernova (SN) showing a broad light curve around maximum light, consistent with massive ejecta if we assume a radioactive-powering scenario. We study the late-time light curve of iPTF15dtg, which turned out to be extraordinarily luminous for a stripped-envelope (SE) SN. We compare the observed light curves to those of other SE SNe and also with models for the 56^{56}Co decay. We analyze and compare the spectra to nebular spectra of other SE SNe. We build a bolometric light curve and fit it with different models, including powering by radioactivity, magnetar powering, as well as a combination of the two. Between 150 d and 750 d past explosion, iPTF15dtg's luminosity declined by merely two magnitudes instead of the six magnitudes expected from 56^{56}Co decay. This is the first spectroscopically-regular SE SN showing this behavior. The model with both radioactivity and magnetar powering provides the best fit to the light curve and appears to be the more realistic powering mechanism. An alternative mechanism might be CSM interaction. However, the spectra of iPTF15dtg are very similar to those of other SE SNe, and do not show signs of strong CSM interaction. iPTF15dtg is the first spectroscopically-regular SE SN whose light curve displays such clear signs of a magnetar contributing to the powering of the late time light curve. Given this result, the mass of the ejecta needs to be revised to a lower value, and therefore the progenitor mass could be significantly lower than the previously estimated >>35 M⊙M_{\odot}.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
