    Developmental design, fabrication, and test of acoustic suppressors for fans of high bypass turbofan engines

    An analysis procedure was developed for design of acoustically treated nacelles for high bypass turbofan engines. The plan was applied to the conceptual design of a nacelle for the quiet engine typical of a 707/DC-8 airplane installation. The resultant design was modified to a test nacelle design for the NASA Lewis quiet fan. The acoustic design goal was a 10 db reduction in effective perceived fan noise levels during takoff and approach. Detailed nacelle designs were subsequently developed for both the quiet engine and the quiet fan. The acoustic design goal for each nacelle was 15 db reductions in perceived fan noise levels from the inlet and fan duct. Acoustically treated nacelles were fabricated for the quiet engine and quiet fan for testing. Performance of selected inlet and fan duct lining configurations was experimentally evaluated in a flow duct. Results of the tests show that the linings perform as designed

    The scale of homogeneity in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey

    We analyse the Las Campanas Redshift Survey using the integrated conditional density (or density of neighbors) in volume-limited subsamples up to unprecedented scales (200 Mpc/hh) in order to determine without ambiguity the behavior of the density field. We find that the survey is well described by a fractal up to 20-30 Mpc/hh, but flattens toward homogeneity at larger scales. Although the data are still insufficient to establish with high significance the expected homogeneous behavior, and therefore to rule out a fractal trend to larger scales, a fit with a CDM-like spectrum with high normalization well represents the data.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted on Ap.J.     We present an exact stationary {\it axially symmetric} vacuum solution of metric-affine gravity (MAG) which generalises the recently reported spherically symmetric solution. Besides the metric, it carries nonmetricity and torsion as post-Riemannian geometrical structures.     Pressure of thermal excitations in superfluid helium

    We find the pressure, due to the thermal excitations of superfluid helium, at the interface with a solid. The separate contributions of phonons, R−R^- rotons and R+R^+ rotons are derived. The pressure due to R−R^- rotons is shown to be negative and partially compensates the positive contribution of R+R^+ rotons, so the total roton pressure is positive but several times less than the separate R−R^- and R+R^+ roton contributions. The pressure of the quasiparticle gas is shown to account for the fountain effect in HeIIHeI I. An experiment is proposed to observe the negative pressure due to R−R^- rotons.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Boron-doped Czochralski silicon samples with [B]~1017 cm−3 have been heated at various temperatures in the range 800–1300 °C in an atmosphere of hydrogen and then quenched. The concentration of [H-B] pairs was measured by infrared localized vibrational mode spectroscopy.     Vapor detection is one of the most effective ways to find hidden plastic-bonded explosives in the field today. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that providing near-resonant vibratory excitation to explosives dramatically increases their vapor pressure, allowing for easier detection. Unfortunately, there currently exists a limited understanding of the thermomechanics of energetic material. This study seeks to help fill this technical void by exploring the thermomechanics of mock plastic-bonded explosives using direct mechanical excitation with varying thermal conditions. Using two different ambient thermal boundary conditions (insulated geometric boundaries and boundaries with free convection), a 7 by 10 by 0.5 HTPB/Ammonium Chloride particulate-composite plate was tested by fixing it to an electrodynamic shaker and vibrating the sample at low frequencies (under 1000 Hz). Vibratory and thermal data was collected using a Polytec scanning laser Doppler vibrometer and a FLIR infrared camera. It was determined that insulating boundary conditions, allow the mock energetic material temperature to increase significantly as compared to the convective boundaries under near-resonant excitation. Future work will investigate alternate thermal boundary and initial conditions, as well as alternate mock energetic materials
