Storage of organically produced crops (OF0127T)
This is the final report of Defra Project OF0127T.
The main objective of this review was to establish best storage practice for field vegetables, potatoes, cereals and top fruit. A literature review was carried out and information was also gathered from the industry. Information relevant to growers and farmers has been drawn together to provide a comprehensive base from which technical advisory leaflets can be produced. The costs of different storage methods are provided, and case studies used wherever possible.
In general, organic crops can be stored using the same methods as conventional crops but there is an increased risk that sometimes there will be higher storage losses because pesticides and sprout suppressants are not used. On the whole, specific problems with pests and diseases can be avoided using good organic husbandry techniques and by storing undamaged, healthy crops. In the case of cereals storage at correct moisture content and temperatures can avoid pests and moulds. However, there are some areas where more technical development or research would be useful and these have been identified.
Relatively few organic growers store vegetables, but in order to maintain a supply of good quality UK produce throughout the year, more long term cold storage space is required (either on farm or in co-operative type stores). Based on the limited data available, economic analysis revealed that long term storage of organic vegetables has generally not been profitable. However, as the market expands in the future, it is likely that storage will become as essential for vegetables as it is for organic cereals and fruit
Real space first-principles derived semiempirical pseudopotentials applied to tunneling magnetoresistance
In this letter we present a real space density functional theory (DFT)
localized basis set semi-empirical pseudopotential (SEP) approach. The method
is applied to iron and magnesium oxide, where bulk SEP and local spin density
approximation (LSDA) band structure calculations are shown to agree within
approximately 0.1 eV. Subsequently we investigate the qualitative
transferability of bulk derived SEPs to Fe/MgO/Fe tunnel junctions. We find
that the SEP method is particularly well suited to address the tight binding
transferability problem because the transferability error at the interface can
be characterized not only in orbital space (via the interface local density of
states) but also in real space (via the system potential). To achieve a
quantitative parameterization, we introduce the notion of ghost semi-empirical
pseudopotentials extracted from the first-principles calculated Fe/MgO bonding
interface. Such interface corrections are shown to be particularly necessary
for barrier widths in the range of 1 nm, where interface states on opposite
sides of the barrier couple effectively and play a important role in the
transmission characteristics. In general the results underscore the need for
separate tight binding interface and bulk parameter sets when modeling
conduction through thin heterojunctions on the nanoscale.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physic
Capital structure and its determinants in the United Kingdom – a decompositional analysis
Prior research on capital structure by Rajan and Zingales (1995) suggests that the level of gearing in UK companies is positively related to size and tangibility, and negatively correlated with profitability and the level of growth opportunities. However, as argued by Harris and Raviv (1991), 'The interpretation of results must be tempered by an awareness of the difficulties involved in measuring both leverage and the explanatory variables of interest'. In this study the focus is on the difficulties of measuring gearing, and the sensitivity of Rajan and Zingales' results to variations in gearing measures are tested. Based on an analysis of the capital structure of 822 UK companies, Rajan and Zingales' results are found to be highly definitional-dependent. The determinants of gearing appear to vary significantly, depending upon which component of debt is being analysed. In particular, significant differences are found in the determinants of long- and short-term forms of debt. Given that trade credit and equivalent, on average, accounts for more than 62% of total debt, the results are particularly sensitive to whether such debt is included in the gearing measure. It is argued, therefore, that analysis of capital structure is incomplete without a detailed examination of all forms of corporate debt
Asymptotic motion of a single vortex in a rotating cylinder
We study numerically the behavior of a single quantized vortex in a rotating
cylinder. We study in particular the spiraling motion of a vortex in a cylinder
that is parallel to the rotation axis. We determine the asymptotic form of the
vortex and its axial and azimuthal propagation velocities under a wide range of
parameters. We also study the stability of the vortex line and the effect of

Modifications of Gait as Predictors of Natural Osteoarthritis Progression in STR/Ort Mice
OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic disease for which disease-modifying therapies are not currently available. Studies to seek new targets for slowing the progress of OA rely on mouse models, but these do not allow for longitudinal monitoring of disease development. This study was undertaken to determine whether gait can be used to measure disease severity in the STR/Ort mouse model of spontaneous OA and whether gait changes are related to OA joint pain. METHODS: Gait was monitored using a treadmill-based video system. Correlations between OA severity and gait at 3 treadmill speeds were assessed in STR/Ort mice. Gait and pain behaviors of STR/Ort mice and control CBA mice were analyzed longitudinally, with monthly assessments. RESULTS: The best speed to identify paw area changes associated with OA severity in STR/Ort mice was found to be 17 cm · seconds(−1). Paw area was modified with age in CBA and STR/Ort mice, but this began earlier in STR/Ort mice and correlated with the onset of OA at 20 weeks of age. In addition, task noncompliance appeared at 20 weeks. Surprisingly, STR/Ort mice did not show any signs of pain with OA development, even when treated with the opioid antagonist naloxone, but did exhibit normal pain behaviors in response to complete Freund's adjuvant–induced arthritis. CONCLUSION: The present results identify an animal model in which OA severity and OA pain can be studied in isolation from one another. The findings suggest that paw area and treadmill noncompliance may be useful tools to longitudinally monitor nonpainful OA development in STR/Ort mice. This will help in providing a noninvasive means of assessing new therapies to slow the progression of OA
A decade of ejecta dust formation in the Type IIn SN 2005ip
In order to understand the contribution of core-collapse supernovae to the
dust budget of the early universe, it is important to understand not only the
mass of dust that can form in core-collapse supernovae but also the location
and rate of dust formation. SN 2005ip is of particular interest since dust has
been inferred to have formed in both the ejecta and the post-shock region
behind the radiative reverse shock. We have collated eight optical archival
spectra that span the lifetime of SN 2005ip and we additionally present a new
X-shooter optical-near-IR spectrum of SN 2005ip at 4075d post-discovery. Using
the Monte Carlo line transfer code DAMOCLES, we have modelled the blueshifted
broad and intermediate width H, H and He I lines from 48d to
4075d post-discovery using an ejecta dust model. We find that dust in the
ejecta can account for the asymmetries observed in the broad and intermediate
width H, H and He I line profiles at all epochs and that it is
not necessary to invoke post-shock dust formation to explain the blueshifting
observed in the intermediate width post-shock lines. Using a Bayesian approach,
we have determined the evolution of the ejecta dust mass in SN 2005ip over 10
years presuming an ejecta dust model, with an increasing dust mass from

Interactions In Space For Archaeological Models
In this article we examine a variety of quantitative models for describing
archaeological networks, with particular emphasis on the maritime networks of
the Aegean Middle Bronze Age. In particular, we discriminate between those
gravitational networks that are most likely (maximum entropy) and most

Extended Huckel theory for bandstructure, chemistry, and transport. II. Silicon
In this second paper, we develop transferable semi-empirical parameters for
the technologically important material, silicon, using Extended Huckel Theory
(EHT) to calculate its electronic structure. The EHT-parameters areoptimized to
experimental target values of the band dispersion of bulk-silicon. We obtain a
very good quantitative match to the bandstructure characteristics such as
bandedges and effective masses, which are competitive with the values obtained
within an orthogonal-tight binding model for silicon. The
transferability of the parameters is investigated applying them to different
physical and chemical environments by calculating the bandstructure of two
reconstructed surfaces with different orientations: Si(100) (2x1) and Si(111)
(2x1). The reproduced - and -surface bands agree in part
quantitatively with DFT-GW calculations and PES/IPES experiments demonstrating
their robustness to environmental changes. We further apply the silicon
parameters to describe the 1D band dispersion of a unrelaxed rectangular
silicon nanowire (SiNW) and demonstrate the EHT-approach of surface passivation
using hydrogen. Our EHT-parameters thus provide a quantitative model of
bulk-silicon and silicon-based materials such as contacts and surfaces, which
are essential ingredients towards a quantitative quantum transport simulation

In the Interests of clients or commerce? Legal aid, supply, demand, and 'ethical indeterminacy' in criminal defence work
As a professional, a lawyer's first duty is to serve the client's best interests, before simple monetary gain. In criminal defence work, this duty has been questioned in the debate about the causes of growth in legal aid spending: is it driven by lawyers (suppliers) inducing unnecessary demand for their services or are they merely responding to increased demand? Research reported here found clear evidence of a change in the handling of cases in response to new payment structures, though in ways unexpected by the policy's proponents. The paper develops the concept of 'ethical indeterminacy' as a way of understanding how defence lawyers seek to reconcile the interests of commerce and clients. Ethical indeterminacy suggests that where different courses of action could each be said to benefit the client, the lawyer will tend to advise the client to decide in the lawyer's own interests. Ethical indeterminacy is mediated by a range of competing conceptions of 'quality' and 'need'. The paper goes on to question the very distinction between 'supply' and 'demand' in the provision of legal services
Health Risk Perceptions Are Associated with Domestic Use of Basic Water and Sanitation Services—Evidence from Rural Ethiopia
We examine factors associated with the use of basic water supply and sanitation services as part of an integrated community-based nutrition programme which included a drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) intervention and emphasise findings related to health risk perceptions. Data were collected from 2658 households in four regions in Ethiopia with a cross-sectional survey in WaSH intervention areas, as well as in control areas, where the intervention was not implemented. The data were analysed using bivariate and multivariable regression analysis. Awareness of health risk factors related to inadequate WaSH was high in the programme area. The use of basic water and sanitation services was associated with several health risk perceptions: Perceiving water quality as good increased the odds of using basic water services as opposed to believing the water quality was poor (OR 3.94; CI 3.06–5.08; p ≤ 0.001). Believing that drinking unsafe water was the main cause for diarrhoea increased the odds of using basic water services (OR 1.48; CI 1.20–1.81; p ≤ 0.001). In the WaSH intervention group, the use of basic sanitation was more likely than in the control group. The use of basic sanitation was associated with households who had previously received sanitation training, as opposed to such who had not (OR 1.55; CI 1.22–1.97; p ≤ 0.001). Perceiving dirty space as the main cause of diarrhoea (OR 1.81; CI 1.50–2.19; p ≤ 0.001), and privacy when using a latrine (OR 2.00; CI 1.67–2.40; p ≤ 0.001), were associated with higher odds of using basic sanitation. Households that indicated a disadvantage of owning a latrine was maintenance costs were less likely to use basic sanitation (OR 0.49; CI 0.38–0.63; p ≤ 0.001). Risk perceptions were important determinants of use of basic services. The findings point to risk perceptions motivating the application of positive WaSH-related and health-protective behaviours. This suggests that well-designed health risk communication strategies may be effective for engaging households in healthy WaSH behaviour
