Smooth Random Surfaces from Tight Immersions?
We investigate actions for dynamically triangulated random surfaces that
consist of a gaussian or area term plus the {\it modulus} of the gaussian
curvature and compare their behavior with both gaussian plus extrinsic

An Effective Model for Crumpling in Two Dimensions?
We investigate the crumpling transition for a dynamically triangulated random
surface embedded in two dimensions using an effective model in which the
disordering effect of the variables on the correlations of the normals is
replaced by a long-range ``antiferromagnetic'' term. We compare the results
from a Monte Carlo simulation with those obtained for the standard action which
retains the 's and discuss the nature of the phase transition.Comment: 5 page
Ising Model Coupled to Three-Dimensional Quantum Gravity
We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model coupled to
three-dimensional quantum gravity based on a summation over dynamical
triangulations. These were done both in the microcanonical ensemble, with the
number of points in the triangulation and the number of Ising spins fixed, and
in the grand canoncal ensemble. We have investigated the two possible cases of
the spins living on the vertices of the triangulation (``diect'' case) and the
spins living in the middle of the tetrahedra (``dual'' case). We observed phase
transitions which are probably second order, and found that the dual
implementation more effectively couples the spins to the quantum gravity.Comment: 11 page
Contextual information and assessor characteristics in complex question answering
The ciqa track investigates the role of interaction in answering complex questions: questions that relate two or more entities by some specified relationship. In our submission to the first ciqa track we were interested in the interplay between groups of variables: variables describing the question creators, the questions asked and the presentation of answers to the questions. We used two interaction forms - html questionnaires completed before answer assessment - to gain contextual information from the answer assessors to better understand what factors influence assessors when judging retrieved answers to complex questions. Our results indicate the importance of understanding the assessor's personal relationship to the question - their existing topical knowledge for example - and also the presentation of the answers - contextual information about the answer to aid in the assessment of the answer

Development and implementation of a vehicle-pedestrian conflict analysis method: Adaptation of a vehicle-vehicle technique
This paper examines the development, use, and evaluation of a new traffic conflict analysis technique that specifically addresses pedestrian-vehicle conflicts with the intention of being applicable to shared-space environments. The method is based on an existing, well-established, and widely used vehicle-vehicle conflict analysis technique, but is adapted to consider the movement of pedestrians, which differs significantly from that of vehicles. The new method is then implemented on the Exhibition Road site of West London with the use of video data collected from locations with a potentially high concentration of vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, and the results of the analysis are presented. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained by other conflict analysis techniques and also against accident data to assess not only the accuracy but also the functionality of the new technique

Analysis of pedestrian-vehicle traffic conflicts in street designs with elements of shared space
This paper investigates changes in pedestrian-vehicle traffic conflicts in urban streets redesigned according to the principles of shared space, using a recently developed Pedestrian-Vehicle Conflicts Analysis (PVCA) method. In a first step, the PVCA method is revised to more accurately reflect the features of shared space: this includes the definition of a systematic process for identifying conflict occurrences on one hand, and the full quantification of the conflict severity grading process on the other. Then, the refined PVCA method is applied to a case study in London, using video data from periods before and after the redevelopment of the Exhibition Road site from a conventional dual carriageway to a modern design with some elements of shared space. The results of the comparative analysis carried out indicate a general decrease in traffic conflict rates as a result of the redesign, but also highlight specific issues that may require additional analysis
The East African contribution to the formalisation of the soil catena concept
The concept of the soil catena was first explicitly formalised by Geoffrey Milne and his colleagues in East Africa in the 1930s. It has been widely adopted and applied in soil survey and continues to be of great value in soil and other field sciences The concept characterises widespread patterns in which distinctive associations of soils and vegetation are consistently located in specific slope positions. The formalisation of the concept in an area well outside the mainstream of soil research appears to have been due to the combination of highly visible recurrent patterns of red slope soils overlooking dark valley clays in East Africa’s extensive savannahs, together with a group of receptive and collaborative soil scientists working in a supportive institutional environment. The concept is often attributed to Geoffrey Milne, the group’s coordinator, but we show that several colleagues and friends also contributed. We summarise some of the early soil catenas characterised by Milne and his colleagues in Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika Territory (now Tanzania). Even at the beginning, it was appreciated that the catena was not universally applicable and that heterogeneity of parent materials can override catenary patterns. The catena was quickly and widely adopted in soil science, and this diffusion has led to some broadening of the definition, and several types of soil pattern are now designated as catenas. The concept has also spread beyond soil science and is used by ecologists, geomorphologists and hydrologists amongst others. It continues to be a paradigm of great explicative and educational power in soil science and ecology
Adaptive query-based sampling of distributed collections
As part of a Distributed Information Retrieval system a de-scription of each remote information resource, archive or repository is usually stored centrally in order to facilitate resource selection. The ac-quisition ofprecise resourcedescriptionsistherefore animportantphase in Distributed Information Retrieval, as the quality of such represen-tations will impact on selection accuracy, and ultimately retrieval per-formance. While Query-Based Sampling is currently used for content discovery of uncooperative resources, the application of this technique is dependent upon heuristic guidelines to determine when a sufficiently accurate representation of each remote resource has been obtained. In this paper we address this shortcoming by using the Predictive Likelihood to provide both an indication of thequality of an acquired resource description estimate, and when a sufficiently good representation of a resource hasbeen obtained during Query-Based Sampling
