    The Stillwater Complex chromitites : the response of chromite crystal chemistry to magma injection

    Nineteen chromite crystals from the A, B, E, G, H, J and K chromitite layers of the Peridotite Zone of the Stillwater Complex (Montana, USA) have been studied by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction and microprobe analyses. The results show that samples from the basal A layer are quite different from the others showing very high oxygen positional parameter u (0.2633-0.2635) and Ti- contents (0.059-0.067apfu). Mg# values are within the range 0.21-0.23 while for the other chromites it is in the range 0.45-0.47. Moreover, for the other samples, according to the structural parameters, two groups have been identified. The first one comprises samples of layers B, E and G, the second includes H, J and K layer samples. It is supposed that high Fe2+ and Ti contents of A layer samples are due to the post-crystallization reaction with interstitial liquid. This fact allowed a very slow cooling rate as evidenced by the high u values. The fractionation of evolved magma from within the intrusion and pulse of a new magma bringing more chromium into the chamber lead to Cr- and Fe3+ -rich compositions and consequently to the increase of the cell edges. The decrease of u values seems to be related to the Cr+Fe3+ and/or Al contents

    Chromite and platinum group elements mineralization in the Santa Elena Ultramafic Nappe (Costa Rica): geodynamic implications

    Chromitites associated with strongly altered peridotite from six distinct localities in the Santa Elena ultramafic nappe (Costa Rica) have been investigated for the first time. Santa Elena chromitites commonly display a compositional variation from extremely chromiferous (Cr/(Cr+Al)=0.81) to intermediate and aluminous (Cr/(Cr+Al)=0.54). This composition varies along a continuous trend, corresponding to calculated parental liquids which may have been derived from the differentiation of a single batch of boninitic magma with Cr-rich and (Al, Ti)-poor initial composition. Fractional precipitation of chromite probably occurred during differentiation of the boninitic melt and progressive metasomatic reaction with mantle peridotite. The distribution of platinum group elements (PGE) displays the high (Os+Ir+Ru)/(Rh+Pt+Pd) ratio typical of ophiolitic chromitites and, consistently, the platinum group minerals (PGM) encountered are mainly Ru-Os-Ir sulfides and arsenides. Textural relations of most of the platinum group elements suggest crystallization at magmatic temperatures, possibly under relatively high sulfur fugacity as indicated by the apparent lack of primary Os-Ir-Ru alloys. The chemical and mineralogical characteristics of chromitites from the Santa Elena ultramafic nappe have a strong affinity to podiform chromitites in the mantle section of supra-subduction-zone ophiolites. Calculated parental melts of the chromitites are consistent with the differentiation of arc-related magmas, and do not support the oceanic spreading center geodynamic setting previously proposed by some authors

    Structural and compositional data for childrenite from the Homolka granite, Czech Republic

    Members of the childrenite–eosphorite series, ideally (Fe1−xMnx)AlPO4(OH)2⋅H2O, from the highly evolved Homolka granite, in the southern Czech Republic, were characterized using a multi-analytical approach. They occur as anhedral grains, up to ∼0.2 mm in size, associated with quartz, muscovite, albite, and K-feldspar. Tiny inclusions of probable uraninite have been observed. Backscattered electron images reveal a patchy zoning of these members of the childrenite–eosphorite series, related to an uneven distribution of Fe and Mn. On the basis of electron microprobe analysis, the average composition of the studied material is (Fe0.68Mn0.28Ca0.03)Σ0.99Al0.96(P1.04Si0.01)Σ1.05O4.00(OH)2.09⋅0.91H2O, thus corresponding to childrenite. Unit-cell parameters of this species are a=6.9226(9), b=10.4081(13), c=13.3957(17) Å. Its crystal structure was refined in the space group Cmca down to R1=0.0295 on the basis of 602 unique reflections with Fo&gt;4σ(Fo) and 66 refined parameters. The crystal structure analysis agrees with the results of electron microprobe analysis and suggests that, in the studied material, Fe occurs in the divalent oxidation state only. Crystal structure data are also consistent with the Raman spectrum collected on the same grain that was structurally characterized, confirming the occurrence of PO4 groups only in childrenite.</p

    Osmium isotope systematics of the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic ophiolitic chromitites : in situ ion probe analysis of primary Os-rich PGM

The definitive version was published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters 245 (2006): 777-791, doi:10.1016/j.epsl.2006.03.021.In-situ 187Os/188Os ratios are determined on Os-rich platinum-group minerals in podiform chromitites both in the Proterozoic ophiolite, Eastern Desert, Egypt, and in the Phanerozoic Oman ophiolite. Because they have very low Re/Os, these primary minerals reflect the initial 187Os/188Os ratios of their parental magmas. The platinum-group minerals (PGM) in the central Eastern Desert chromitites exhibit sub-chondritic to chondritic 187Os/188Os ratios, 0.1226 on average, which is lower than the primitive upper mantle evolution trend of a comparable age. Those of the southern Eastern Desert chromitites have more radiogenic Os, with supra-chondritic 187Os/188Os ratio of about 0.1293 on average, which could be due to crustal contamination. The three chromitite types in the northern part of the Oman ophiolite are almost indistinguishable in terms of their 187Os/188Os ratios; they have overlapping values ranging from sub-chondritic to supra-chondritic ratios. The PGE-rich, mantle chromitite samples have a wide range of 187Os/188Os ratio from 0.1230 up to 0.1376, with an average of 0.1299. The values of the PGE-poor mantle chromitites overlap in their 187Os/188Os ratios with PGE-rich chromites, but are less variable and have a significantly higher average ratio. The Moho transition zone (MTZ) chromitites are highly variable in the 187Os/188Os ratio, ranging from 0.1208 up to 0.1459. The wide range of 187Os/188Os ratios, from 0.1192 to 0.1459, in platinum-group minerals in Egyptian and Oman ophiolites can be attributed to the diversity of origin of their podiform chromitites. The Os-isotope data combined with spinel chemistry indicate that the way involved in podiform chromitite formation was not substantially different between the Proterozoic ophiolite of Egypt and the Phanerozoic ophiolite in northern Oman. The Os-isotope compositions of the mantle chromitites in the Proterozoic ophiolite of Egypt clearly suggest crustal contamination. The heterogeneity of 187Os/188Os ratios combined with the spinel chemistry and high PGE contents of the PGE-rich chromitite in the Oman ophiolite may give reliable evidence for high degree partial melting at a supra-subduction zone setting. Crustal contamination from the subducted slab, and assimilation of previously altered, lower crustal gabbro, may have contributed to the high Cr# spinel and radiogenic Os characteristics in chromitite formed in the mantle section and along the Moho transition zone, respectively.Kelemen and Hanghøj were supported in this project by US National Science Foundation grants OCE-9819666 and OCE-0118572

    Identification of Pax6-Dependent Gene Regulatory Networks in the Mouse Lens

    Lineage-specific DNA-binding transcription factors regulate development by activating and repressing particular set of genes required for the acquisition of a specific cell type. Pax6 is a paired domain and homeodomain-containing transcription factor essential for development of central nervous, olfactory and visual systems, as well as endocrine pancreas. Haploinsufficiency of Pax6 results in perturbed lens development and homeostasis. Loss-of-function of Pax6 is incompatible with lens lineage formation and results in abnormal telencephalic development. Using DNA microarrays, we have identified 559 genes expressed differentially between 1-day old mouse Pax6 heterozygous and wild type lenses. Of these, 178 (31.8%) were similarly increased and decreased in Pax6 homozygous embryonic telencephalon [Holm PC, Mader MT, Haubst N, Wizenmann A, Sigvardsson M, Götz M (2007) Loss- and gain-of-function analyses reveals targets of Pax6 in the developing mouse telencephalon. Mol Cell Neurosci 34: 99–119]. In contrast, 381 (68.2%) genes were differently regulated between the lens and embryonic telencephalon. Differential expression of nine genes implicated in lens development and homeostasis: Cspg2, Igfbp5, Mab21l2, Nrf2f, Olfm3, Spag5, Spock1, Spon1 and Tgfb2, was confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR, with five of these genes: Cspg2, Mab21l2, Olfm3, Spag5 and Tgfb2, identified as candidate direct Pax6 target genes by quantitative chromatin immunoprecipitation (qChIP). In Mab21l2 and Tgfb2 promoter regions, twelve putative individual Pax6-binding sites were tested by electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs) with recombinant Pax6 proteins. This led to the identification of two and three sites in the respective Mab21l2 and Tgfb2 promoter regions identified by qChIPs. Collectively, the present studies represent an integrative genome-wide approach to identify downstream networks controlled by Pax6 that control mouse lens and forebrain development

    "Delirium Day": A nationwide point prevalence study of delirium in older hospitalized patients using an easy standardized diagnostic tool

    Background: To date, delirium prevalence in adult acute hospital populations has been estimated generally from pooled findings of single-center studies and/or among specific patient populations. Furthermore, the number of participants in these studies has not exceeded a few hundred. To overcome these limitations, we have determined, in a multicenter study, the prevalence of delirium over a single day among a large population of patients admitted to acute and rehabilitation hospital wards in Italy. Methods: This is a point prevalence study (called "Delirium Day") including 1867 older patients (aged 65 years or more) across 108 acute and 12 rehabilitation wards in Italian hospitals. Delirium was assessed on the same day in all patients using the 4AT, a validated and briefly administered tool which does not require training. We also collected data regarding motoric subtypes of delirium, functional and nutritional status, dementia, comorbidity, medications, feeding tubes, peripheral venous and urinary catheters, and physical restraints. Results: The mean sample age was 82.0 \ub1 7.5 years (58 % female). Overall, 429 patients (22.9 %) had delirium. Hypoactive was the commonest subtype (132/344 patients, 38.5 %), followed by mixed, hyperactive, and nonmotoric delirium. The prevalence was highest in Neurology (28.5 %) and Geriatrics (24.7 %), lowest in Rehabilitation (14.0 %), and intermediate in Orthopedic (20.6 %) and Internal Medicine wards (21.4 %). In a multivariable logistic regression, age (odds ratio [OR] 1.03, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.05), Activities of Daily Living dependence (OR 1.19, 95 % CI 1.12-1.27), dementia (OR 3.25, 95 % CI 2.41-4.38), malnutrition (OR 2.01, 95 % CI 1.29-3.14), and use of antipsychotics (OR 2.03, 95 % CI 1.45-2.82), feeding tubes (OR 2.51, 95 % CI 1.11-5.66), peripheral venous catheters (OR 1.41, 95 % CI 1.06-1.87), urinary catheters (OR 1.73, 95 % CI 1.30-2.29), and physical restraints (OR 1.84, 95 % CI 1.40-2.40) were associated with delirium. Admission to Neurology wards was also associated with delirium (OR 2.00, 95 % CI 1.29-3.14), while admission to other settings was not. Conclusions: Delirium occurred in more than one out of five patients in acute and rehabilitation hospital wards. Prevalence was highest in Neurology and lowest in Rehabilitation divisions. The "Delirium Day" project might become a useful method to assess delirium across hospital settings and a benchmarking platform for future surveys
