    Measurement of Turbulence Power Spectra in Agitated Vessels of Different Size with a Laser-Doppler Velocimeter

    We have used the laser-Doppler velocimeter with a new noise reduction technique for measurements in water-filled, turbine-agitated vessels of several sizes, but of the same geometry. Mean velocities, turbulence intensities and turbulence power spectra were obtained in the impeller stream region. With these results we hope, in the future, to put scaling rules for mixing vessels on a sounder basis

    Spatial Extent of Random Laser Modes

    We have experimentally studied the distribution of the spatial extent of modes and the crossover from essentially single-mode to distinctly multimode behavior inside a porous gallium phosphide random laser. This system serves as a paragon for random lasers due to its exemplary high index contrast. In the multimode regime, we observed mode competition. We have measured the distribution of spectral mode spacings in our emission spectra and found level repulsion that is well described by the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random-matrix theory

    The role of Joule heating in the formation of nanogaps by electromigration

    We investigate the formation of nanogaps in gold wires due to electromigration. We show that the breaking process will not start until a local temperature of typically 400 K is reached by Joule heating. This value is rather independent of the temperature of the sample environment (4.2-295 K). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the breaking dynamics can be controlled by minimizing the total series resistance of the system. In this way, the local temperature rise just before break down is limited and melting effects are prevented. Hence, electrodes with gaps < 2 nm are easily made, without the need of active feedback. For optimized samples, we observe quantized conductance steps prior the gap formation.Comment: including 7 figure

    Changes in wave climate over the northwest European shelf seas during the last 12,000 years

    Because of the depth attenuation of wave orbital velocity, wave-induced bed shear stress is much more sensitive to changes in total water depth than tidal-induced bed shear stress. The ratio between wave- and tidal-induced bed shear stress in many shelf sea regions has varied considerably over the recent geological past because of combined eustatic changes in sea level and isostatic adjustment. In order to capture the high-frequency nature of wind events, a two-dimensional spectral wave model is here applied at high temporal resolution to time slices from 12 ka BP to present using paleobathymetries of the NW European shelf seas. By contrasting paleowave climates and bed shear stress distributions with present-day conditions, the model results demonstrate that, in regions of the shelf seas that remained wet continuously over the last 12,000 years, annual root-mean-square (rms) and peak wave heights increased from 12 ka BP to present. This increase in wave height was accompanied by a large reduction in the annual rms wave- induced bed shear stress, primarily caused by a reduction in the magnitude of wave orbital velocity penetrating to the bed for increasing relative sea level. In regions of the shelf seas which remained wet over the last 12,000 years, the annual mean ratio of wave- to (M-2) tidal-induced bed shear stress decreased from 1 (at 12 ka BP) to its present-day value of 0.5. Therefore compared to present- day conditions, waves had a more important contribution to large-scale sediment transport processes in the Celtic Sea and the northwestern North Sea at 12 ka BP

    The use of humour in diversional therapy

    Humour is a natural phenomenon that every human being possesses. But humour is often not fully utilized and often taken for granted. It is only recently that there has been an upsurge in research in the area of humour that has began to highlight and prove the many benefits that come from its effective utilization. Although humour is a natural phenomenon, there are times in our lives when humour needs to be formally initiated such as in times of illness. Diversional Therapists because of the nature of their work, have ample opportunities to initiate humour. Humour is one of the many tools diversional therapists can use to increase the effectiveness of their activities programmes. This paper examines the definitions of humour and laughter, the beneficial functions of humour, why the use of humour is important in diversional therapy practice and the applications of humour in practice. The paper aims to give diversional therapists background information about humour, highlight the many benefits of humour and give some practical ideas of how humour can be formally incorporated into their diversional therapy programmes. It is envisaged that this paper will increase diversional therapists knowledge of humour, encourage the use of formal humour programmes with clients and encourage diversional therapists to research the various ways of using humour in their practice

    Fracture diagnostics, unnecessary travel and treatment: a comparative study before and after the introduction of teleradiology in a remote general practice

    Background Teleradiology entails attainment of x-rays in one location, transfer over some distance and assessment at another location for diagnosis or consultation. This study documents fracture diagnostics, unnecessary trips to the hospital, treatment and number of x-rays for the years 2006 and 2009, before and after the introduction of teleradiology in a general practice on the island of Ameland in the north of the Netherlands. Methods In a retrospective, descriptive, observational before and after study of the introduction of x-ray facilities in an island-based general practice, we compared the number of accurately diagnosed fractures, unnecessary trips, treatments and number of x-rays taken in 2006 when only a hospital x-ray facility was available 5 hours away with those in 2009 after an x-ray facility became available at a local general practice. All patients visiting a general practice on the island of Ameland in 2006 and 2009 with trauma and clinical suspicion of a fracture, dislocation or sprain were included in the study. The initial clinical diagnoses, including those based on the outcomes of x-rays, were compared for the two years and also whether the patients were treated at home or in hospital. Results A total of 316 and 490 patients with trauma visited a general practice in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Of these patients, 66 and 116 were found to have fractures or dislocations in the two years, respectively. In 2006, 83 x-rays were ordered; in 2009, this was 284. In 2006, 9 fractures were missed; in 2009, this was only 2. In 2006, 15 patients with fractures or dislocations were treated at the general practice; in 2009, this had increased to 77. Conclusion Since the introduction of teleradiology the number of missed fractures in patients visiting the general practice with trauma and the number of the unnecessary trips to a hospital are reduced. In addition more patients with fractures and dislocations can be treated in the general practice as opposed to the hospital

    Attitudes and actions of asthma patients on regular maintenance therapy: the INSPIRE study

    BACKGROUND: This study examined the attitudes and actions of 3415 physician-recruited adults aged ≥ 16 years with asthma in eleven countries who were prescribed regular maintenance therapy with inhaled corticosteroids or inhaled corticosteroids plus long-acting β(2)-agonists. METHODS: Structured interviews were conducted to assess medication use, asthma control, and patients' ability to recognise and self-manage worsening asthma. RESULTS: Despite being prescribed regular maintenance therapy, 74% of patients used short-acting β(2)-agonists daily and 51% were classified by the Asthma Control Questionnaire as having uncontrolled asthma. Even patients with well-controlled asthma reported an average of 6 worsenings/year. The mean period from the onset to the peak symptoms of a worsening was 5.1 days. Although most patients recognised the early signs of worsenings, the most common response was to increase short-acting β(2)-agonist use; inhaled corticosteroids were increased to a lesser extent at the peak of a worsening. CONCLUSION: Previous studies of this nature have also reported considerable patient morbidity, but in those studies approximately three-quarters of patients were not receiving regular maintenance therapy and not all had a physician-confirmed diagnosis of asthma. This study shows that patients with asthma receiving regular maintenance therapy still have high levels of inadequately controlled asthma. The study also shows that patients recognise deteriorating asthma control and adjust their medication during episodes of worsening. However, they often adjust treatment in an inappropriate manner, which represents a window of missed opportunity
