Racetrack inflation with matter fields and cosmic strings

    Get PDF
We consider the coupling of racetrack inflation to matter fields as realized in the D3/D7 brane system. In particular, we investigate the possibility of cosmic string formation in this system. We find that strings can form before or at the onset of racetrack inflation is possible, but they are then inflated away. Furthermore, string formation at the end of inflation is prevented by the presence of the moduli sector. As a consequence, no strings survive racetrack inflation

Resonant tunneling in a Luttinger liquid for arbitrary barrier transmission

A numerically exact dynamical quantum Monte Carlo approach has been developed and applied to transport through a double barrier in a Luttinger liquid with arbitrary transmission. For strong transmission, we find broad Fabry-Perot Coulomb blockade peaks, with a lineshape parametrized by a single parameter, but at sufficiently low temperatures, non-Lorentzian universal lineshapes characteristic of coherent resonant tunneling emerge, even for strong interactions. For weak transmission, our data supports the recently proposed correlated sequential tunneling picture and is consistent with experimental results on intrinsic nanotube dots.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Flexibilisering gebruiksnormen : verkenning perspectieven voor de akkerbouw

    Get PDF

Muon Pair Production by Electron-Photon Scatterings

    Get PDF
The cross section for muon pair productions by electrons scattering over photons, σMPP\sigma_{MPP}, is calculated analytically in the leading order. It is pointed out that for the center-of-mass energy range, s5mμ2s \geq 5 m^{2}_{\mu}, the cross section for σMPP\sigma_{MPP} is less than 1μ1 \mu b. The differential energy spectrum for either of the resulting muons is given for the purpose of high-energy neutrino astronomy. An implication of our result for a recent suggestion concerning the high-energy cosmic neutrino generation through this muon pair is discussed.Comment: a comment added, to appear in Phys. Rev. Intrinsic Coulomb blockade in multi-wall carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes provide a new class of molecular wires that display new and exciting mesoscopic transport properties. We provide a detailed theoretical description for transport in multi-wall nanotubes, where both disorder and strong interactions are important. The interplay of both aspects leads to a particularly effective intrinsic Coulomb blockade for tunneling. The relation to recent experiments is discussed.Comment: 13 pages, incl 2 figs, for: Special issue "Transport in Molecular Wires" in Chemical Physics, ed. by P. Hanggi, M. Ratner, S. Yalirak

Sneutrino condensate as a candidate for the hot big bang cosmology

    Get PDF
If inflationary paradigm is correct, then it must create conditions for the hot big bang model with all observed matter, baryons and the seed perturbations for the structure formation. In this paper we propose a scenario where the inflaton energy density is dumped into the bulk in a brane world setup, and all the required physical conditions are created by the right handed neutrino sector within supersymmetry. The scalar component of the right handed Majorana neutrino is responsible for generating the scale invariant fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation, reheating the Universe at a temperature~Trh109T_{rh}\leq 10^{9} GeV, and finally generating the lepton/baryon asymmetry, nB/s1010n_{B}/s\sim 10^{-10}, with no lepton/baryon isocurvature fluctuations.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures. Effecten van verse organische stof

    Get PDF

    Longevity of supersymmetric flat directions

    Get PDF
We examine the fate of supersymmetric flat directions. We argue that the non-perturbative decay of the flat direction via preheating is an unlikely event. In order to address this issue, first we identify the physical degrees of freedom and their masses in presence of a large flat direction VEV (Vacuum Expectation Value). We explicitly show that the (complex) flat direction and its fermionic partner are the only light {\it physical} fields in the spectrum. If the flat direction VEV is much larger than the weak scale, and it has a rotational motion, there will be no resonant particle production at all. The case of multiple flat directions is more involved. We illustrate that in many cases of physical interest, the situation becomes effectively the same as that of a single flat direction, or collection of independent single directions. In such cases preheating is not relevant. In an absence of a fast non-perturbative decay, the flat direction survives long enough to affect thermalization in supersymmetric models as described in hep-ph/0505050 and hep-ph/0512227. It can also ``terminate'' an early stage of non-perturbative inflaton decay as discussed in hep-ph/0603244.Comment: 9 revtex pages, v3: expanded discussion on two flat directions, minor modifications, conclusions unchange

    Identifying the curvaton within MSSM

We consider inflaton couplings to MSSM flat directions and the thermalization of the inflaton decay products, taking into account gauge symmetry breaking due to flat direction condensates. We then search for a suitable curvaton candidate among the flat directions, requiring an early thermally induced start for the flat direction oscillations to facilitate the necessary curvaton energy density dominance. We demonstrate that the supersymmetry breaking AA-term is crucial for achieving a successful curvaton scenario. Among the many possible candidates, we identify the u1dd{\bf u_1dd} flat direction as a viable MSSM curvaton.Comment: 9 pages.
