Finite element analysis in a minicomputer/mainframe environment
Design considerations were evaluated for general purpose finite element systems to maximize performance when installed on distributed computer hardware/software systems. It is shown how the features of current minicomputers complement those of a modular implementation of the finite element method for increasing the control, speed, and visibility (interactive graphics) in solving structural problems at reduced cost. The approach used is to implement a finite element system in a distributed computer environment to solve structural problems and to explore alternatives in distributing finite element computations
Micro-device for coupling, multiplexing and demultiplexing using elliptical-core two-mode fiber
We propose and demonstrate experimentally a fiber optic micro-device that is capable of tunably splitting, multiplexing, and demultiplexing optical signals using elliptical-core two-mode optical fiber. A crosstalk of 15 dB with an insertion loss of 1.2 dB was obtained
Dynamical trapping and relaxation of scalar gravitational fields
We present a framework for nonlinearly coupled scalar-tensor theory of
gravity to address both inflation and core-collapse supernova problems. The
unified approach is based on a novel dynamical trapping and relaxation of
scalar gravity in highly energetic regimes. The new model provides a viable
alternative mechanism of inflation free from various issues known to affect
previous proposals. Furthermore, it could be related to observable violent
astronomical events, specifically by releasing a significant amount of
additional gravitational energy during core-collapse supernovae. A recent
experiment at CERN relevant for testing this new model is briefly outlined.Comment: 4 pages; version to appear in PL

Spin-orbit coupling and electron spin resonance for interacting electrons in carbon nanotubes
We review the theoretical description of spin-orbit scattering and electron
spin resonance in carbon nanotubes. Particular emphasis is laid on the effects
of electron-electron interactions. The spin-orbit coupling is derived, and the
resulting ESR spectrum is analyzed both using the effective low-energy field
theory and numerical studies of finite-size Hubbard chains and two-leg Hubbard
ladders. For single-wall tubes, the field theoretical description predicts a
double peak spectrum linked to the existence of spin-charge separation. The
numerical analysis basically confirms this picture, but also predicts
additional features in finite-size samples.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, invited review article for special issue in J.

Capabilities of GRO/OSSE for observing solar flares
The launch of the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) near solar maximum makes solar flare studies early in the mission particularly advantageous. The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on GRO, covering the energy range 0.05 to 150 MeV, has some significant advantages over the previous generation of satellite-borne gamma-ray detectors for solar observations. The OSSE detectors will have about 10 times the effective area of the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) on Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) for both photons and high-energy neutrons. The OSSE also has the added capability of distinguishing between high-energy neutrons and photons directly. The OSSE spectral accumulation time (approx. 4s) is four times faster than that of the SMM/GRS; much better time resolution is available in selected energy ranges. These characteristics will allow the investigation of particle acceleration in flares based on the evolution of the continuum and nuclear line components of flare spectra, nuclear emission in small flares, the anisotropy of continuum emission in small flares, and the relative intensities of different nuclear lines. The OSSE observational program will be devoted primarily to non-solar sources. Therefore, solar observations require planning and special configurations. The instrumental and operational characteristics of OSSE are discussed in the context of undertaking solar observations. The opportunities for guest investigators to participate in solar flare studies with OSSE is also presented
Impact of the Wiggler Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Impedance on the Beam Instability
Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) can play an important role by not only
increasing the energy spread and emittance of a beam, but also leading to a
potential instability. Previous studies of the CSR induced longitudinal
instability were carried out for the CSR impedance due to dipole magnets.
However, many storage rings include long wigglers where a large fraction of the
synchrotron radiation is emitted. This includes high-luminosity factories such
as DAPHNE, PEP-II, KEK-B, and CESR-C as well as the damping rings of future
linear colliders. In this paper, the instability due to the CSR impedance from
a wiggler is studied assuming a large wiggler parameter . The primary
consideration is a low frequency microwave-like instability, which arises near
the pipe cut-off frequency. Detailed results are presented on the growth rate
and threshold for the damping rings of several linear collider designs.
Finally, the optimization of the relative fraction of damping due to the
wiggler systems is discussed for the damping rings.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Calculation of the Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Impedance from a Wiggler
Most studies of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) have only considered the
radiation from independent dipole magnets. However, in the damping rings of
future linear colliders, a large fraction of the radiation power will be
emitted in damping wigglers. In this paper, the longitudinal wakefield and
impedance due to CSR in a wiggler are derived in the limit of a large wiggler
parameter . After an appropriate scaling, the results can be expressed in
terms of universal functions, which are independent of . Analytical
asymptotic results are obtained for the wakefield in the limit of large and
small distances, and for the impedance in the limit of small and high
frequencies.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Particle acceleration
Data is compiled from Solar Maximum Mission and Hinothori satellites, particle detectors in several satellites, ground based instruments, and balloon flights in order to answer fundamental questions relating to: (1) the requirements for the coronal magnetic field structure in the vicinity of the energization source; (2) the height (above the photosphere) of the energization source; (3) the time of energization; (4) transistion between coronal heating and flares; (5) evidence for purely thermal, purely nonthermal and hybrid type flares; (6) the time characteristics of the energization source; (7) whether every flare accelerates protons; (8) the location of the interaction site of the ions and relativistic electrons; (9) the energy spectra for ions and relativistic electrons; (10) the relationship between particles at the Sun and interplanetary space; (11) evidence for more than one acceleration mechanism; (12) whether there is single mechanism that will accelerate particles to all energies and also heat the plasma; and (13) how fast the existing mechanisms accelerate electrons up to several MeV and ions to 1 GeV
