Monotone Volume Formulas for Geometric Flows
We consider a closed manifold M with a Riemannian metric g(t) evolving in
direction -2S(t) where S(t) is a symmetric two-tensor on (M,g(t)). We prove
that if S satisfies a certain tensor inequality, then one can construct a
forwards and a backwards reduced volume quantity, the former being
non-increasing, the latter being non-decreasing along the flow. In the case
where S=Ric is the Ricci curvature of M, the result corresponds to Perelman's
well-known reduced volume monotonicity for the Ricci flow. Some other examples
are given in the second section of this article, the main examples and
motivation for this work being List's extended Ricci flow system, the Ricci
flow coupled with harmonic map heat flow and the mean curvature flow in
Lorentzian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvatures. With our approach,

Multiband Mechanism for the Sign Reversal of Coulomb Drag Observed in Double Bilayer Graphene Heterostructures
Coupled 2D sheets of electrons and holes are predicted to support novel
quantum phases. Two experiments of Coulomb drag in electron-hole (e-h) double
bilayer graphene (DBLG) have reported an unexplained and puzzling sign reversal
of the drag signal. However, we show that this effect is due to the multiband
character of DBLG. Our multiband Fermi liquid theory produces excellent
agreement and captures the key features of the experimental drag resistance for
all temperatures. This demonstrates the importance of multiband effects in
DBLG: they have a strong effect not only on superfluidity, but also on the

Place effects on environmental views
How people respond to questions involving the environment depends partly on individual characteristics. Characteristics such as age, gender, education, and ideology constitute the well-studied social bases of environmental concern, which have been explained in terms of cohort effects or of cognitive and cultural factors related to social position. It seems likely that people\u27s environmental views depend not only on personal characteristics but also on their social and physical environments. This hypothesis has been more difficult to test, however. Using data from surveys in 19 rural U.S. counties, we apply mixed-effects modeling to investigate simple place effects with respect to locally focused environmental views. We find evidence for two kinds of place effects. Net of individual characteristics, specific place characteristics have the expected effect on related environmental views. Local changes are related to attitudes about regulation and growth. For example, respondents more often perceive rapid development as a problem, and favor environmental rules that restrict development, in rural counties with growing populations. Moreover, they favor conserving resources for the future rather than using them now to create jobs in counties that have low unemployment. After we controlled for county growth, unemployment and jobs in resource based industries, and individual social-position and ideological factors, there remains significant place-to-place variation in mean levels of environmental concern. Even with both kinds of place effects in the models, the individual level predictors of environmental concern follow patterns expected from previous research. Concern increases with education among Democrats, whereas among Republicans, the relationship is attenuated or reversed. The interaction marks reframing of environmental questions as political wedge issues, through nominally scientific counterarguments aimed at educated, ideologically receptive audiences. © 2010, by the Rural Sociological Society

How Does Wind Project Performance Change with Age in the United States?
Wind-plant performance declines with age, and the rate of decline varies between regions. The rate of performance decline is important when determining wind-plant financial viability and expected lifetime generation. We determine the rate of age-related performance decline in the United States wind fleet by evaluating generation records from 917 plants. We find the rate of performance decline to be 0.53%/year for older vintages of plants and 0.17%/year for newer vintages of plants on an energy basis for the first 10 years of operation, which is on the lower end of prior estimates in Europe. Unique to the United States, we find a significant drop in performance by 3.6% after 10 years, as plants lose eligibility for the production tax credit. Certain plant characteristics, such as the ratio of blade length to nameplate capacity, influence the rate of performance decline. These results indicate that the performance decline rate can be partially managed and influenced by policy

Structural evaluation of candidate designs for the large space telescope primary mirror
Structural performance analyses were conducted on two candidate designs (Itek and Perkin-Elmer designs) for the large space telescope three-meter mirror. The mirror designs and the finite-element models used in the analyses evaluation are described. The results of the structural analyses for several different types of loading are presented in tabular and graphic forms. Several additional analyses are also reported: the evaluation of a mirror design concept proposed by the Boeing Co., a study of the global effects of local cell plate deflections, and an investigation of the fracture mechanics problems likely to occur with Cervit and ULE. Flexibility matrices were obtained for the Itek and Perkin-Elmer mirrors to be used in active figure control studies. Summary, conclusions, and recommendations are included
