    A Model for a Thin Magnetostrictive Actuator

    In this paper, we propose a model for dynamic magnetostrictive hysteresisin a thin rod actuator. We derive two equations that representmagnetic and mechanical dynamic equilibrium. Our model results from an application of the energy balance principle.It is a dynamic model as it accounts for inertial effects and mechanicaldissipation as the actuator deforms, and also eddy current lossesin the ferromagnetic material.     Role of Leukotriene B4 Receptors in the Development of Atherosclerosis: Potential Mechanisms

    Objective-Leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a potent leukocyte chemoattractant, is known to promote several inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis. We sought to determine mechanisms through which LTB 4 modulates atherosclerosis in cell lines expressing LTB4 receptors, BLT-1, and in mice deficient in BLT-1 as well as macrophage cell lines derived from BLT-1+/+ and BLT-/- mice. Methods and Results-Analysis of global changes in gene expression induced by LTB 4 in rat basophilic leukemia cells (RBL-2H3) expressing the human BLT-1 showed highest-fold increase in expression of fatty acid translocase/CD36 and the chemokine MCP1/JE/CCL2, which are critical in atherogenesis. To determine the importance of BLT-1 in atherogenesis, we crossed BLT-1-null mice with apolipoprotein (apo)-E-deficient mice, which develop severe atherosclerosis. Deletion of BLT-1 significantly reduced the lesion formation in apo-E-/- mice only during initiating stages (4 and 8 weeks) but had no effect on the lesion size in mice fed atherogenic diet for 19 weeks. Macrophage cell lines from BLT-1-deficient mice expressed the low-affinity LTB4 receptor, BLT-2, and exhibited chemotaxis to LTB4. Conclusions-The effects of LTB4 in atherosclerosis are likely mediated through the high-affinity BLT-1 and the low-affinity BLT-2 receptors. LTB4 promotes atherosclerosis by chemo-attracting monocytes, by providing an amplification loop of monocyte chemotaxis via CCL2 production, and by converting monocytes to foam cells by enhanced expression of CD36 and fatty acid accumulation

    This report presents the Displacement (Strain)-Current characteristic of an ETREMA MP 50/6 magnetostrictive actuator. This actuator is made of TERFENOL-D and displays giant magnetostriction. The displacement-current characteristic shows significant hysteresis behavior that depends on the rate at which the input is applied. Another important property of ferromagnetic hysteresis - the wiping out property, was also observed in the experiments

The novelty of this motor was the creation of an electrical resonant circuit, whereby reactive power requirement on the power source is reduced. It was envisioned that the motor would be suitable for low output speed, high torque applications because of its design. This report presents the constructional details of this motor and the results of the demonstration

    Nonlinear Model Reduction and Decentralized Control of Tethered Formation Flight by Oscillation Synchronization

    This paper describes a fully decentralized nonlinear control law for spinning tethered formation flight, based on exploiting geometric symmetries to reduce the original nonlinear dynamics into simpler stable dynamics. Motivated by oscillation synchronization in biological systems, we use contraction theory to prove that a control law stabilizing a single-tethered spacecraft can also stabilize arbitrary large circular arrays of spacecraft, as well as the three inline configuration. The convergence result is global and exponential. Numerical simulations and experimental results using the SPHERES testbed validate the exponential stability of the tethered formation arrays by implementing a tracking control law derived from the reduced dynamics

    Greedy Solution of Ill-Posed Problems: Error Bounds and Exact Inversion

    The orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is an algorithm to solve sparse approximation problems. Sufficient conditions for exact recovery are known with and without noise. In this paper we investigate the applicability of the OMP for the solution of ill-posed inverse problems in general and in particular for two deconvolution examples from mass spectrometry and digital holography respectively. In sparse approximation problems one often has to deal with the problem of redundancy of a dictionary, i.e. the atoms are not linearly independent. However, one expects them to be approximatively orthogonal and this is quantified by the so-called incoherence. This idea cannot be transfered to ill-posed inverse problems since here the atoms are typically far from orthogonal: The ill-posedness of the operator causes that the correlation of two distinct atoms probably gets huge, i.e. that two atoms can look much alike. Therefore one needs conditions which take the structure of the problem into account and work without the concept of coherence. In this paper we develop results for exact recovery of the support of noisy signals. In the two examples in mass spectrometry and digital holography we show that our results lead to practically relevant estimates such that one may check a priori if the experimental setup guarantees exact deconvolution with OMP. Especially in the example from digital holography our analysis may be regarded as a first step to calculate the resolution power of droplet holography

    Comparative performances of machine learning methods for classifying Crohn Disease patients using genome-wide genotyping data

    Abstract: Crohn Disease (CD) is a complex genetic disorder for which more than 140 genes have been identified using genome wide association studies (GWAS). However, the genetic architecture of the trait remains largely unknown. The recent development of machine learning (ML) approaches incited us to apply them to classify healthy and diseased people according to their genomic information. The Immunochip dataset containing 18,227 CD patients and 34,050 healthy controls enrolled and genotyped by the international Inflammatory Bowel Disease genetic consortium (IIBDGC) has been re-analyzed using a set of ML methods: penalized logistic regression (LR), gradient boosted trees (GBT) and artificial neural networks (NN). The main score used to compare the methods was the Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) statistics. The impact of quality control (QC), imputing and coding methods on LR results showed that QC methods and imputation of missing genotypes may artificially increase the scores. At the opposite, neither the patient/control ratio nor marker preselection or coding strategies significantly affected the results. LR methods, including Lasso, Ridge and ElasticNet provided similar results with a maximum AUC of 0.80. GBT methods like XGBoost, LightGBM and CatBoost, together with dense NN with one or more hidden layers, provided similar AUC values, suggesting limited epistatic effects in the genetic architecture of the trait. ML methods detected near all the genetic variants previously identified by GWAS among the best predictors plus additional predictors with lower effects. The robustness and complementarity of the different methods are also studied. Compared to LR, non-linear models such as GBT or NN may provide robust complementary approaches to identify and classify genetic markers
