High Pressure Effects on Thermal Properties of MgO
Using the non-empirical Variational Induced Breathing (VIB) model, the
thermal properties of periclase (MgO) under high pressures and temperatures are
investigated using molecular dynamics, which includes all anharmonic effects.
Equations of state for temperatures up to 3000K and pressures up to 310 GPa
were calculated. Bulk modulus, thermal expansivity, Anderson-Gruneisen
parameter, thermal pressure, Gruneisen parameter and their pressure and
temperature dependencies are studied in order to better understand high
pressure effects on thermal properties. The results agree very well with
experiments and show that the thermal expansivity decreases with pressure up to
about 100 GPa (=0.73), and is almost pressure and temperature independent
above this compression. It is also effected by anharmonicity at zero pressure
and temperatures above 2500K. The thermal pressure changes very little with
increasing pressures and temperatures, and the Gruneisen parameter is

Andean Land Use And Biodiversity: Humanized Landscapes In A Time Of Change

Effects of pressure on diffusion and vacancy formation in MgO from non-empirical free-energy integrations
The free energies of vacancy pair formation and migration in MgO were
computed via molecular dynamics using free-energy integrations and a
non-empirical ionic model with no adjustable parameters. The intrinsic
diffusion constant for MgO was obtained at pressures from 0 to 140 GPa and
temperatures from 1000 to 5000 K. Excellent agreement was found with the zero
pressure diffusion data within experimental error. The homologous temperature
model which relates diffusion to the melting curve describes well our high

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks collected from wild animals in Israel
We report molecular evidence for the presence of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) in ticks collected from roe deer, addax, red foxes, and wild boars in Israel. Rickettsia aeschlimannii was detected in Hyalomma marginatum and Hyalomma detritum while Rickettsia massiliae was present in Rhipicephalus turanicus ticks. Furthermore, a novel uncultured SFGR was detected in Haemaphysalis adleri and Haemaphysalis parva ticks from golden jackals. The pathogenicity of the novel SFGR for humans is unknown; however, the presence of multiple SFGR agents should be considered when serological surveillance data from Israel are interpreted because of significant antigenic cross-reactivity among Rickettsia. The epidemiology and ecology of SFGR in Israel appear to be more complicated than was previously believed. Copyright © 2011 by The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

Sustained Immune Tolerance Induction in Enzyme Replacement Therapy-Treated CRIM-Negative Patients with Infantile Pompe Disease
BACKGROUND: Cross-reactive immunological material-negative (CRIM-negative) infantile Pompe disease (IPD) patients develop an immune response against enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with alglucosidase alfa that nullifies ERT efficacy. Prophylactic immune tolerance induction (ITI) with rituximab, methotrexate, and IVIG successfully prevents development of deleterious rhGAA IgG antibodies; however, safety, likelihood of success, and long-term efficacy of ITI in a larger cohort remain unknown. METHODS: Clinical data were analyzed for 19 CRIM-negative IPD patients who received ITI with rituximab, methotrexate, and IVIG in the ERT-naive setting (ERT+ITI) and compared to a historical cohort of 10 CRIM-negative IPD patients on ERT monotherapy. RESULTS: ITI was safely tolerated, although infections were reported in 4 patients. Fourteen (74%) ERT+ITI patients were alive, with a median age of 44.2 months at their final assessment. The eldest survivor was 103.9 months old, with 100.2 months of follow-up after initiation of ERT+ITI. Death (n = 5) occurred at a median age of 29.2 months and was unrelated to the administration of ITI. Fifteen patients either did not seroconvert (n = 8) or maintained low titers (n = 7; defined as titers of /=51,200 at or beyond 6 months on ERT). Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) decreased from a median of 248.5 g/m2 at baseline to 76.8 g/m2 at a median time from ERT+ITI initiation to 59 weeks. Middle pleistocene glaciation in Patagonia dated by cosmogenic-nuclide measurements on outwash gravels
The well-preserved glacial record in Argentine Patagonia offers a ~ 1 Ma archive of terrestrial climate extremes in southern South America. These glacial deposits remain largely undated beyond the range of radiocarbon dating at ca. 40 ka. Dating old glacial deposits (> several 105 a) by cosmogenic surface exposure methods is problematic because of the uncertainty in moraine degradation and boulder erosion rates. Here, we show that cobbles on outwash terraces can reliably date âoldâ glacial deposits in the Lago PueyrredĂłn valley, 47.5° S, Argentina. Favorable environmental conditions (e.g., aridity and strong winds) have enabled continuous surface exposure of cobbles and preservation of outwash terraces. The data demonstrate that nuclide inheritance is negligible and we therefore use the oldest surface cobbles to date the deposit. 10Be concentrations in outwash cobbles reveal a major glacial advance at ca. 260 ka, concurrent with Marine Isotope Stage 8 (MIS 8) and dust peaks in Antarctic ice cores. A 10Be concentration depth-profile in the outwash terrace supports the age and suggests a low terrace erosion rate of ca. 0.5 mm kaâ 1. We compare these data to exposure ages obtained from associated moraines and find that surface boulders underestimate the age of the glaciation by ~ 100 ka; thus the oldest boulders in this area do not date closely moraine deposition. The 10Be concentration in moraine cobbles help to constrain moraine degradation rates. These data together with constraints from measured 26Al/10Be ratios suggest that all moraine boulders were likely exhumed after original deposition. We determine the local Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) occurred at ~ 27â25 ka, consistent with the maximum LGM in other parts of Patagonia
The Energetics of Li Off-Centering in KLiTaO; First Principles Calculations
KLiTaO (KLT) solid solutions exhibit a variety of
interesting physical phenomena related to large displacements of Li-ions from
ideal perovskite A-site positions. First-principles calculations for KLT
supercells were used to investigate these phenomena. Lattice dynamics
calculations for KLT exhibit a Li off-centering instability. The energetics of
Li-displacements for isolated Li-ions and for Li-Li pairs up to 4th neighbors
were calculated. Interactions between nearest neighbor Li-ions, in a Li-Li
pair, strongly favor ferroelectric alignment along the pair axis. Such Li-Li
pairs can be considered "seeds" for polar nanoclusters in KLT.
Electrostriction, local oxygen relaxation, coupling to the KT soft-mode, and
interactions with neighboring Li-ions all enhance the polarization from Li
off-centering. Calculated hopping barriers for isolated Li-ions and for nearest
neighbor Li-Li pairs are in good agreement with Arrhenius fits to experimental
