Quantitaton of rate of gastrointestinal and buccal absorption of acidic and basic drugs based on extraction theory
Equations have been derived which quantitatively describe the rate of gastrointestinal and buccal absorption of acidic and basic drugs as a function of pH of aqueous lumenal contents and time. The equations have been used to fit observed data in the literature, and the estimated parameters are reported. An equation which describes the renal clearance of an acidic or basic drug as a function of urinary pH is also derived. In essence, the equations quantitate the pH-partition hypothesis and explain most, if not all, related observed data in the literature. The results suggest that the aqueous diffusion layer may not rate-limit absorption of monomeric drug molecules but that absorption is rate-limited by transfer of drug out of the membrane in vivo.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45024/1/10928_2005_Article_BF01060026.pd
Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy on Human Blood
Dielectric spectra of human blood reveal a rich variety of dynamic processes.
Achieving a better characterization and understanding of these processes not
only is of academic interest but also of high relevance for medical
applications as, e.g., the determination of absorption rates of electromagnetic
radiation by the human body. The dielectric properties of human blood are
studied using broadband dielectric spectroscopy, systematically investigating
the dependence on temperature and hematocrit value. By covering a frequency
range from 1 Hz to 40 GHz, information on all the typical dispersion regions of
biological matter is obtained. We find no evidence for a low-frequency
relaxation (alpha-relaxation) caused, e.g., by counterion diffusion effects as
reported for some types of biological matter. The analysis of a strong
Maxwell-Wagner relaxation arising from the polarization of the cell membranes
in the 1-100 MHz region (beta-relaxation) allows for the test of model
predictions and the determination of various intrinsic cell properties. In the
microwave region beyond 1 GHz, the reorientational motion of water molecules in
the blood plasma leads to another relaxation feature (gamma-relaxation).
Between beta- and gamma-relaxation, significant dispersion is observed, which,
however, can be explained by a superposition of these relaxation processes and
is not due to an additional delta-relaxation often found in biological matter.
Our measurements provide dielectric data on human blood of so far unsurpassed
precision for a broad parameter range. All data are provided in electronic form
to serve as basis for the calculation of the absorption rate of electromagnetic
radiation and other medical purposes. Moreover, by investigating an
exceptionally broad frequency range, valuable new information on the dynamic

Customer Interaction and Innovation in Hybrid Offerings:Investigating Moderation and Mediation Effects for Goods and Services Innovation
Hybrid offerings are bundles of goods and services offerings provided by the same firm. Bundling value offerings affects how firms innovate, interact with customers, and customize their goods and services. However, it remains unclear how customer interaction might drive the innovation performance of various bundled components. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of customer interactions and service customization on both goods and services innovations in a hybrid offering context, using a unique data set of 146 information technology and manufacturing firms. Customer interaction appears beneficial to both goods and services innovation in a hybrid offerings context, but service customization has different direct effects on goods versus services innovation. As a potential mediator, customer knowledge mobilization resources exert different effects on the goods and services elements of hybrid offerings. Furthermore, for high-interaction customers, medium levels of technical modularity lead to most favorable innovation outcomes for services innovation. The results thus suggest that providers of hybrid offerings should foster customer interactions, to drive the innovation performance of the good and service components, while still making sure to implement service customization strategies.
