Effect of low temperature nitriding of 100Cr6 substrates on TiN coatings deposited by IBAD
CNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOIn this paper we studied the influence of pre-treating the surface of 100Cr6 steel by ion beam nitriding at low temperature (380 degrees C) on the surface topography and wear resistance of thin TiN coatings deposited by reactive ion beam assisted deposition. The specimens were characterized by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The wear resistance of the TiN-coated specimens was evaluated by means of ball on disc tests. The results showed that application of a preliminary ion beam nitriding treatment slightly increased the surface roughness but improved the wear resistance of the 100Cr6 steel due to the formation of a diffusion zone containing the gamma'-Fe4N nitride combined with the TiN coating. In this paper we studied the influence of pre-treating the surface of 100Cr6 steel by ion beam nitriding at low temperature (380 degrees C) on the surface topography and wear resistance of thin TiN coatings deposited by reactive ion beam assisted deposition. The afterglow and kilonova of the short GRB 160821B
GRB 160821B is a short duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected and localized
by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in the outskirts of a spiral galaxy at
z=0.1613, at a projected physical offset of 16 kpc from the galaxy's center. We
present X-ray, optical/nIR and radio observations of its counterpart and model
them with two distinct components of emission: a standard afterglow, arising
from the interaction of the relativistic jet with the surrounding medium, and a
kilonova, powered by the radioactive decay of the sub-relativistic ejecta.
Broadband modeling of the afterglow data reveals a weak reverse shock
propagating backward into the jet, and a likely jet-break at 3.5 d. This is
consistent with a structured jet seen slightly off-axis while expanding into a
low-density medium. Analysis of the kilonova properties suggests a rapid
evolution toward red colors, similar to AT2017gfo, and a low nIR luminosity,
possibly due to the presence of a long-lived neutron star. The global
properties of the environment, the inferred low mass (M_ej < 0.006 Msun) and
velocities (v > 0.05 c) of lanthanide-rich ejecta are consistent with a binary
neutron star merger progenitor.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, MNRAS, in press. Moderate revision, added Figure

Understanding the Nature of the Optical Emission in Gamma-Ray Bursts: Analysis from TAROT, COATLI, and RATIR Observations
We collected the optical light curve data of 227 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)
observed with the TAROT, COATLI, and RATIR telescopes. These consist of 133
detections and 94 upper limits. We constructed average light curves in the
observer and rest frames in both X-rays (from {\itshape Swift}/XRT) and in the
optical. Our analysis focused on investigating the observational and intrinsic
properties of GRBs. Specifically, we examined observational properties, such as
the optical brightness function of the GRBs at seconds after the
trigger, as well as the temporal slope of the afterglow. We also estimated the
redshift distribution for the GRBs within our sample. Of the 227 GRBs analysed,
we found that 116 had a measured redshift. Based on these data, we calculated a
local rate of Gpc yr for these events with . To
explore the intrinsic properties of GRBs, we examined the average X-ray and
optical light curves in the rest frame. We use the {\scshape afterglowpy}
library to generate synthetic curves to constrain the parameters typical of the
bright GRB jet, such as energy (~erg), opening angle (~rad), and density (
cm). Furthermore, we analyse microphysical parameters, including the
fraction of thermal energy in accelerated electrons
() and in the magnetic field
(), and the power-law index of the
population of non-thermal electrons ().Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after minor revision, 13 pages and 9 figure
May Measurement Month 2019: An analysis of blood pressure screening results from Argentina
The Argentinean Society of Hypertension, in agreement with the May Measurement Month (MMM) initiative of the International Society of Hypertension, implemented for the third consecutive year a hypertension screening campaign. A volunteer cross-sectional survey was carried out in public spaces and health centres during the month of May 2019 across 33 cities in Argentina. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (BP) ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg based on the mean of the second and third BP measurements, or in those on treatment for high BP. A total of 94 523 individuals (53.9 ± 17.8 years old, 55 231women and 39 292 men), were evaluated. The age and sex standardized mean BP was 124.7/77.2 mmHg. Among participants, 34.7% were overweight (25-29.9 m/kg2) and 28.7% had obesity (≥30 m/kg2). Individuals identified as being overweight had BP 3/2 mmHg higher and individuals with obesity 6/4 mmHg higher than those with normal weight. The prevalence of hypertension was 52.5%. Although 81.1% were aware and 77.7% were on antihypertensive treatment, only 46.0% of all individuals with hypertension had their BP controlled. Moreover, 19.8% of those not on any antihypertensive medication were found with raised BP. The low level of control of hypertension generates the critical need for the development of community-based prevention strategies reinforcing strategies to increase the awareness and control of hypertension.Fil: Salazar, Martin Rogelio Enrique. The Sensitivity of HAWC to High-Mass Dark Matter Annihilations
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a wide field-of-view
detector sensitive to gamma rays of 100 GeV to a few hundred TeV. Located in
central Mexico at 19 degrees North latitude and 4100 m above sea level, HAWC
will observe gamma rays and cosmic rays with an array of water Cherenkov
detectors. The full HAWC array is scheduled to be operational in Spring 2015.
In this paper, we study the HAWC sensitivity to the gamma-ray signatures of
high-mass (multi- TeV) dark matter annihilation. The HAWC observatory will be
sensitive to diverse searches for dark matter annihilation, including
annihilation from extended dark matter sources, the diffuse gamma-ray emission
from dark matter annihilation, and gamma-ray emission from non-luminous dark
matter subhalos. Here we consider the HAWC sensitivity to a subset of these
sources, including dwarf galaxies, the M31 galaxy, the Virgo cluster, and the
Galactic center. We simulate the HAWC response to gamma rays from these sources
in several well-motivated dark matter annihilation channels. If no gamma-ray
excess is observed, we show the limits HAWC can place on the dark matter
cross-section from these sources. In particular, in the case of dark matter
annihilation into gauge bosons, HAWC will be able to detect a narrow range of
dark matter masses to cross-sections below thermal. HAWC should also be
sensitive to non-thermal cross-sections for masses up to nearly 1000 TeV. The
constraints placed by HAWC on the dark matter cross-section from known sources
should be competitive with current limits in the mass range where HAWC has
similar sensitivity. HAWC can additionally explore higher dark matter masses
than are currently constrained.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, version to be published in PR
VAMOS: a Pathfinder for the HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory
VAMOS was a prototype detector built in 2011 at an altitude of 4100m a.s.l.
in the state of Puebla, Mexico. The aim of VAMOS was to finalize the design,
construction techniques and data acquisition system of the HAWC observatory.
HAWC is an air-shower array currently under construction at the same site of
VAMOS with the purpose to study the TeV sky. The VAMOS setup included six water
Cherenkov detectors and two different data acquisition systems. It was in
operation between October 2011 and May 2012 with an average live time of 30%.
Besides the scientific verification purposes, the eight months of data were
used to obtain the results presented in this paper: the detector response to
the Forbush decrease of March 2012, and the analysis of possible emission, at
energies above 30 GeV, for long gamma-ray bursts GRB111016B and GRB120328B.Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astroparticle Physics Journal (20 pages,

Control of magnetic anisotropy by orbital hybridization in (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n superlattice
The asymmetry of chemical nature at the hetero-structural interface offers an
unique opportunity to design desirable electronic structure by controlling
charge transfer and orbital hybridization across the interface. However, the
control of hetero-interface remains a daunting task. Here, we report the
modulation of interfacial coupling of (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n
superlattices by manipulating the periodic thickness with n unit cells of
SrTiO3 and n unit cells La0.67Sr0.33MnO3. The easy axis of magnetic anisotropy
rotates from in-plane (n = 10) to out-of-plane (n = 2) orientation at 150 K.
Transmission electron microscopy reveals enlarged tetragonal ratio > 1 with
breaking of volume conservation around the (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n
interface, and electronic charge transfer from Mn to Ti 3d orbitals across the
interface. Orbital hybridization accompanying the charge transfer results in
preferred occupancy of 3d3z2-r2 orbital at the interface, which induces a
stronger electronic hopping integral along the out-of-plane direction and
corresponding out-of-plane magnetic easy axis for n = 2. We demonstrate that
interfacial orbital hybridization in superlattices of strongly correlated
oxides may be a promising approach to tailor electronic and magnetic properties
in device applications
The major upgrade of the MAGIC telescopes, Part II: A performance study using observations of the Crab Nebula
MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes located in
the Canary island of La Palma, Spain. During summer 2011 and 2012 it underwent
a series of upgrades, involving the exchange of the MAGIC-I camera and its
trigger system, as well as the upgrade of the readout system of both
telescopes. We use observations of the Crab Nebula taken at low and medium
zenith angles to assess the key performance parameters of the MAGIC stereo
system. For low zenith angle observations, the standard trigger threshold of
the MAGIC telescopes is ~50GeV. The integral sensitivity for point-like sources
with Crab Nebula-like spectrum above 220GeV is (0.66+/-0.03)% of Crab Nebula
flux in 50 h of observations. The angular resolution, defined as the sigma of a
2-dimensional Gaussian distribution, at those energies is < 0.07 degree, while
the energy resolution is 16%. We also re-evaluate the effect of the systematic
uncertainty on the data taken with the MAGIC telescopes after the upgrade. We
estimate that the systematic uncertainties can be divided in the following
components: < 15% in energy scale, 11-18% in flux normalization and +/-0.15 for
the energy spectrum power-law slope.Comment: 21 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle
