s-wave pairing in the optimally-doped LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor
We report on the magnetic and superconducting properties of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 by
means of zero- (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin spectroscopy
measurements (uSR). Contrary to previous results on iron-based superconductors,
measurements in zero field demonstrate the absence of magnetically ordered
phases. TF-uSR data give access to the superfluid density, which shows a marked
2D character with a dominant s-wave temperature behavior. The field dependence
of the magnetic penetration depth confirms this finding and further suggests
the presence of an anisotropic superconducting gap
Risk factors for wound infection in surgery for spinal metastasis
Wound infection rates are generally higher in patients undergoing surgery for spinal metastasis. Risk factors of wound infection in these patients are poorly understood.
Purpose
To identify demographic and clinical variables that may be associated with patients experiencing a higher wound infection rate.
Study design
Retrospective study with prospectively collected data of spinal metastasis patients operated consecutively at a University Teaching Hospital, adult spine division which is a tertiary referral centre for complex spinal surgery.
Patient sample
Ninety-eight patients were all surgically treated, consecutively from January 2009 to September 2011. Three patients had to be excluded due to inadequate data.
Outcome measures
Physiological measures, with presence or absence of microbiologically proven infection.
Methods
Various demographic and clinical data were recorded, including age, serum albumin level, blood total lymphocyte count, corticosteroid intake, Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) score, neurological disability, skin closure material used, levels of surgery and administration of peri-operative corticosteroids. No funding was received from any sources for this study and as far as we are aware, there are no potential conflict of interest-associated biases in this study.
Results
Higher probabilities of infection were associated with low albumin level, seven or more levels of surgery, use of delayed/non-absorbable skin closure material and presence of neurological disability. Of these factors, levels of surgery were found to be statistically significant at the 5 % significance level.
Conclusion
Risk of infection is high (17.9 %) in patients undergoing surgery for spinal metastasis. Seven or more vertebral levels of surgery increase the risk of infection significantly (p < 0.05). Low albumin level and presence of neurological disability appear to show a trend towards increased risk of infection. Use of absorbable skin closure material, age, low lymphocyte count, peri-operative administration of corticosteroids and MUST score do not appear to influence the risk of infection
A possible new syndrome with double endocrine tumors in association with an unprecedented type of familial heart-hand syndrome: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The combination of a pituitary prolactinoma and an aldosterone-producing adrenal adenoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, double endocrine tumors in association with heart-hand syndrome have not previously been reported.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 21-year-old Japanese woman presented with galactorrhea and decreased visual acuity. A large pituitary adenoma with an increased level of serum prolactin was apparent by computed tomography. She additionally showed mild hypertension (136/90 mmHg) accompanied by hypokalemia. The plasma aldosterone concentration was increased. Computed tomography showed a mass in the right adrenal gland. No other tumors were found despite extensive imaging studies. Physical and radiographic examinations showed skeletal malformations of the hands and feet, including hypoplasia of the first digit in all four limbs. An atrial septal defect was demonstrated by echocardiography. Similar digital and cardiac abnormalities were detected in our patient's father, and a clinical diagnosis of hereditary heart-hand syndrome was made.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>No established heart-hand syndrome was wholly compatible with the family's phenotype. Her father had no obvious endocrine tumors, implying that the parent of transmission determined variable phenotypic expression of the disease: heart-hand syndrome with multiple endocrine tumors from the paternal transmission or no endocrine tumor from the maternal transmission. This suggests that the gene or genes responsible for the disease may be under tissue-specific imprinting control.</p
Evolution of superconductivity in isovalent Te-substituted KxFe2-ySe2 crystals
We report the evolution of superconductivity and the phase diagram of the
KxFe2-ySe2-zTez (z=0-0.6) crystals grown by a simple one-step synthesis. No
structural transition is observed in any crystals, while lattice parameters
exhibit a systematic expansion with Te content. The Tc exhibits a gradual
decrease with increasing Te content from Tconset = 32.9 K at z = 0 to Tconset =
27.9 K at z = 0.5, followed by a sudden suppression of superconductivity at z =
0.6. Upon approaching a Te concentration of 0.6, the shielding volume fraction
decreases and eventually drops to zero. Simultaneously, hump positions in r-T
curve shift to lower temperatures. These results suggest that isovalent
substitution of Te for Se in KxFe2-ySe2 crystals suppresses the
superconductivity in this system.Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, 8 figure

The control group consisted of 15 women ranging in age from 35 to 52 years with no signs of GHGs, which have had a hysterectomy abdominal access for uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometrial pathology. Immunohistochemical Analysis of Epigenetic Markers in Cervical Pathologies Associated with Human Papillomavirus Infection

The clinicopathologic characteristics and immunohistochemical features of 185 patients with cervical pathologies associated with human papillomavirus infection were examined. Immunohistochemical features analyzed included histone deacetylases (HDAC1, HDAC2) and DNA methyltransferases (DNMT1, DNMT2). Strong correlations of these factors with cervical pathologies including malignancies were identified
Genome-Wide Survey and Expression Analysis of the Plant-Specific NAC Transcription Factor Family in Soybean During Development and Dehydration Stress
Plant-specific NAC transcription factors (TFs) play important roles in regulating diverse biological processes, including development, senescence, growth, cell division and responses to environmental stress stimuli. Within the soybean genome, we identified 152 full-length GmNAC TFs, including 11 membrane-bound members. In silico analysis of the GmNACs, together with their Arabidopsis and rice counterparts, revealed similar NAC architecture. Next, we explored the soybean Affymetrix array and Illumina transcriptome sequence data to analyse tissue-specific expression profiles of GmNAC genes. Phylogenetic analysis using stress-related NAC TFs from Arabidopsis and rice as seeding sequences identified 58 of the 152 GmNACs as putative stress-responsive genes, including eight previously reported dehydration-responsive GmNACs. We could design gene-specific primers for quantitative real-time PCR verification of 38 out of 50 newly predicted stress-related genes. Twenty-five and six GmNACs were found to be induced and repressed 2-fold or more, respectively, in soybean roots and/or shoots in response to dehydration. GmNAC085, whose amino acid sequence was 39%; identical to that of well-known SNAC1/ONAC2, was the most induced gene upon dehydration, showing 390-fold and 20-fold induction in shoots and roots, respectively. Our systematic analysis has identified excellent tissue-specific and/or dehydration-responsive candidate GmNAC genes for in-depth characterization and future development of improved drought-tolerant transgenic soybeans
