    How to Teach English to Immigrant Children: Canadian Pedagogical Theory and Practice, 1910-1960

    Abstract The idea of Anglo-conformity and the attack on immigrant cultures in the early twentieth century is a well-documented theme in Canadian social history. It involved both language-learning and acculturation.  But there has been a curious lack of attention to just how children were to be taught the language and implicitly the culture of the dominant society. This article addresses both the pedagogical theories that were developed to ensure that immigrant children learned English, and the implications for the implementation of language-learning programs. Résumé Dans l’histoire sociale canadienne, l’anglo-conformisme et les offensives lancées contre la culture des immigrés au début du vingtième siècle est un thème bien documenté qui implique à la fois l’apprentissage de la langue et l’acculturation. Curieusement, peu d’études se sont intéressées à la manière dont les enfants s’initiaient à l’anglais et par voie de conséquence assimilaient la culture de la société d’accueil. Cet article s’intéresse à la fois aux théories pédagogiques développées pour s’assurer que les enfants d’immigrants apprenaient l’anglais ainsi qu’aux conséquence de la mise en place des programmes de langue.

    The Salaries of Teachers in English Canada, 1900-1940: A Reappraisal

    Any student of Canadian education during the first half of the twentieth century has encountered the belief, common among those engaged in the educational enterprise and sometimes shared by others, that teachers were badly paid for their work. Though not a universal assessment, a similar view has also dominated the historiography. This interpretation, we think, is overdue for revision. In this article we address two central questions. One focuses more narrowly on teachers' salaries per se: how much, on average, did teachers earn, and how did this change over time? The other asks, just how good or bad were their salaries compared to those of other people in the Canadian workforce? We tackle these questions on a Canada-wide basis, excluding only the province of Quebec, and over an extended period, covering the first four decades of the century. -- Parmi les chercheurs et les étudiants intéressés par l’histoire de l’éducation canadienne pour la première moitié du vingtième siècle, un lieu commun persiste, à savoir, que les enseignants étaient très mal payés pour leur travail. Bien que cette assertion ne soit pas partagée par tous, ce point de vue domine dans l’historiographie de cette période. Nous croyons qu’il est temps de repenser cette interprétation. Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons à deux questions fondamentales. La première porte spécifiquement sur la rémunération des enseignants: combien gagnaient-ils en moyenne et comment leurs salaires ont-ils évolué dans le temps? La deuxième compare les salaires des enseignants à ceux versés aux autres travailleurs canadiens: étaient-ils pires ou meilleurs?     Healthcare Utilization and Quality of Life Improvement after Ablation for Paroxysmal AF in Younger and Older Patients

    Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) prevalence increases significantly with age. Little is known about the effect of AF ablation on quality of life and healthcare utilization in the elderly. The objective of this study was to quantify the healthcare utilization and quality of life benefits of catheter ablation for AF, for patients ≥65 years compared to patients <65 years. Methods Two multicenter U.S. registry studies enrolled patients with paroxysmal AF. Baseline characteristics and acute outcomes were collected for 736 patients receiving catheter ablation with the Navistar® ThermoCool® SF Catheter (Biosense Webster, Inc., Diamond Bar, CA, USA). Healthcare utilization and quality of life outcomes were collected through 1 year postablation for 508 patients. Results The rates of acute pulmonary vein isolation were high and similar between patients ≥65 years and <65 years (97.5% vs 95.8%, P = 0.2130). Length of stay for the index procedure was similar between age groups with 82.2% of the older group and 83.2% of the younger group having one-day hospitalization. Disease-specific quality of life instrument scores improved significantly and similarly for older and younger patients at 1 year postablation, compared to baseline. AF-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits were similar or lower in older patients compared to younger patients, as reported at 1 year postablation. Conclusion For older patients undergoing catheter ablation for paroxysmal AF, healthcare utilization parameters were lower or not significantly different than for younger patients, and quality of life outcomes were similarly improved. These findings support the use of catheter ablation as a treatment option in older patients with paroxysmal AF

    OpenFermion: The Electronic Structure Package for Quantum Computers

    Quantum simulation of chemistry and materials is predicted to be an important application for both near-term and fault-tolerant quantum devices. However, at present, developing and studying algorithms for these problems can be difficult due to the prohibitive amount of domain knowledge required in both the area of chemistry and quantum algorithms. To help bridge this gap and open the field to more researchers, we have developed the OpenFermion software package (www.openfermion.org). OpenFermion is an open-source software library written largely in Python under an Apache 2.0 license, aimed at enabling the simulation of fermionic models and quantum chemistry problems on quantum hardware. Beginning with an interface to common electronic structure packages, it simplifies the translation between a molecular specification and a quantum circuit for solving or studying the electronic structure problem on a quantum computer, minimizing the amount of domain expertise required to enter the field. The package is designed to be extensible and robust, maintaining high software standards in documentation and testing. This release paper outlines the key motivations behind design choices in OpenFermion and discusses some basic OpenFermion functionality which we believe will aid the community in the development of better quantum algorithms and tools for this exciting area of research.Comment: 22 page

    Removing leakage-induced correlated errors in superconducting quantum error correction

    Quantum computing can become scalable through error correction, but logical error rates only decrease with system size when physical errors are sufficiently uncorrelated. During computation, unused high energy levels of the qubits can become excited, creating leakage states that are long-lived and mobile. Particularly for superconducting transmon qubits, this leakage opens a path to errors that are correlated in space and time. Here, we report a reset protocol that returns a qubit to the ground state from all relevant higher level states. We test its performance with the bit-flip stabilizer code, a simplified version of the surface code for quantum error correction. We investigate the accumulation and dynamics of leakage during error correction. Using this protocol, we find lower rates of logical errors and an improved scaling and stability of error suppression with increasing qubit number. This demonstration provides a key step on the path towards scalable quantum computing

    Phase transition in Random Circuit Sampling

    Quantum computers hold the promise of executing tasks beyond the capability of classical computers. Noise competes with coherent evolution and destroys long-range correlations, making it an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. We report Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) experiments where we identify distinct phases driven by the interplay between quantum dynamics and noise. Using cross-entropy benchmarking, we observe phase boundaries which can define the computational complexity of noisy quantum evolution. We conclude by presenting an RCS experiment with 70 qubits at 24 cycles. We estimate the computational cost against improved classical methods and demonstrate that our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers

    Palaeogenomic analysis of black rat (Rattus rattus) reveals multiple European introductions associated with human economic history

    The distribution of the black rat (Rattus rattus) has been heavily influenced by its association with humans. The dispersal history of this non-native commensal rodent across Europe, however, remains poorly understood, and different introductions may have occurred during the Roman and medieval periods. Here, in order to reconstruct the population history of European black rats, we generated a de novo genome assembly of the black rat, 67 ancient black rat mitogenomes and 36 ancient nuclear genomes from sites spanning the 1st-17th centuries CE in Europe and North Africa. Analyses of mitochondrial DNA confirm that black rats were introduced into the Mediterranean and Europe from Southwest Asia. Genomic analyses of the ancient rats reveal a population turnover in temperate Europe between the 6th and 10th centuries CE, coincident with an archaeologically attested decline in the black rat population.
