A quasi-experimental pilot study of fourteen heterosexual couples, twenty-eight participants, was conducted to assess whether Attachment Injury Resolution Protocol (AIRP) was effective in reducing marital distress and improving marital satisfaction in the areas of communication, commitment, and trust post infidelity for high-conflict couples. This study was important due to the fact that roughly thirty percent of couples engaged in marital infidelity (Norona et al., 2018). Fourteen heterosexual couples volunteered and were chosen from the clinician’s private mental-health practice to participate in a quasi-experimental pilot study. Four self-report assessments were implemented, including the Kansas Marital Conflict Scale (KMCS), Interpersonal Communication Skills Inventory, Commitment-Investment Model Scale, and Trust in Close Relationship Scale. All assessments were administered pre- and post-intervention; four dependent variables included marital distress, marital communication, marital commitment, and trust. An independent t-test was conducted for each variable. Results for this pilot study concluded that Attachment Injury Resolution Protocol (AIRP) is an effective form of treatment, but further research is needed. Also, Attachment Injury Resolution Protocol (AIRP) does not effectively improve marital communication for high-conflict couples than Phase II of EFT without AIRP. Recommendations for future research would include a study on a larger population, more diverse ethnicities, and additional domains for testing, including sexual satisfaction and forgiveness

Impaired Translesion Synthesis in Xeroderma Pigmentosum Variant Extracts

Xeroderma pigmentosum variant (XPV) cells are characterized by a cellular defect in the ability to synthesize intact daughter DNA strands on damaged templates. Molecular mechanisms that facilitate replication fork progression on damaged DNA in normal cells are not well defined. In this study, we used single-stranded plasmid molecules containing a single N-2-acetylaminofluorene (AAF) adduct to analyze translesion synthesis (TLS) catalyzed by extracts of either normal or XPV primary skin fibroblasts. In one of the substrates, the single AAF adduct was located at the 3' end of a run of three guanines that was previously shown to induce deletion of one G by a slippage mechanism. Primer extension reactions performed by normal cellular extracts from four different individuals produced the same distinct pattern of TLS, with over 80% of the products resulting from the elongation of a slipped intermediate and the remaining 20% resulting from a nonslipped intermediate. In contrast, with cellular extracts from five different XPV patients, the TLS reaction was strongly reduced, yielding only low amounts of TLS via the nonslipped intermediate. With our second substrate, in which the AAF adduct was located at the first G in the run, thus preventing slippage from occurring, we confirmed that normal extracts were able to perform TLS 10-fold more efficiently than XPV extracts. These data demonstrate unequivocally that the defect in XPV cells resides in translesion synthesis independently of the slippage proces

Lipid composition of grapevine berries, Vitis vinifera L.:Changes during maturation and localization in the berryQuantitative determinations in four grapevine varieties, Vitis vinifera L., gave evidence that the level of fatty acids in mature be rries was around 0.045 %, for t he main part unsaturated acids. Linoleic, pa lmit ic, linolenic and oleic acids were the most abundant, followed by stearic and behenic acids . No free fatty acids were found. Phospholipids formed the largest fraction prior to neutral and glycolipids. Glycolipids showed a high level of linolenic acid, while in phospho- and neutral lipids linoleic acid was highest. In the three fractions, polyunsaturated acids made up more th an half of total fatty acids. No differences were found between grape varieties. During grape maturation, changes in fatty acid levels were low, except for linolenic acid, which decreased consistently, this decline was concerned with neutral and glycolipids. Consequently, the potential of herbaceous flavour decreased progressively during berry maturation. Fatty acids were 1.5-3 times lower in pulp than in skin; thus, the skin can contribute to a large enrichment of fatty acids in juice, polyunsaturated derivatives, especially linolenic acid, being highest. In consequence, the presence of a !a rge part of grape herbaceous flavour potential in the skin was confirmed. Fatty acid patterns were s imilar in pulp and in skin, with more than half consisting of polyunsaturated compounds. There were a lso identical patterns for other lipids such as phospholipids, which were t he most abundant, followed by neutral and glycolipids

Further insights into the floral character of Touriga Nacional Wines

Higher-quality Touriga Nacional (TN) wines are characterized by a fruity-citric aroma described as sweet and fresh citrus evoking the bergamot fruit (Citrus bergamia). In fact, “bergamot-like” descriptor is currently employed to rate higher quality TN wines. The aim of thiswork was to identify among volatile compounds present in bergamot fruit extracts (mainly terpenes) which of them contributes the most to the bergamot overall perception, and relate these data with the volatile composition of TN wines. The identification of the most important descriptors was done by sensory analysis. Among 18 descriptors 3were selected: bergamot-like aroma, orange like, and violet. A GCO of a typical TN wine extract allows the identification of 3 related odorant zones ZO1, ZO2, and ZO3 related with bergamot-like aroma. Using AEDA, ZO2 was confirmed to be one of the most important odorant zones. Using AEDA the presence of linalool and linalyl acetate was confirmed. A similarity test was performedwith a non-TN wine added with linalool and linalyl acetate alone or in combinations. The highest similarity value was observed when linalool (SV = 5.9) was added. In fact, results obtained from the analysis of several red wines from different varieties show that terpenols are present in higher amounts in wines coming from TN variety, which proves that these compounds can be the clue to the varietal aroma of TN wines

Detection of Adsorbed Chlordecone on Microplastics in Marine Sediments in Guadeloupe: A Preliminary Study

Plastic pollution in the oceans is recognized as a worldwide problem. Since the 1950s, the production of plastics has been increasing and the first reports of microplastics (particles \u3c 500 μm) in the marine environment began to appear in the 1970s. These particles represent a growing environmental problem due to their dispersion in seawater and marine organisms. Additionally, microparticles in general can adsorb pollutants that will then become bioavailable to organisms by being desorbed during digestion, which could be an important pathway for the contamination of organisms. In Guadeloupe and Martinique, an organochlorine pesticide called “chlordecone” was used from 1972 to 1993 in banana plantations and this very persistent pollutant contaminates soils, rivers, and coastal marine areas and accumulates in marine foodwebs. To examine these issues, we had two goals: 1) to assess the contamination of marine sediments by microplastics surrounding Guadeloupe; and 2) to determine the ability of microplastics to adsorb chlordecone, as has been demonstrated for other organochlorine pollutants. To do so, marine sediments were collected in triplicate from 12 sites in coral reef environments around the island. Microplastics from each sample were then enumerated by size, color and shape under a binocular microscope. The results indicate that microplastics are found in all the studied sites and that their distribution could be linked to marine currents or proximity to areas of significant human activities (port activities, agglomeration, etc.). Finally, our preliminary results indicated that chlordecone could be adsorbed onto microplastics, with a concentration ranging from 0.00036—0.00173 µg/µg of microfilter

Skin contact in white wine processing- Effects on the volatile constituents of winesWines were made from three different white vine cultivars, Chenin, Chardonnay, Bourboulenc by standard white wine processing, with and without skin contact, and their volatile constituents were analysed using gas chromatography standard procedures. 61 substances were identified and quantified in quadruplicate. One-way analyses of variance for each component were performed in which skin contact wine was compared to the control wine for each vine cultivar. Skin contact was shown to increase significantly most volatile components except volatile acids. In attempt to classify the wines investigated, principal component analysis was conducted using the amounts of compounds differing significantly in variance analysis

Mechanisms of Cognitive Impairment in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: Multimodal MRI Results from the St George's Cognition and Neuroimaging in Stroke (SCANS) Study.

Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is a common cause of vascular cognitive impairment. A number of disease features can be assessed on MRI including lacunar infarcts, T2 lesion volume, brain atrophy, and cerebral microbleeds. In addition, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is sensitive to disruption of white matter ultrastructure, and recently it has been suggested that additional information on the pattern of damage may be obtained from axial diffusivity, a proposed marker of axonal damage, and radial diffusivity, an indicator of demyelination. We determined the contribution of these whole brain MRI markers to cognitive impairment in SVD. Consecutive patients with lacunar stroke and confluent leukoaraiosis were recruited into the ongoing SCANS study of cognitive impairment in SVD (n = 115), and underwent neuropsychological assessment and multimodal MRI. SVD subjects displayed poor performance on tests of executive function and processing speed. In the SVD group brain volume was lower, white matter hyperintensity volume higher and all diffusion characteristics differed significantly from control subjects (n = 50). On multi-predictor analysis independent predictors of executive function in SVD were lacunar infarct count and diffusivity of normal appearing white matter on DTI. Independent predictors of processing speed were lacunar infarct count and brain atrophy. Radial diffusivity was a stronger DTI predictor than axial diffusivity, suggesting ischaemic demyelination, seen neuropathologically in SVD, may be an important predictor of cognitive impairment in SVD. Our study provides information on the mechanism of cognitive impairment in SVD
