A Study of a Method to Predict Printing Quality of Paper by Means of Smoothness and Elongation Test Results
The object of this thesis is to investigate the use of smoothness and elongation test results as criterion for evaluating the printing quality of paper. The relationship of smoothness and printing quality has been known for many years and in all previous work it has been shown to be influential to printing quality. The relationship of elongation and printing quality has never been investigated. The experimental procedure consisted of testing the paper samples for smoothness and elongation, and determining the printing quality of the different papers with the I. G. T. Printability Tester. The results of the analysis of the experimental data can be used to indicate good or poor printing quality of paper

In-flight absolute radiometric calibration of the thematic mapper
In order to determine temporal changes of the absolute radiometric calibration of the entire TM system in flight spectroradiometric measurements of the ground and the atmosphere were made simultaneously with TM image collections over the White Sands, New Mexico area. By entering the measured values in an atmospheric radiative transfer program, the radiance levels in four of the spectral bands of the TM were determined, band 1:0.45 to 0.52 micrometers, band 2:0.53 to 0.61 micrometers band 3:0.62 to 0.70 micrometers and 4:0.78 to 0.91 micrometers. These levels were compared to the output digital counts from the detectors that sampled the radiometrically measured ground area, thus providing an absolute radiometric calibration of the entire TM system utilizing those detectors

The TM multispectral scanner system was calibrated in an absolute manner before launch. To determine the temporal changes of the absolute radiometric calibration of the entire system, spectroradiometric measurements of the ground and the atmosphere were made simultaneously with TM collections over White Sands, New Mexico. By entering the measured values in an atmospheric radiative transfer program, the radiance levels of the in four of the spectral bands of the TM were determined. Tables show values for the reflectance of snow at White Sands measured by a modular 8 channel radiometer, and values for exoatmospheric irradiance within the TM passbands, calculated for the Earth-Sun distance using a solar radiometer
Post-polymerisation modification of bio-derived unsaturated polyester resins via Michael additions of 1,3-dicarbonyls
Post-polymerisation modification of α,β-unsaturated polyesters (UPEs) is useful to deliver polymers with tuneable properties and applications different from their parent backbone. Bio-derivable itaconate unsaturated polyesters, with a range of co-monomers, were modified via a heterogeneously catalysed microwave-assisted Michael addition of pendants, acetylacetone (Hacac) and dimethyl malonate (DMM), to the polymer backbones with very short reaction times. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed an increase in the glass-transition temperatures of most of the saturated polyesters considered. Solubility and complexation studies demonstrated metal chelating abilities of the acetylacetone pendant can be retained, even following tethering to a polyester backbone. Additionally, it is demonstrated for the first time that Michael addition with Hacac and DMM can be used to reverse Ordelt saturation, an unwanted side-reaction in the synthesis of UPEs
Post-Partum Pituitary Insufficiency and Livedo Reticularis Presenting a Diagnostic Challenge in a Resource Limited Setting in Tanzania: A Case Report, Clinical Discussion and Brief Review of Existing Literature.
Pituitary disorders following pregnancy are an important yet under reported clinical entity in the developing world. Conversely, post partum panhypopituitarism has a more devastating impact on women in such settings due to high fertility rates, poor obstetric care and scarcity of diagnostic and therapeutic resources available. A 37 year old African female presented ten years post partum with features of multiple endocrine deficiencies including hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism, lactation failure and secondary amenorrhea. In addition she had clinical features of an underlying autoimmune condition. These included a history of post-partum thyroiditis, alopecia areata, livedo reticularis and deranged coagulation indices. A remarkable clinical response followed appropriate hormone replacement therapy including steroids. This constellation has never been reported before; we therefore present an interesting clinical discussion including a brief review of existing literature. Post partum pituitary insufficiency is an under-reported condition of immense clinical importance especially in the developing world. A high clinical index of suspicion is vital to ensure an early and correct diagnosis which will have a direct bearing on management and patient outcome
In vitro fusion of single synaptic and dense core vesicles reproduces key physiological properties.
Regulated exocytosis of synaptic vesicles is substantially faster than of endocrine dense core vesicles despite similar molecular machineries. The reasons for this difference are unknown and could be due to different regulatory proteins, different spatial arrangements, different vesicle sizes, or other factors. To address these questions, we take a reconstitution approach and compare regulated SNARE-mediated fusion of purified synaptic and dense core chromaffin and insulin vesicles using a single vesicle-supported membrane fusion assay. In all cases, Munc18 and complexin are required to restrict fusion in the absence of calcium. Calcium triggers fusion of all docked vesicles. Munc13 (C1C2MUN domain) is required for synaptic and enhanced insulin vesicle fusion, but not for chromaffin vesicles, correlating inversely with the presence of CAPS protein on purified vesicles. Striking disparities in calcium-triggered fusion rates are observed, increasing with curvature with time constants 0.23 s (synaptic vesicles), 3.3 s (chromaffin vesicles), and 9.1 s (insulin vesicles) and correlating with rate differences in cells
