Formation of Topological Black holes from Gravitational Collapse
We consider the gravitational collapse of a dust cloud in an asymptotically
anti de Sitter spacetime in which points connected by a discrete subgroup of an
isometry subgroup of anti de Sitter spacetime are identified. We find that
black holes with event horizons of any topology can form from the collapse of
such a cloud. The quasilocal mass parameter of such black holes is proportional
to the initial density, which can be arbitrarily small.Comment: latex, 16 pages, four postscript figure

OSO-8 X-ray spectra of clusters of galaxies. 2: Discussion
X-ray spectral parameters obtained from 2 to 20 keV OSO-8 data on X-ray clusters and optical cluster properties were examined to obtain information for restricting models for hot intracluster gas structures. Topics discussed include the radius of the X-ray core in relation to the galaxy core radius, the viral mass of hotter clusters, and galaxy density and optical central cluster properties. A population of cool, dim X-ray clusters which have not been observed is predicted. The iron abundance determinations recently quoted for intracluster gas are uncertain by 50 to greater than 100 percent from this nonstatistical cause alone
Generic task problem solvers in Soar
Two trends can be discerned in research in problem solving architectures in the last few years. On one hand, interest in task-specific architectures has grown, wherein types of problems of general utility are identified, and special architectures that support the development of problem solving systems for those types of problems are proposed. These architectures help in the acquisition and specification of knowledge by providing inference methods that are appropriate for the type of problem. However, knowledge based systems which use only one type of problem solving method are very brittle, and adding more types of methods requires a principled approach to integrating them in a flexible way. Contrasting with this trend is the proposal for a flexible, general architecture contained in the work on Soar. Soar has features which make it attractive for flexible use of all potentially relevant knowledge or methods. But as the theory Soar does not make commitments to specific types of problem solvers or provide guidance for their construction. It was investigated how task-specific architectures can be constructed in Soar to retain as many of the advantages as possible of both approaches. Examples were used from the Generic Task approach for building knowledge based systems. Though this approach was developed and applied for a number of problems, the ideas are applicable to other task-specific approaches as well
Failure properties of loaded fiber bundles having a lower cutoff in fiber threshold distribution
Presence of lower cutoff in fiber threshold distribution may affect the
failure properties of a bundle of fibers subjected to external load. We
investigate this possibility both in a equal load sharing (ELS) fiber bundle
model and in local load sharing (LLS) one. We show analytically that in ELS
model, the critical strength gets modified due to the presence of lower cutoff
and it becomes bounded by an upper limit. Although the dynamic exponents for
the susceptibility and relaxation time remain unchanged, the avalanche size
distribution shows a permanent deviation from the mean-fiels power law. In the
LLS model, we analytically estimate the upper limit of the lower cutoff above
which the bundle fails at one instant. Also the system size variation of
bundle's strength and the avalanche statistics show strong dependence on the
lower cutoff level.Comment: 7 pages and 7 figure
Behavior of nozzles and acoustic liners in three dimensional acoustic fields
Theoretical values of the admittances of various nozzles were computed and compared with the corresponding experimental values. The existing data reduction scheme was corrected and all available experimental data has been rechecked and corrected whenever necessary; the updated experimental admittance values are presented. An analysis associated with the frequency sensitivity of experimental admittance values was initiated and the analog-to-digital Data Reduction Program which has become operational is discussed.
