What’s Love Got to Do with It? A Content Analysis of English and Spanish Idiomatic Expressions

    Get PDF
Idiomatic expressions are figurative in nature and vary from language to language, offering valuable insight toward understanding cultural connotations concerning the topics expressed. This study focused on idiomatic expressions that contain the word “love” or its grammatical variants found in the English and Spanish languages. The aim of this study was to conduct a qualitative analysis of these idiomatic expressions in order to identify cultural connotations, insight, and patterns regarding the communication of love within these expressions. A sample population of these expressions was obtained from a collection of available idiom and phrasal dictionaries and books written in English and Spanish. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively according to the meaning, the type of love, and semantic fields represented within the sources examined. As a result, this study contributes to the field of cross-linguistic idiom analysis by revealing how love is communicated in these colloquial expressions among English and Spanish speakers. Further, it attempted to provide insight toward cultural similarities and differences in how love is expressed within these language-bound constructs

This paper examines how the recent wave of COVID-19-related xenophobia towards East Asian Americans has affected participants\u27 perceptions of their identities as Asian Americans, as well as how race-related experiences prior to COVID have influenced the way that people are able to cope with explicit anti-Asian sentiment

Paz y Amor: The Making of Mexican Hippie Culture

    Get PDF
Following the violent government massacre of students in October of 1968, Mexican youth turned away from organized protest and turned on to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Timothy Leary to challenge established society. This project focuses on Mexican hippie culture and Mexican hippie identity. It argues that hippie culture flourished in Mexico because of the development of consumer society and offered a way for Mexican youth to rebel against traditional authority while feeling a part of an international youth culture and at the same time reshaping what nationalism meant to them. In other words, hippie culture offered youth a dual identity: one that allowed them to be a part of the international community of hippies, as well as a national community they believed was uniquely Mexican

Structural comparison of TonB-dependent receptors in bradyrhizobium japonicum

Soybean is one of the leading crops grown in the United States. Nitrogen fertilizers are widely used in soybean production to increase crop yields. An alternative to nitrogen fertilizers is the symbiotic relationship between soybean and a species of nitrogen-fixing Gram-negative soil bacteria, Bradyrhizobium japonicum. The bacterium infects the roots of the soybean, forming nodules that perform nitrogen fixation. This study involves analysis of TonB-dependent receptors, intermembrane proteins responsible for iron uptake and, in some cases, symbiosis in B. japonicum. A comparison of sequence alignments and 3D structure predictions was used to identify potential symbiosis-specific structural domains within TonB-dependent receptors as targets for site-directed mutagenesis

How Generational Preferences, Cultural Trends, Workplace Expectations, and Other Factors Have Changed the Definition of Professionalism in Terms of Attire and How Employers and Managers Can Respond

    Get PDF
Business attire is an essential part of personal branding as well as corporate branding activities. Fashion, cultural trends, workplace expectations play a role, among others form and change what an acceptable work attire is. Corporations even use their definitions of work attire in their advertising activities as a part of identity development. Such recent examples are State Farm Insurance, Progressive, and Enterprise Rent a Car. Observations during career development activities at multiple universities also revealed that Millennials might have different professional attire interpretations. The literature review indicated a gap regarding how perceptions change from generation to generation in this topic. In the paper, factors that may influence the definition of professional attire have been investigated for three groups of respondents, including early career, mid-career, and retired professionals. Grounded Theory methodology has been used. Multiple themes have been identified for the three generational groups. Further research implications have been discussed

Classification, Molecular Characterization, and the Significance of Pten Alteration in Leiomyosarcoma

    Get PDF
Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant smooth muscle neoplasm with a complicated histopathologic classification scheme and marked differences in clinical behavior depending on the anatomic site of origin. Overlapping morphologic features of benign and borderline malignant smooth muscle neoplasms further complicate the diagnostic process. Likewise, deciphering the complex and heterogeneous patterns of genetic changes which occur in this cancer has been challenging. Preliminary studies suggest that reproducible molecular classification may be possible in the near future and new prognostic markers are emerging. Robust recapitulation of leiomyosarcoma in mice with conditional deletion of Pten in smooth muscle and the simultaneous discovery of a novel role for Pten in genomic stability provide a fresh perspective on the mechanism of leiomyosarcomagenesis and promise for therapeutic intervention

Molecular dissection of the mechanism by which EWS/FLI expression compromises actin cytoskeletal integrity and cell adhesion in Ewing sarcoma.

Ewing sarcoma is the second-most-common bone cancer in children. Driven by an oncogenic chromosomal translocation that results in the expression of an aberrant transcription factor, EWS/FLI, the disease is typically aggressive and micrometastatic upon presentation. Silencing of EWS/FLI in patient-derived tumor cells results in the altered expression of hundreds to thousands of genes and is accompanied by dramatic morphological changes in cytoarchitecture and adhesion. Genes encoding focal adhesion, extracellular matrix, and actin regulatory proteins are dominant targets of EWS/FLI-mediated transcriptional repression. Reexpression of genes encoding just two of these proteins, zyxin and α5 integrin, is sufficient to restore cell adhesion and actin cytoskeletal integrity comparable to what is observed when the EWS/FLI oncogene expression is compromised. Using an orthotopic xenograft model, we show that EWS/FLI-induced repression of α5 integrin and zyxin expression promotes tumor progression by supporting anchorage-independent cell growth. This selective advantage is paired with a tradeoff in which metastatic lung colonization is compromised

Evaluating Preference and Rate of Gambling on Vedio Slot Machines

Casinos increasingly are providing access to five-reel video slot machines and as a result are decreasing the use of traditional three-reel slot machines. Limited research has been conducted on the characteristics of play associated with video slot machines. The present study examined participant’s play on a five-reel video slot machine, comparing the number of trials played while wagering one credit on five lines versus five credits on one line. After participants were exposed to both conditions they were asked to choose their preferred condition. The results found that participants played significantly more trials while playing during the five credits on one line setting. The results also found that 12 out of 16 participants selected to play on the five lines on one credit setting when given the option to choose the settings of the slot machine
