Trade intensity and output synchronisation: On the endogeneity properties of the EMU
Using annual bilateral data over the period 1988-2011 for a panel of 24 industrialised and emerging economies, we analyse in a time-varying framework the determinants of output synchronisation in EMU (European Monetary Union) distinguishing between core and peripheral member states. The results support the specialisation paradigm rather than the endogeneity hypothesis. Evidence is found in the euro period of diverging patterns between the core and the peripheral EMU countries raising questions about the future stability of EMU
Detecting geomagnetic field nonlinearities by bispectral analysis and a phase coupling nonlinear technique
The Earth's magnetic field varies over a wide range of characteristic times, say, from years to centuries, and more. In order to detect some nonlinear features of the geomagnetic field evolution we first apply a nonlinear spectral technique, i.e. bispectral analysis, to the secular variation of Hartland Geomagnetic Observatory (U.K.). Then, due to difficulties of bispectral analysis inherent in the shortness of data, we introduce a simpler, but more efficient, technique called Spectral Phase Analysis for Quadratic Coupling Estimation (SPAQCE). Both nonlinear spectral methods here applied are based on the presence of a phase (sum and difference) coupling in case of quadratic interactions between two constituent components of the physical system underlying the generation of the geomagnetic field. The application of SPAQCE to annual means of a UK combined geomagnetic time series allows us to discriminate nonlinear interactions between couples of characteristic times (specifically 5-6, 5-8 and 2-26 years) of the field generated in the outer core
Procrustes-based distances for exploring between-matrices similarity
The statistical shape analysis called Procrustes analysis minimizes the Frobenius distance between matrices by similarity transformations. The method returns a set of optimal orthogonal matrices, which project each matrix into a common space. This manuscript presents two types of distances derived from Procrustes analysis for exploring between-matrices similarity. The first one focuses on the residuals from the Procrustes analysis, i.e., the residual-based distance metric. In contrast, the second one exploits the fitted orthogonal matrices, i.e., the rotational-based distance metric. Thanks to these distances, similarity-based techniques such as the multidimensional scaling method can be applied to visualize and explore patterns and similarities among observations. The proposed distances result in being helpful in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data analysis. The brain activation measured over space and time can be represented by a matrix. The proposed distances applied to a sample of subjects-i.e., matrices-revealed groups of individuals sharing patterns of neural brain activation. Finally, the proposed method is useful in several contexts when the aim is to analyze the similarity between high-dimensional matrices affected by functional misalignment
Evaluating the expression of urokinase and tissue leukocyte being in benign and malignant breast disease
Introduction: Our objectives is to show that the expression of uPA leukocyte could be considered, in the future, as a marker of
the expression of uPA in the malignant tissue and therefore a potential indicator of prognosis.
Methods: We examined the expression of uPa in leukocytes and tissues of three groups of women: with breast cancer; with
benign breast lesion and healthy women (control group). We used RT Real Time PCR assay. The expression of urokinase is
significantly higher in malignant breast lumps compared to benign lesions. However, in women with carcinoma of the breast,
malignant tissue expresses higher amounts of uPA than the healthy counterpart. There are no statistically significant differences in
the expression of uPA, between tissues taken from women with benign lesions. The lymphocytes taken from healthy volunteers
show a level of expression of uPA significantly lower than the other tested samples Lymphocytes extracted from cancer patients
express higher amounts of uPA compared to lymphocytes belonging to women with benign breast lesions. The expression of uPA
was compared with the clinical and biological parameters commonly used in clinical practice for the definition of the prognosis.
The only exception found, concerns those tumors characterized by the simultaneous negativity for estrogen receptors,
progesterone and HER2 (state of triple negative), in which the expression of uPA is very high.
Results and conclusions: Our data show that uPA expressed by leukocytes of each individual patient is the mirror image of the
one expressed by malignant nodular uPA.Introduction: Our objectives is to show that the expression of uPA leukocyte could be considered, in the future, as a marker of

Trans-esophageal endobronchial ultrasound-guided needle aspiration (EUS-B-NA) : a road map for the chest physician
The endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) scope has been increasingly used in the gastrointestinal tract (EUS-B). Scientific data proves its efficacy and safety to provide a complete lung cancer staging, when combined with EBUS-TBNA, and in the diagnosis of para-esophageal lesions. There are multiple barriers to start performing EUS-B but probably the most important ones are related to knowledge and training, so new operators should follow a structured training curriculum. This review aims to reflect the best current knowledge regarding EUS-B and provide a road map to assist those who are incorporating the technique into their clinical practice
Synthesis of glass nanocomposite powders
The aim of the present study was to synthesize CaO·GeO2 nanocomposite poweders glasses. The sample were prepared to 1450°C°. To investigate the structure of the samples, Differential Thermal Analysis (DSC), X-ray diffraction and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used. The main crystallising phase was found to be CaGe205 crystals. The molar ratio of Ge06/Ge04 groups increases with the CaO·GeO2 molar ratio. Furthermore, in order to study the potential antibacterial properties of the materials the Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria was used and the diameter of zone of inhibition was observed
One-step replica symmetry breaking solution of the quadrupolar glass model
We consider the quadrupolar glass model with infinite-range random
interaction. Introducing a simple one-step replica symmetry breaking ansatz we
investigate the para-glass continuous (discontinuous) transition which occurs
below (above) a critical value of the quadrupole dimension m*. By using a
mean-field approximation we study the stability of the one-step replica
symmetry breaking solution and show that for m>m* there are two transitions.
The thermodynamic transition is discontinuous but there is no latent heat. At a
higher temperature we find the dynamical or glass transition temperature and
the corresponding discontinuous jump of the order parameter.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Equivalence of switching linear systems by bisimulation
A general notion of hybrid bisimulation is proposed for the class of switching linear systems. Connections between the notions of bisimulation-based equivalence, state-space equivalence, algebraic and inputâoutput equivalence are investigated. An algebraic characterization of hybrid bisimulation and an algorithmic procedure converging in a finite number of steps to the maximal hybrid bisimulation are derived. Hybrid state space reduction is performed by hybrid bisimulation between the hybrid system and itself. By specializing the results obtained on bisimulation, also characterizations of simulation and abstraction are derived. Connections between observability, bisimulation-based reduction and simulation-based abstraction are studied.\ud

Preliminary realization of an electric-powered hydraulic pump system for a waste compactor truck and a techno-economic analysis
Most industrial trucks are equipped with hydraulic systems designed for specic operations, for which the required power is supplied by the internal combustion engine (ICE). The largest share of the power consumption is required by the hydraulic system during idling operations, and, consequently, the current literature focuses on energy saving strategies for the hydraulic system rather than making the vehicle traction more efficient. This study presents the preliminary realization of an electric-powered hydraulic pump system (e-HPS) that drives the lifting of the dumpster and the garbage compaction in a waste compactor truck, rather than traditional ICE-driven hydraulic pump systems (ICE-HPSs). The different components of the e-HPS are described and the battery pack was modelled using the kinetic battery model. The end-of-life of the battery pack was determined to assess the economic feasibility of the proposed e-HPS for the truck lifespan, using numerical simulations. The aim was twofold: To provide an implementation method to retrofit the e-HPS to a conventional waste compactor truck and to assess its economic feasibility, investigating fuel savings during the use phase and the consequent reduction of CO2 emissions. Results show that the total lifespan cost saving achieved a value of 65,000. Furthermore, total CO2 emissions for the e-HPS were about 80% lower than those of the ICE-HPS, highlighting that the e-HPS can provide significant environmental benefits in an urban context
Photo-Curing 3D Printing and Innovative Design of Porous Composite Structures for Biomedical Applications
Light-activated resins and composites are used in conjunction with a light curing unit and allow an on-demand process of polymerization. These kinds of materials usually represent the most popular choice in the restorative dental practice. Some works have already highlighted contemporary tendencies in the use of nondegradable scaffolds and mesenchymal stem cells in regenerative medicine. Accordingly, the aim of the current research is to develop 3D porous and light-activated composite structures with optimized functional properties. Preliminary mechanical and biological tests are carried out
