In-medium broadening of nucleon resonances
We analyze the effects of an in-medium broadening of nucleon resonances on
the exclusive photoproduction of mesons on nuclei as well as on the total
photoabsorption cross sections in a transport calculation. We show that the
resonance widths observed in semi-inclusive photoproduction on nuclei are
insensitive to an in-medium broadening of nucleon resonances. This is due to a
simple effect: the sizeable width of the nuclear surface and Fermi motion.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor changes in the tex
Laser pulse analysis
Methods are presented for locating threshold points by using laser pulse analysis. It was found that there are errors involved in the determination of each of these quantities, and an attempt was made to separate their effects on the overall range correction. Several series of corrected range measurements for fixed reflectors and satellites were obtained. Residuals were computed by fitting the range measurements to either fixed-reflector distances or short arcs of satellite orbits. Root mean square values of these residuals are presented
Photoproduction of pi0-mesons from nuclei
Photoproduction of neutral pions from nuclei (carbon, calcium, niobium, lead)
has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 800 MeV with the
TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI
accelerator. Data were obtained for the inclusive photoproduction of neutral
pions and the partial channels of quasifree single pi0, double pi0, and
pi0pi+/- photoproduction. They have been analyzed in terms of the in-medium
behavior of nucleon resonances and the pion - nucleus interaction. They are
compared to earlier measurements from the deuteron and to the predictions of a
Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model for photon induced pion

Spectral Function of Quarks in Quark Matter
We investigate the spectral function of light quarks in infinite quark matter
using a simple, albeit self-consistent model. The interactions between the
quarks are described by the SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Currently mean
field effects are neglected and all calculations are performed in the chirally
restored phase at zero temperature. Relations between correlation functions and
collision rates are used to calculate the spectral function in an iterative

A sequence of advances in the determination of geodetic parameters presented by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory are described. The Warwick Hip Trauma Evaluation One - an abridged protocol for the WHiTE One Study AN EMBEDDED RANDOMISED TRIAL COMPARING THE X-BOLT WITH SLIDING HIP SCREW FIXATION IN EXTRACAPSULAR HIP FRACTURES
Fractures of the proximal femur are one of the greatest challenges facing the medical community, constituting a heavy socioeconomic burden worldwide. Controversy exists regarding the optimal treatment for patients with unstable trochanteric proximal femoral fractures. The recognised treatment alternatives are extramedullary fixation usually with a sliding hip screw and intramedullary fixation with a cephalomedullary nail. Current evidence suggests that best results and lowest complication rates occur using a sliding hip screw. Complications in these difficult fractures are relatively common regardless of type of treatment. We believe that a novel device, the X-Bolt dynamic plating system, may offer superior fixation over a sliding hip screw with lower reoperation risk and better function. We therefore propose to investigate the clinical effectiveness of the X-bolt dynamic plating system compared with standard sliding hip screw fixation within the framework of a the larger WHiTE (Warwick Hip Trauma Evaluation) Comprehensive Cohort Study. Hadron formation in high energy photonuclear reactions
We present a new method to account for coherence length effects in a
semi-classical transport model. This allows us to describe photo- and
electroproduction at large nuclei (A>12) and high energies using a realistic
coupled channel description of the final state interactions that goes beyond
simple Glauber theory. We show that the purely absorptive treatment of the
final state interactions can lead to wrong estimates of color transparency and
formation time effects in particle production. As an example, we discuss
exclusive rho^0 photoproduction on Pb at a photon energy of 7 GeV as well as
K^+ production in the photon energy range 1-7 GeV.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, version published in Phys. Rev.
