    Face recognition system using fringe projection and moiré: characterization with fractal parameters

    We show a new method for face recognition which combines the projection of structures with different characteristics (fringes, bars or grids, dots or speckle) over the face. These projections will then allow the creation of a computer-generated moiré pattern over which different kinds of fractal and complex geometry parameters are then measured. Such parameters will then be used as inputs for a neuro-symbolic hybrid system. Here, we analyze the incidence of some parameters on the efficience for the face recognition method

    Background: Primary healthcare (PHC) is the cornerstone of health systems for the rightful access and cost-effective. It is a key factor in the global strategy for universal health coverage (UHC). Implementing PHC requires an understanding of health system under prevailing circumstances essential to implement PHC, but data are unavailable. Objectives: This paper describes and analyses the health systems of Algeria, Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq and PHC status. Methods: Data were collected during a Workshop at 2018 WONCA East Mediterranean Regional Conference in Kuwait. Academic family physicians (FP) and general practitioners (GP) presented their country reports using the WONCA framework of 11 PowerPoint slides. WHO EMRO reflected on how countries’ experiences can contribute to their Frameworks on Integrated People-Centered Health Services and UHC.. Results: The six countries had achieved a great improvement in populations’ health, but currently face challenges of health financing, small number of certified family physicians, difficulties to access service and bureaucratic process. Main concerns were the absence of a family practice model, brain drain and immigration of FPs. Countries differed in building a coherent policy. Conclusion: Priorities should be focused on: developing PHC model in Eastern Mediterranean Region with advocacy for community-based PHC to policymakers: capacity building for strengthening PHC-oriented health systems with FP specialty training and restrict practicing to fully trained FPs; engage communities to improve understanding of PHC; adopt quality and accreditation policies for better services; validation of the referral and follow-up process; and, develop public-private partnership mechanisms to enhance PHC for UHC

    [EN] The tree tomato (Solanum betaceum Cav.) is a small tree native to the Andean region cultivated for its juicy fruits, which are having an increasing demand. Tree tomato is morphologically and phenologically different from other Solanum crops and tools for the phenological description of the developmental stages are needed for the enhancement of this emerging crop. We developed a basic and an extended numerical BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamnt, Chemische Industrie) scales which allow the precise identification of the phenological stages of tree tomato. Eight principal stages are described for germination, leaf development, formation of side shoots, stem elongation, inflorescence emergence, flowering, development of fruit, and ripening of fruit and seed. The basic (two-digit) scale is sufficiently precise for germination, stem elongation, and ripening of fruit and seed. However, for leaf development, formation of side shoots, inflorescence emergence, flowering, and development of fruit the extended (three-digit) scale is considered necessary for an adequate description. The description of the phenological stages is combined with illustrations for clarification. The tree tomato BBCH scale has been validated by characterizing 24 accessions of different varietal groups for traits of agronomic interest and evaluating the differences observed among accessions at specific BBCH developmental stages. The basic and extended BBCH scales represent a useful tool for the description and identification of phenological scales of tree tomato.     Electrochemical oxidation of tamoxifen revisited

    Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that is used as an adjuvant and/or chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of all stages of hormone-dependent breast cancer. Currently there is a deep interest in the study of tamoxifen biotransformation and identification of metabolites since they can significantly contribute to the overall pharmacological or adverse effects of the drug. Accordingly, the study of the electrochemical behavior of tamoxifen in aqueous solution is reported. To clarify the occurring oxidative process and to assess the influence of the functional groups on the oxidation mechanism, the voltammetric assessment was extended to the study of tamoxifen’s analogues (E)-tamoxifen and dihydrotamoxifen, and to its main phase I oxidative metabolite, N-desmethyl tamoxifen. The data found shows that the oxidative processes occurring in tamoxifen are essentially related with the two chemical moieties present in the molecule: the substituted aromatic nucleus and the tertiary amine group. Moreover, the results obtained suggest that the ethylenic linkage is not critical for tamoxifen’s oxidation although it could play an important role in the course of the oxidation process. These results could contribute to highlight some remaining questions regarding tamoxifen’s metabolic behavior and to the development of new analytical strategies, based on electrochemical approaches

    Paramagnetic GaN:Fe and ferromagnetic (Ga,Fe)N - relation between structural, electronic, and magnetic properties

    We report on the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of GaN:Fe and (Ga,Fe)N layers on c-sapphire substrates and their thorough characterization via high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), spatially-resolved energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), photoluminescence (PL), Hall-effect, electron-paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetometry employing a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). A combination of TEM and EDS reveals the presence of coherent nanocrystals presumably FexN with the composition and lattice parameter imposed by the host. From both TEM and SIMS studies, it is stated that the density of nanocrystals and, thus the Fe concentration increases towards the surface. In layers with iron content x<0.4% the presence of ferromagnetic signatures, such as magnetization hysteresis and spontaneous magnetization, have been detected. We link the presence of ferromagnetic signatures to the formation of Fe-rich nanocrystals, as evidenced by TEM and EDS studies. This interpretation is supported by magnetization measurements after cooling in- and without an external magnetic field, pointing to superparamagnetic properties of the system. It is argued that the high temperature ferromagnetic response due to spinodal decomposition into regions with small and large concentration of the magnetic component is a generic property of diluted magnetic semiconductors and diluted magnetic oxides showing high apparent Curie temperature.Comment: 21 pages, 30 figures, submitted to Phys.
