    IFMIF suitability for evaluation of fusion functional materials

    The International FusionMaterials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) is a future neutron source based on the D-Li stripping reaction, planned to test candidate fusionmaterials at relevant fusion irradiation conditions. During the design of IFMIF special attention was paid to the structural materials for the blanket and first wall, because they will be exposed to the most severe irradiation conditions in a fusion reactor. Also the irradiation of candidate materials for solid breeder blankets is planned in the IFMIF reference design. This paper focuses on the assessment of the suitability of IFMIF irradiation conditions for testing functionalmaterials to be used in liquid blankets and diagnostics systems, since they are been also considered within IFMIF objectives. The study has been based on the analysis and comparison of the main expected irradiation parameters in IFMIF and DEMO reactor

    Study on the response of IFMIF fission chambers to mixed neutron-gamma fields: PH-2 experimental tests

    The engineering design of fissionchambers as on-line radiation detectors for IFMIF is being performed in the framework of the IFMIF-EVEDA works. In this paper the results of the experiments performed in the BR2 reactor during the phase-2 of the foreseen validation activities are addressed. Two detectors have been tested in a mixedneutron-gamma field with high neutron fluence and gamma absorbed dose rates, comparable with the expected values in the HFTM in IFMIF. Since the neutron spectra in all BR2 channels are dominated by the thermal neutron component, the detectors have been surrounded by a cylindrical gadolinium screen to cut the thermal neutron component, in order to get a more representative test for IFMIF conditions. The integrated gamma absorbed dose was about 4 × 1010 Gy and the fast neutron fluence (E > 0.1 MeV) 4 × 1020 n/cm2. The fissionchambers were calibrated in three BR2 channels with different neutron-to-gamma ratio, and the long-term evolution of the signals was studied and compared with theoretical calculation

    Tritium permeation experiment at IFMIF Medium Flux Test Module

    Tritium release experiments using different breeding material candidates are planned for the medium flux region of the IFMIF Test Cell. Nowadays, only ceramic breeder materials have been suggested to be tested in the Tritium Release Module located in the Medium Flux Test Module of IFMIF. Liquid breeder blankets are very promising and for that reason, several concepts will be tested in ITER. One of the main problems concerning the liquid blankets is the permeation of the generated tritium in the breeder throughout the walls. Since tritium permeation is highly influenced by irradiation conditions, IFMIF is a suitable scenario to perform tritium permeation related experiments. In this paper, a preliminary design of a tritium permeation experiment for the Medium Flux Test Module of IFMIF is proposed, in order to contribute to the progress of the liquid breeder blanket concept validation. The conceptual design of the capsule in which the experiment will be performed is carried out, taking into consideration the experiment necessities and its implementation in the Tritium Release Module.     Percutaneous Endovascular Treatment of Innominate Artery Lesions

    AbstractPurposeTo assess primary success and safety of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and/or stenting of innominate artery lesions and to compare its 30-day stroke/mortality level with the literature data.MethodsA total of 72 patients (77 stenoses, five recurrent, 58 symptomatic and 39 female) with seven innominate vessel occlusions, nine subocclusive lesions and 61 significant (>60%) stenoses of innominate artery treated between 2000 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. With the exception of seven, all procedures were performed using a transfemoral approach. A stent was implanted in 49 (63.6%) cases. Follow-up included neurological examination, carotid duplex scan and office/telephone interview.ResultsPrimary technical success was 93.5% (72/77). There was neither periprocedural (<48h) death, nor major neurological complication. Minor periprocedural neurological complications consisted of 2/72 (2.6%) ipsilateral TIAs. Access site complications included 4 (5.2%) access site bleedings. Follow-up was achieved in 65/72 (90.3%) of all patients and 68 (88.3%) of all procedures for a mean of 42.3 months and revealed neither major neurological complication, nor additional TIA.The cumulative primary patency rate was 100% at 12 months, 98±1.6% at 24 months, and 69.9±8.5% at 96 months. The cumulative secondary patency rate was 100% at 12 and at 24 months, and 81.5±7.7% at 96 months. Log-rank test showed no significant difference (p=0.79) in primary cumulative patencies between PTA alone (n=28) or PTA/stent (n=49).ConclusionTransfemoral PTA with or without stent appears to be a safe treatment option for innominate artery lesions

    On the establishment and range expansion of oriental weatherfish (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) in NE Iberian Peninsula

    Oriental weatherfish has become an invasive fish species in many temperate areas. In this work we report the presence of an established weatherfish population in northeastern Iberian Peninsula and describe, for the first time in Europe, a clear range expansion. The species was first located in the Ebro River Delta in 2001 and has since been detected in 31 UTM 1 × 1 km quadrates. The capture of over 1,000 weatherfish shows that its population is composed by both juvenile and adult individuals. Weatherfish occupies mostly the web of irrigation channels associated with rice culture, although it has also been detected in rice fields and in the Ebro River. The expansion of the species in the area seems to be limited by water conductivity. An additional location for the species in the Ter basin (some 300 km to the north) suggests that inter-basin expansion could be occurring. This new fish invasion reinforces the need to implement strict controls to the trade and culture of ornamental fish.Peer reviewe

    Hierarchical Model Predictive Control in Fusion Reactors

    Nuclear fusion still has to pass several milestones on its way to successful energy production, one of them being successful plasma stabilization. The present article presents an innovative control implementation related to plasma control for the generation of electricity with magnetically confined plasma. The implementation has been carried out over a specific device of tokamak type, called Tokamak it Configuration Variable (TCV). This novel hybrid control design allows for real time implementation of an optimal model predictive control over a large scale complex system with small time constant. At each closed loop iteration, the full model is first controlled by a straightforward controller, then the output values are used for model reduction so that finally the discretized control system is optimized only for the variables of interest. In the case of the TCV, this novel hybrid model predictive control enhances the power availability on the actuators and extends the pulse duration. Thus, this control strategy will help to achieve fusion energy stated goal of "ignition", where nuclear fusion generates as much energy as it is needed to start the reaction
