    When resources collide: Towards a theory of coincidence in information spaces

    This paper is an attempt to lay out foundations for a general theory of coincidence in information spaces such as the World Wide Web, expanding on existing work on bursty structures in document streams and information cascades. We elaborate on the hypothesis that every resource that is published in an information space, enters a temporary interaction with another resource once a unique explicit or implicit reference between the two is found. This thought is motivated by Erwin Shroedingers notion of entanglement between quantum systems. We present a generic information cascade model that exploits only the temporal order of information sharing activities, combined with inherent properties of the shared information resources. The approach was applied to data from the world's largest online citizen science platform Zooniverse and we report about findings of this case study

    Vascularization and odontode structure of a dorsal ridge spine of Romundina stellina Ørvig 1975

    There are two types of dermal skeletons in jawed vertebrates: placoderms and osteichthyans carry large bony plates (macromery), whereas chondrichthyans and acanthodians are covered by small scales (micromery). Fin spines are one of the last large dermal structures found on micromeric taxa and offer a potential source of histology and morphology that can be compared to those found on macromeric groups. Dermal fin spines offer a variety of morphology but aspects of their growth modes and homology are unclear. Here, we provide detailed descriptions of the microstructure and growth of a dorsal ridge spine from the acanthothoracid placoderm, Romundina stellina, using virtual three-dimensional paleohistological datasets. From these data we identify several layers of dentine ornamentation covering the lateral surfaces of the spine and reconstructed their growth pattern. We show that this spine likely grew posteriorly and proximally from a narrow portion of bone located along the leading edge of the spine. The spine is similarly constructed to the scales with a few exceptions, including the absence of polarized fibers distributed throughout the bone and the presence of a thin layer of perichondral bone. The composition of the spine (semidentine odontodes, dermal bone, perichondral bone) is identical to that of the Romundina dermal plates. These results illustrate the similarities and differences between the dermal tissues in Romundina and indicate that the spine grew differently from the dentinous fin spines from extant and fossil chondrichthyans. The morphology and histology of Romundina is most similar to the fin spine of the probable stem osteichthyan Lophosteus, with a well-developed inner cellular bony base and star-shaped odontodes on the surface. Results from these studies will undoubtedly have impact on our understanding of fossil fin spine histology and evolution, contributing to the on-going revision of early gnathostome phylogeny

    Distribution of Spectral Lags in Gamma Ray Bursts

    Using the data acquired in the Time To Spill (TTS) mode for long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) collected by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (BATSE/CGRO), we have carefully measured spectral lags in time between the low (25-55 keV) and high (110-320 keV) energy bands of individual pulses contained in 64 multi-peak GRBs. We find that the temporal lead by higher-energy gamma-ray photons (i.e., positive lags) is the norm in this selected sample set of long GRBs. While relatively few in number, some pulses of several long GRBs do show negative lags. This distribution of spectral lags in long GRBs is in contrast to that in short GRBs. This apparent difference poses challenges and constraints on the physical mechanism(s) of producing long and short GRBs. The relation between the pulse peak count rates and the spectral lags is also examined. Observationally, there seems to be no clear evidence for systematic spectral lag-luminosity connection for pulses within a given long GRB.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

    Mass movement susceptibility mapping using satellite optical imagery compared with InSAR monitoring: Zigui County, Three Gorges region, China

    Mass movements on steep slopes are a major hazard to communities and infrastructure in the Three Gorges region, China. Developing susceptibility maps of mass movements is therefore very important in both current and future land use planning. This study employed satellite optical imagery and an ASTER GDEM (15 m) to derive various parameters (namely geology; slope gradient; proximity to drainage networks and proximity to lineaments) in order to create a GIS-based map of mass movement susceptibility. This map was then evaluated using highly accurate deformation signals processed using the Persistent Scatterer (PS) InSAR technique. Areas of high susceptibility correspond well to points of high subsidence, which provides a strong support of our susceptibility map

    Deformation monitoring of high-latitude permafrost region of northeastern China with time series inSAR technique

    Abstract. Permafrost distributed in northeast China is the only high-altitude permafrost in China. The deformation monitoring over this permafrost region is of great importance to local climate change and ecological environments. This study focuses on the deformation monitoring of high-latitude permafrost in northeast China with time series InSAR technique. The spatial distribution characteristics, the annual deformation rates and the temporal deformation evolutions of permafrost could be retrieved from multi-temporal InSAR processing with Sentinel-1 TOPS datasets. This work concludes that time series InSAR technique could help to retrieve a comprehensive and reliable permafrost deformation, while a long time-series of displacements facilitated to better understand permafrost kinematics.</p

    Extreme Sensitivity of Superconductivity to Stoichiometry in FeSe (Fe1+dSe)

    The recently discovered iron arsenide superconductors, which display superconducting transition temperatures as high as 55 K, appear to share a number of general features with high-Tc cuprates, including proximity to a magnetically ordered state and robustness of the superconductivity in the presence of disorder. Here we show that superconductivity in Fe1+dSe, the parent compound of the superconducting arsenide family, is destroyed by very small changes in stoichiometry. Further, we show that non-superconducting Fe1+dSe is not magnetically ordered down to low temperatures. These results suggest that robust superconductivity and immediate instability against an ordered magnetic state should not be considered as intrinsic characteristics of iron-based superconducting systems, and that Fe1+dSe may present a unique opportunity for determining which materials characteristics are critical to the existence of superconductivity in high Tc iron arsenide superconductors and which are not.Comment: Updated to reflect final version and include journal referenc

    The influence of net-quarks on the yields and rapidity spectra of identified hadrons

    Within a quark combination model, we study systematically the yields and rapidity spectra of various hadrons in central Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200 GeV. We find that considering the difference in rapidity between net-quarks and newborn quarks, the data of multiplicities, rapidity distributions for π±\pi^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) and, in particular the ratios of charged antihadron to hadron as a function of rapidity, can be well described. The effect of net-quarks on various hadrons is analysed, and the rapidity distributions for Ks0K^{0}_{s}, Λ(Λˉ)\Lambda(\bar{\Lambda}), Σ+(Σˉ)\Sigma^{+}(\bar{\Sigma}^{_-}), Ξ\mathrm{\Xi^{-}} (Ξˉ+\mathrm{\bar{\Xi}^{_+}}) and Ω(Ωˉ+)\mathrm{\Omega^{-}}(\mathrm{\bar{\Omega}}^{_+}) are predicted. We discuss the rapidity distribution of net-baryon, and find that it reflects exactly the energy loss of colliding nuclei.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Centrality dependence of pTp_{T} spectra for identified hadrons in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200 GeV

    The centrality dependence of transverse momentum spectra for identified hadrons at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200 GeV is systematically studied in a quark combination model. The pT\mathrm{{p}_{T}} spectra of π±\pi^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) and Λ(Λˉ)\Lambda(\bar{\Lambda}) in different centrality bins and the nuclear modification factors (RCPR_{CP}) for these hadrons are calculated. The centrality dependence of the average collective transverse velocity for the hot and dense quark matter is obtained in Au+Au collisions, and it is applied to a relative smaller Cu+Cu collision system. The centrality dependence of pT\mathrm{{p}_{T}} spectra and the RCPR_{CP} for π0\pi^{0}, Ks0K_{s}^{0} and Λ\Lambda in Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200 GeV are well described. The results show that <β(r)><\beta (r)> is only a function of the number of participants NpartN_{part} and it is independent of the collision system.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Evolution of Hard X-Ray Spectra Along the Branches in Cir X-1

    Using the data from the PCA and HEXTE on board the RXTE satellite, we investigate the evolution of the 3-200 keV spectra of the peculiar low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) Cir X-1 along the branches on its hardness-intensity diagram (HID) from the vertical horizontal branch (VHB), through the horizontal horizontal branch (HHB) and normal branch (NB), to the flaring branch (FB). We detect a power-law hard component in the spectra. It is found that the derived photon indices (Γ\Gamma) of the power-law hard component are correlated with the position on the HID. The power-law component dominates the X-ray emission of Cir X-1 in the energy band higher than 20\sim 20 keV. The fluxes of the power-law component are compared with those of the bremsstrahlung component in the spectra.     Study of color connections in e+ee^+ e^- annihilation

    We replace in the event generator JETSET the color singlet chain connection with the color separate state one as the interface between the hard and soft sectors of hadronic processes. The modified generator is applied to produce the hadronic events in e+ee^+ e^- annihilation. It describes the experimental data at the same level as the original JETSET with default parameters. This should be understood as a demonstration that color singlet chain is not the unique color connection. We also search for the difference in special sets of three-jet events arising from different color connections, which could subject to further experimental test.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, Revtex
