Three-dimensional measurement of object surfaces with complex shape and color distribution based on projection of color fringe patterns

A challenging issue associated with three-dimensional (3D) fringe patterns profilometry (FPP) is the unwrapping of phase maps resulting from color object surfaces. This paper proposes a new colorprojection-based 3D FPP, making use of the three primary color channels [i.e., red, green, and blue (RGB)] associated with digital projectors. One channel (e.g., red) is used for projecting sinusoidal fringes required by phase shift profilometry (PSP); the other two channels are employed for generating binary stripe patterns. In order to achieve reliable phase unwrapping, each fringe of the sinusoidal patterns is identified by a unique binary sequence. These sequences are then encoded by a channel-encoding scheme used in the area of communication. The encoded sequences are embedded in the binary coding stripe images, which are projected together with the sinusoidal patterns. The three image patterns are reflected by the object surface and captured by an RGB 3-CCD camera. The reflected sinusoidal patterns are employed to yield a wrapped phase map, and the binary stripe patterns are used to retrieve the encoded sequences, which are then decoded to yield the original binary sequences for phase unwrapping. Compared with existing color-encoded algorithms, the proposed approach uses binary codes instead of fringe color to identify the fringes, which are less sensitive to the disturbances caused by object surface color and illumination noises. Furthermore, use of the channel-coding scheme provides extra resistance to the disturbances caused by object surface color and illumination noises. Experimental results are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique

A Gyro Signal Characteristics Analysis Method Based on Empirical Mode Decomposition

It is difficult to analyze the nonstationary gyro signal in detail for the Allan variance (AV) analysis method. A novel approach in the time-frequency domain for gyro signal characteristics analysis is proposed based on the empirical mode decomposition and Allan variance (EMDAV). The output signal of gyro is decomposed by empirical mode decomposition (EMD) first, and then the decomposed signal is analyzed by AV algorithm. Consequently, the gyro noise characteristics are demonstrated in the time-frequency domain with a three-dimensional (3D) manner. Practical data of fiber optic gyro (FOG) and MEMS gyro are processed by the AV method and the EMDAV algorithm separately. The results indicate that the details of gyro signal characteristics in different frequency bands can be described with the help of EMDAV, and the analysis dimensions are extended compared with the common AV. The proposed EMDAV, as a complementary tool of the AV, which provides a theoretical reference for the gyro signal preprocessing, is a general approach for the analysis and evaluation of gyro performance

Structures of heat shock factor trimers bound to DNA

Summary: Heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and 2 (HSF2) play distinct but overlapping regulatory roles in maintaining cellular proteostasis or mediating cell differentiation and development. Upon activation, both HSFs trimerize and bind to heat shock elements (HSEs) present in the promoter region of target genes. Despite structural insights gained from recent studies, structures reflecting the physiological architecture of this transcriptional machinery remains to be determined. Here, we present co-crystal structures of human HSF1 and HSF2 trimers bound to DNA, which reveal a triangular arrangement of the three DNA-binding domains (DBDs) with protein-protein interactions largely mediated by the wing domain. Two structural properties, different flexibility of the wing domain and local DNA conformational changes induced by HSF binding, seem likely to contribute to the subtle differential specificity between HSF1 and HSF2. Besides, two more structures showing DBDs bound to “two-site” head-to-head HSEs were determined as additions to the published tail-to-tail dimer-binding structures

Systematic biases in determining dust attenuation curves through galaxy SED fitting

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve (δ\delta) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation (AVA_V) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope (β0\beta_0) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting β0\beta_0 for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of β0<2.2\beta_0<-2.2 for a starburst of constant star formation. Our results show that strong degeneracies between β0\beta_0, δ\delta, and AVA_V in the SED fitting induce systematic biases leading to a false AVA_V--δ\delta correlation. Our simulation tests reveal that this relationship can be well reproduced even when a flat AVA_V--δ\delta relation is taken to build the input model galaxy SEDs. The variations in best-fitting δ\delta are dominated by the fitting errors. We show that assuming a starburst with constant star formation in SED fitting will result in a steeper attenuation curve, smaller degeneracy errors, and a stronger AVA_V--δ\delta relation. Our findings confirm that the AVA_V--δ\delta relation obtained through SED fitting is likely driven by the systematic biases induced by the fitting degeneracies between β0\beta_0, δ\delta, and AVA_V.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS, Comments welcome

Borrelidin Induces the Unfolded Protein Response in Oral Cancer Cells and Chop-Dependent Apoptosis

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common cancer affecting the oral cavity, and US clinics will register about 30,000 new patients in 2015. Current treatment modalities include chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, which often result in astonishing disfigurement. Cancers of the head and neck display enhanced levels of glucose-regulated proteins and translation initiation factors associated with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR). Previous work demonstrated that chemically enforced UPR could overwhelm these adaptive features and selectively kill malignant cells. The threonyl-tRNA synthetase (ThRS) inhibitor borrelidin and two congeners were discovered in a cell-based chemical genomic screen. Borrelidin increased XBP1 splicing and led to accumulation of phosphorylated eIF2α and UPR-associated genes, prior to death in panel of OSCC cells. Murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) null for GCN2 and PERK were less able to accumulate UPR markers and were resistant to borrelidin. This study demonstrates that UPR induction is a feature of ThRS inhibition and adds to a growing body of literature suggesting ThRS inhibitors might selectively target cancer cells.National Institutes of Health/[DE019678]/NIH/Estados UnidosInternational Cooperative Biodiversity Groups/[U01 TW007404]/ICBG/Estados UnidosUCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Básicas::Centro de Investigaciones en Productos Naturales (CIPRONA)UCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Básicas::Facultad de Ciencias::Escuela de Químic

However, how phagosomes transmit signals to recruit mitochondria has remained unclear. Here we found that the kinases Mst1 and Mst2 functioned to control ROS production by regulating mitochondrial trafficking and mitochondrion-phagosome juxtaposition. Mst1 and Mst2 activated the GTPase Rac to promote Toll-like receptor (TLR)-triggered assembly of the TRAF6-ECSIT complex that is required for the recruitment of mitochondria to phagosomes. Inactive forms of Rac, including the human Rac2D57N mutant, disrupted the TRAF6-ECSIT complex by sequestering TRAF6 and substantially diminished ROS production and enhanced susceptibility to bacterial infection. Our findings demonstrate that the TLR-Mst1-Mst2-Rac signaling axis is critical for effective phagosome-mitochondrion function and bactericidal activity.Supported by the National Basic Research Program (973) of China (2015CB910502 to L.C.), China's 1000 Young Talents Program (D.Z. and L.C.), the 111 Projects (B12001 and B06016), the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of China-Xiamen University (CXB2014004 to J.Z.; 20720140551 to L.C.; and 2013121034 and 20720140537 to D.Z.), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (31270918, 81222030 and J1310027 to D.Z.; 81372617, 81422018 and U1405225 to L.C.; 81472229 to L.H.; and 81302529 to X.L.), the Natural Science Foundation of Fujian (2013J06011 to D.Z. and 2014D007 to X.L.), the US National Institutes of Health (RO1 CA136567 for J.A.) and institutional funds from Massachusetts General Hospital (for J.A.). Improved method for estimation of multiple parameters in self-mixing interferometry

    Get PDF
There are two categories of applications for self-mixing interference (SMI)-based sensing: (1) estimation of parameters associated with a semiconductor laser (SL) and (2) measurement of the metrological quantities of the external target. To achieve high resolution sensing, each category of applications requires knowledge from the other. This paper proposes an improved method that can simultaneously measure the parameters of an SL and the target movement in arbitrary form. Starting with the existing SMI model, we derive a new matrix equation for the measurement. The measurement matrix is built by employing all the available data samples obtained from an SMI signal. The total least squares estimation approach is used to estimate the parameters. The proposed method is verified by both simulations and experiments. (C) 2015 Optical Society of Americ
