Remote access for NAS: Supercomputing in a university environment
The experiment was designed to assist the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Project Office in the testing and evaluation of long haul communications for remote users. The objectives of this work were to: (1) use foreign workstations to remotely access the NAS system; (2) provide NAS with a link to a large university-based computing facility which can serve as a model for a regional node of the Long-Haul Communications Subsystem (LHCS); and (3) provide a tail circuit to the University of Colorado a Boulder thereby simulating the complete communications path from NAS through a regional node to an end-user
Fabry-Perot Measurements of the Dynamics of Globular Cluster Cores: M15 (NGC~7078)
We report the first use of the Rutgers Imaging Fabry-Perot Spectrophotometer
to study the dynamics of the cores of globular clusters. We have obtained
velocities for cluster stars by tuning the Fabry-Perot to take a series of
narrow-band images at different wavelengths across one of the Na D (5890 AA)
absorption lines. Measuring the flux in every frame yields a short portion of
the spectrum for each star simultaneously. This proves to be a very efficient
method for obtaining accurate stellar velocities; in crowded regions we are
able to measure hundreds of velocities in 3-4 hours of observing time. We have
measured velocities with uncertainties of less than 5 km/s for 216 stars within
1.5' of the center of the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078). The paper is a

Eight-band calculations of strained InAs/GaAs quantum dots compared with one, four, and six-band approximations
The electronic structure of pyramidal shaped InAs/GaAs quantum dots is
calculated using an eight-band strain dependent Hamiltonian. The
influence of strain on band energies and the conduction-band effective mass are
examined. Single particle bound-state energies and exciton binding energies are
computed as functions of island size. The eight-band results are compared with
those for one, four and six bands, and with results from a one-band
approximation in which m(r) is determined by the local value of the strain. The
eight-band model predicts a lower ground state energy and a larger number of

Absence of correlation between built-in electric dipole moment and quantum Stark effect in InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots
We report significant deviations from the usual quadratic dependence of the
ground state interband transition energy on applied electric fields in
InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots. In particular, we show that conventional
second-order perturbation theory fails to correctly describe the Stark shift
for electric field below kV/cm in high dots. Eight-band calculations demonstrate this effect is predominantly due to
the three-dimensional strain field distribution which for various dot shapes
and stoichiometric compositions drastically affects the hole ground state. Our
conclusions are supported by two independent experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Whom to Punish? How observers sanction norm-violating behavior in ostracism situations
When observing ostracism, individuals can either side with the target or the sources of ostracism. Here we demonstrate that side-taking depends on whether the target previously acted in adherence to or in violation of perceived social norms. In four studies, a target behaved either norm-consistently or violated a social norm, and was subsequently either excluded by the sources or was not. Next, participants could sanction the behavior of the observed persons by refraining to assign money (Studies 1 and 2), or by subtracting money from a bonus (Studies 3 and 4). Observers assigned less money to the sources when these excluded a norm-consistent target. However, when the target had violated a social norm before, participants assigned less money to the target instead. These results have far-reaching implications because the (in)actions of neutral individuals can legitimize the sources' behavior, or help a target under attack
Intuitionistc probability and the Bayesian objection to dogmatism
Given a few assumptions, the probability of a conjunction is raised, and the probability of its negation is lowered, by conditionalising upon one of the conjuncts. This simple result appears to bring Bayesian confirmation theory into tension with the prominent dogmatist view of perceptual justification – a tension often portrayed as a kind of ‘Bayesian objection’ to dogmatism. In a recent paper, David Jehle and Brian Weatherson observe that, while this crucial result holds within classical probability theory, it fails within intuitionistic probability theory. They conclude that the dogmatist who is willing to take intuitionistic logic seriously can make a convincing reply to the Bayesian objection. In this paper, I argue that this conclusion is premature – the Bayesian objection can survive the transition from classical to intuitionistic probability, albeit in a slightly altered form. I shall conclude with some general thoughts about what the Bayesian objection to dogmatism does and doesn’t show
