    Window acoustic study for advanced turboprop aircraft

    An acoustic analysis was performed to establish window designs for advanced turboprop powered aircraft. The window transmission loss requirements were based on A-weighted interior noise goals of 80 and 75 dBA. The analytical results showed that a triple pane window consisting of two glass outer panes and an inner pane of acrylic would provide the required transmission loss and meet the sidewall space limits. Two window test articles were fabricated for laboratory evaluation and verification of the predicted transmission loss. Procedures for performing laboratory tests are presented

    The shortage of functional information compared to the abundance of sequence information characterizes todayā€™s situation in functional genomics. For many years the knock-down of a geneā€™s product has been the most powerful way of analysing its function. In addition to the complete knock-out by homologous recombination, several different techniques have been developed to temporarily knock down gene expression through methods based on specific sequence recognition, such as knockdown by antisense oligonucleotides, ribozymes, aptamers or RNAi. The ESF workshop on ā€˜Impact of Nucleic Acid Chemistry on Gene Function Analysisā€™ brought together researchers who use techniques that are different but highly related. It offered an opportunity for an in-depth discussion of recent progress and common problems. Antisense oligonucleotides aptamers and ribozymes are techniques that have been used successfully for many years to validate targets. However, recent developments, such as increased tightness of binding (e.g. locked nucleic acids) or the combination of different methods (e.g. using aptamers to design ribozymes), have continued to improve the existing techniques. RNA interference (RNAi) is a defence mechanism of the cell against viruses. Since the exact mechanism of action within the cell is still unclear, RNAi was a particularly exciting topic at the workshop and was addressed in the largest number of presentations. Predictability of positional effects (accessibility of RNA) is a problem shared by all techniques using sequence-specific recognition and was the subject of quite controversial debates. The meeting comprised over 50 people from 14 countries (13 European countries and the USA)

    There has been considerable recent interest in the life cycle of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the Covid-19 pandemic. Practically every step in CoV replicationā€”from cell attachment and uptake via genome replication and expression to virion assembly has been considered as a specific event that potentially could be targeted by existing or novel drugs. Interference with cellular egress of progeny viruses could also be adopted as a possible therapeutic strategy; however, the situation is complicated by the fact that there is no broad consensus on how CoVs find their way out of their host cells. The viral nucleocapsid, consisting of the genomic RNA complexed with nucleocapsid proteins obtains a membrane envelope during virus budding into the lumen of the intermediate compartment (IC) at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)ā€“Golgi interface. From here, several alternative routes for CoV extracellular release have been proposed. Strikingly, recent studies have shown that CoV infection leads to the disassembly of the Golgi ribbon and the mobilization of host cell compartments and protein machineries that are known to promote Golgi-independent trafficking to the cell surface.     Development and testing of cabin sidewall acoustic resonators for the reduction of cabin tone levels in propfan-powered aircraft

    The use of Helmholtz resonators to increase the sidewall transmission loss (TL) in aircraft cabin sidewalls is evaluated. Development, construction, and test of an aircraft cabin acoustic enclosure, built in support of the Propfan Test Assessment (PTA) program, is described. Laboratory and flight test results are discussed. Resonators (448) were located between the enclosure trim panels and the fuselage shell. In addition, 152 resonators were placed between the enclosure and aircraft floors. The 600 resonators were each tuned to a propfan fundamental blade passage frequency (235 Hz). After flight testing on the PTA aircraft, noise reduction (NR) tests were performed with the enclosure in the Kelly Johnson Research and Development Center Acoustics Laboratory. Broadband and tonal excitations were used in the laboratory. Tonal excitation simulated the propfan flight test excitation. The resonators increase the NR of the cabin walls around the resonance frequency of the resonator array. Increases in NR of up to 11 dB were measured. The effects of flanking, sidewall absorption, cabin absorption, resonator loading of trim panels, and panel vibrations are presented. Resonator and sidewall panel design and test are discussed

    AbstractThree of the original Norwegian lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) deficiency families have been investigated for mutations in the gene for lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase by DNA sequencing of the exons amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. A single Tā†’A transversion in codon 252 in exon 6 converting Met(ATG) to Lys(AAG) was observed in all homozygotes. In spite of the identical mutation, the disease phenotypes differed in severity. This was not reflected in the expression of LCAT in the heterozygotes

    The development of a tool to assess medical studentsā€™ non-technical skillsā€“The Norwegian medical studentsā€™ non-technical skills (NorMS-NTS)

    Purpose - New physicians need to master non-technical skills (NTS), as high levels of NTS have been shown to increase patient safety. It has also been shown that NTS can be improved through training. This study aimed to establish the necessary NTS for Norwegian medical students to create a tool for formative and summative assessments. Methods - Focus group interviews were conducted with colleagues and patients of newly graduated physicians. Interviews were then analyzed using card sort methods, and the identified NTS were used to establish a framework. Focus groups commented on a prototype of an NTS assessment tool. Finally, we conducted a search of existing tools and literature. The final tool was developed based on the combined inputs. Results - We created Norwegian medical studentsā€™ non-technical skills (NorMS-NTS) assessment tool containing four main categories; together comprising 13 elements and a rating scale for the NTS of the person observed. Conclusions - The NorMS-NTS represents a purpose-made tool for assessing newly graduated physiciansā€™ NTS. It is similar to existing assessment tools but based on domain-specific user perspectives obtained through focus group interviews and feedback, integrated with results from a literature search, and with consideration of existing NTS tools
