    How Stands Collapse II

    I review ten problems associated with the dynamical wave function collapse program, which were described in the first of these two papers. Five of these, the \textit{interaction, preferred basis, trigger, symmetry} and \textit{superluminal} problems, were discussed as resolved there. In this volume in honor of Abner Shimony, I discuss the five remaining problems, \textit{tails, conservation law, experimental, relativity, legitimization}. Particular emphasis is given to the tails problem, first raised by Abner. The discussion of legitimization contains a new argument, that the energy density of the fluctuating field which causes collapse should exert a gravitational force. This force can be repulsive, since this energy density can be negative. Speculative illustrations of cosmological implications are offered.Comment: 37 page

    A Machine Checked Model of Idempotent MGU Axioms For Lists of Equational Constraints

    We present formalized proofs verifying that the first-order unification algorithm defined over lists of satisfiable constraints generates a most general unifier (MGU), which also happens to be idempotent. All of our proofs have been formalized in the Coq theorem prover. Our proofs show that finite maps produced by the unification algorithm provide a model of the axioms characterizing idempotent MGUs of lists of constraints. The axioms that serve as the basis for our verification are derived from a standard set by extending them to lists of constraints. For us, constraints are equalities between terms in the language of simple types. Substitutions are formally modeled as finite maps using the Coq library Coq.FSets.FMapInterface. Coq's method of functional induction is the main proof technique used in proving many of the axioms.Comment: In Proceedings UNIF 2010, arXiv:1012.455

    A TLA+ Proof System

    We describe an extension to the TLA+ specification language with constructs for writing proofs and a proof environment, called the Proof Manager (PM), to checks those proofs. The language and the PM support the incremental development and checking of hierarchically structured proofs. The PM translates a proof into a set of independent proof obligations and calls upon a collection of back-end provers to verify them. Different provers can be used to verify different obligations. The currently supported back-ends are the tableau prover Zenon and Isabelle/TLA+, an axiomatisation of TLA+ in Isabelle/Pure. The proof obligations for a complete TLA+ proof can also be used to certify the theorem in Isabelle/TLA+

    Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Progression as Surrogate Marker for Cardiovascular Risk Meta-Analysis of 119 Clinical Trials Involving 100 667 Patients

    Background: To quantify the association between effects of interventions on carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) progression and their effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Methods: We systematically collated data from randomized, controlled trials. cIMT was assessed as the mean value at the common-carotid-artery; if unavailable, the maximum value at the common-carotid-artery or other cIMT measures were used. The primary outcome was a combined CVD end point defined as myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization procedures, or fatal CVD. We estimated intervention effects on cIMT progression and incident CVD for each trial, before relating the 2 using a Bayesian meta-regression approach. Results: We analyzed data of 119 randomized, controlled trials involving 100 667 patients (mean age 62 years, 42% female). Over an average follow-up of 3.7 years, 12 038 patients developed the combined CVD end point. Across all interventions, each 10 μm/y reduction of cIMT progression resulted in a relative risk for CVD of 0.91 (95% Credible Interval, 0.87–0.94), with an additional relative risk for CVD of 0.92 (0.87–0.97) being achieved independent of cIMT progression. Taken together, we estimated that interventions reducing cIMT progression by 10, 20, 30, or 40 μm/y would yield relative risks of 0.84 (0.75–0.93), 0.76 (0.67–0.85), 0.69 (0.59–0.79), or 0.63 (0.52–0.74), respectively. Results were similar when grouping trials by type of intervention, time of conduct, time to ultrasound follow-up, availability of individual-participant data, primary versus secondary prevention trials, type of cIMT measurement, and proportion of female patients. Conclusions: The extent of intervention effects on cIMT progression predicted the degree of CVD risk reduction. This provides a missing link supporting the usefulness of cIMT progression as a surrogate marker for CVD risk in clinical trials

    Exploring Takfir, Its Origins and Contemporary Use: The Case of Takfiri Approach in Daesh’s Media

    Muslims have been the primary targets of Daesh’s attacks since 2014 in different countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. These attacks were based on its takfiri ideology. As Daesh official media and documents indicate, kufr (unbelief, infidelity) in Daesh’s approach is not limited to non-Muslims (original disbelievers), but Muslims are the most significant parts of kuffar (unbelievers) in its view and defined as incidental disbelievers. Through studying Daesh’s official documents and various Arabic, English, and Persian media productions, in an explanatory research, this article attempts to display Daesh’s takfiri approach toward Muslims and explains its historical and ideological roots, difference with Al-Qaeda’s takfiri approach, different approaches to takfir inside Daesh, main targets of Daesh’s takfir, and the reasons behinds its takfiri view. This article displays that for Daesh, the Muslims are limited only to Sunni Muslims who are accepting and following its approach. Other Sunni and non-Sunni Muslims are thus kuffar. This study also shows that the assertion of takfir has become a method for Daesh to discredit its opponents, such as Shi’a Muslims and other Muslim groups

    Characterization of a Low Affinity Thyroid Hormone Receptor Binding Site within the Rat GLUT4 Gene Promoter

    Previous studies have demonstrated that thyroid hormone (T3) stimulates insulin-responsive glucose transporter (GLUT4) transcription and protein expression in rat skeletal muscle. The aim of the present study was to define a putative thyroid hormone response element (TRE) within the rat GLUT4 promoter and thus perhaps determine whether T3 acts directly to augment skeletal muscle GLUT4 transcription. To this end, electrophoretic mobility shift analyses were performed to analyze thyroid hormone receptor (TR) binding to a previously characterized 281-bp T3-responsive region of the rat GLUT4 promoter. Indeed, within this region, a TR-binding site of the standard DR+4 TRE variety was located between bases −457/−426 and was shown to posses a specific affinity for in vitro translated TRs. Interestingly, however, the GLUT4 TR-binding site demonstrated a significantly lower affinity compared to a consensus DR+4 TRE, and only bound TRs appreciatively in the form of high affinity heterodimers, in this case with the cis-retinoic acid receptor. In conclusion, these data demonstrated the presence of a specific TR-binding site within a T3-responsive region of the rat GLUT4 promoter and thus support the supposition that thyroid hormone acts directly to stimulate GLUT4 transcription in rat skeletal muscle. Moreover, characterization of a novel TR-binding site with low affinity suggests an additional mechanism by which the intrinsic activity and responsiveness of thyroid hormone regulated genes may be modulated
