Normally and abnormally functioning left-sided porcine bioprosthetic valves after long-term implantation in patients: Distinct spectra of histologic and histochemical changes

This morphologic study (X-ray examination of gross specimens, histologic study and histochemical staining) compares two groups of explanted left-sided biopros-thetic valves: group 1,6 valves with normal cusp function and group II, 10 valves with significant dysfunction. Implantation periods ranged from 26 to 79 months. A computerized descriptive statistical method (principal component analysis) is used to analyze the qualitative results. Although qualitatively identical alterations are observed in both groups, the findings in the deep layers of the cusps of severe collagen breakdown, intensive fibrin penetration and various degrees of calcification are restricted to group II. Other findings of interest in both groups include amyloid deposits (four cases) and layering of fusiform host cells on the cusp surface (three cases). The computerized study shows that individuals of one clinical group are morphologically different from those of the other. Mechanical stress may contribute to surface alterations early after implantation, while further collagen breakdown and macrophagic activity result in deep penetration of plasma components and fibrin. Subsequent calcification is likely to be dystrophic rather than metabolic. Colonization of the cuspal surface by endothelial cells after long-term implantation of bioprosthetic valves expresses a new type of relation between host and bioprosthesis

In this Collective Article on “New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records”, we present additional records of species found in the Mediterranean Sea. These records refer to eight different countries mainly throughout the northern part of the basin, and include 28 species, belonging to five Phyla. The findings per country include the following species: Spain: Callinectes sapidus and Chelidonura fulvipunctata; Monaco: Aplysia dactylomela; Italy: Charybdis (Charybdis) feriata, Carcharodon carcharias, Seriola fasciata, and Siganus rivulatus; Malta: Pomacanthus asfur; Croatia: Lagocephalus sceleratus and Pomadasys incisus; Montenegro: Lagocephalus sceleratus; Greece: Amathia (Zoobotryon) verticillata, Atys macandrewii, Cerithium scabridum, Chama pacifica, Dendostrea cf. folium, Ergalatax junionae, Septifer cumingii, Syphonota geographica, Syrnola fasciata, Oxyu- richthys petersi, Scarus ghobban, Scorpaena maderensis, Solea aegyptiaca and Upeneus pori; Turkey: Lobotes surinamensis, Ruvettus pretiosus and Ophiocten abyssicolum. In the current article, the presence of Taractes rubescens (Jordan & Evermann, 1887) is recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean from Italy. The great contribution of citizen scientists in monitoring biodiversity records is reflected herein, as 10% of the authors are citizen scientists, and contributed 37.5% of the new findings.peer-reviewe

INDICATIONS CHIRURGICALES DANS LE TRAITEMENT DES MALADIES DE L'ORIFICE AORTIQUE

Aortic valve diseases are either of congenital etiology or secondary to rheumatic, subacute bacterial or degenerative involvement. Lesions, even severe ones, might be symptomless, often for prolonged periods. The indications for surgical treatment are based on well defined clinical, radiological, electrocardiographic and hemodynamic criteria. The existence of dyspnea, angina, and pulmonary edema indicates immediate surgical treatment. With the exception of congenital stenoses which are curable by conservative operations, all the other aortic valve diseases when they reach the surgical stage, require valve replacement by an artificial or a biological valve. Because of the imperfection of these valvular substitutes, this treatment should be considered as palliative and as such be confined to the treatment of lesions which endanger patients' life. In spite of these restrictions, valve replacement constitutes an important progress in the treatment of aortic valve diseases.SCOPUS: NotDefined.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Challenges of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery in 1958

The Cardiology Foundation supported by the perspicacious Princess Lilian was created in 1958. As an introduction to this symposium, the challenges that the cardiologist and surgeon encountered in 1958, are recalled as well as the essential problems requiring solutions in that era of evolving cardiac surgery.SCOPUS: cp.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
