    Adecuación y revisión de la propuesta museológica del Museo Veterinario Complutense

    Trascurridos unos años de la creación del Museo Veterinario Complutense de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, se plantean en la presente comunicación la revisión de su adecuación museológica y la propuesta museográfica de unos fondos tan peculiares como significativos. Nos encontramos con un conjunto heterogéneo compuesto de más de 3000 piezas que incluye patrimonio histórico, científico y artístico procedente de los diversos campos de la Veterinaria como ciencia y profesión. En la presente comunicación se describen las posibilidades docentes y de investigación de estos fondos, los tipos de visitas e itinerarios seguidos en sus instalaciones, de acuerdo con el proyecto museológico actual; mostraremos los conjuntos patrimoniales preferidos según el tipo de público (escolar, universitario, público general, veterinarios jubilados, expertos e investigadores, visitas institucionales, etc.) y las visitas incluidas en programas de difusión como la Semana de la Ciencia, dirigidas a público escolar de educación primaria y secundaria. Teniendo en cuenta las observaciones y análisis de estas visitas, se programarán las futuras posibilidades de difusión en las que se podrá buscar la colaboración con asociaciones y entidades de diversa naturaleza. Por otra parte, se estudian las ventajas e inconvenientes de la implicación de los estudiantes en los museos universitarios a partir de la experiencia en el Museo que nos ocupa.En este sentido, se describen las colaboraciones en la catalogación, estudio de las piezas, su conservación y restauración, los proyectos de diseño y montaje de exposiciones y las tareas de difusión de las colecciones que se han llevado a cabo hasta ahora. Finalmente, se describen los retos asociados con los problemas de seguridad y conservación que influirán en las nuevas propuestas

    The Effect of Regular Intake of Dry-Cured Ham Rich in Bioactive Peptides on Inflammation, Platelet and Monocyte Activation Markers in Humans.

    Background and aims: Dietary studies have shown that active biopeptides provide protective health benefits, although the mediating pathways are somewhat uncertain. To throw light on this situation, we studied the effects of consuming Spanish dry-cured ham on platelet function, monocyte activation markers and the inflammatory status of healthy humans with pre-hypertension. Methods: Thirty-eight healthy volunteers with systolic blood pressure of >125 mmHg were enrolled in a two-arm crossover randomized controlled trial. Participants received 80 g/day dry-cured pork ham of >11 months proteolysis or 100 g/day cooked ham (control product) for 4 weeks followed by a 2-week washout before "crossing over" to the other treatment for 4 more weeks. Soluble markers and cytokines were analyzed by ELISA. Platelet function was assessed by measuring P-selectin expression and PAC-1 binding after ADP (adenosine diphosphate) stimulation using whole blood flow cytometry. Monocyte markers of the pathological status (adhesion, inflammatory and scavenging receptors) were also measured by flow cytometry in the three monocyte subsets after the interventional period. Results: The mean differences between dry-cured ham and cooked ham followed by a time period adjustment for plasmatic P-selectin and interleukin 6 proteins slightly failed (p = 0.062 and p = 0.049, respectively), notably increased for MCP-1 levels (p = 0.023) while VCAM-1 was not affected. Platelet function also decreased after ADP stimulation. The expression of adhesion and scavenging markers (ICAM1R, CXCR4 and TLR4) in the three subsets of monocytes was significantly higher (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: The regular consumption of biopeptides contained in the dry-cured ham but absent in cooked ham impaired platelet and monocyte activation and the levels of plasmatic P-selectin, MCP-1 and interleukin 6 in healthy subjects. This study strongly suggests the existence of a mechanism that links dietary biopeptides and beneficial health effects

    Desde hace tiempo la Unión Europea busca y fomenta la cooperación entre la Universidad y los Institutos de Educación Secundaria para el desarrollo de futuras carreras científicas. Después de varios proyectos de investigación competitivos desarrollados por separado, hemos encontrado importantes confluencias entre el patrimonio custodiado por la Universidad Complutense y el IES San Isidro; ambas instituciones cuentan con una larga historia y atesoran un patrimonio científico, artístico y educativo de gran interés que es necesario conectar y poner en valor. La universidad ha desarrollado varios programas de cooperación en varios niveles y muchas de ellos planteaban mostrar y experimentar con el fin de descubrir, propuesta en la que queremos ahondar y avanzar a través del patrimonio educativo

    Stability and interaction analysis in islanded power systems including VSC-HVDC and LCC-HVDC power converters

    Islanded power systems are often connected to larger mainland power systems using HVDC cables. These interconnections are used to import power at lower cost compared to local generation and improve the security of supply. The increase of HVDC interconnectors in islanded systems will allow the reduction of local synchronous generation, which might lead to new interaction and stability problems due to the low inertia and short-circuit power available in the system. Traditionally LCC-HVDC technology has been used to connect island grids, but recently VSCs are presented as an alternative solution that offers more controllability to the islanded grid. Therefore, in order to increase the power transfer to the islands multi-infeed hybrid HVSC systems with VSCs and LCCs might become a common solution. The introduction of VSCs in islanded systems will allow operations in weak grids, but possible interactions with LCCs must be analysed in detail. This paper introduces the potential interactions in multi-infeed HVDC systems with LCCs and VSCs. An initial benchmark model of an islanded power system with a LCC and a VSC-HVDC link is presented to analyse new interaction phenomena between the converters and the islanded AC grid. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC are presented to validate the benchmark model for voltage stability and commutation failure analysis.Postprint (published version

    In Vivo Genotoxicity Evaluation of a Stilbene Extract Prior to Its Use as a Natural Additive: A Combination of the Micronucleus Test and the Comet Assay

    Genotoxic data of substances that could be used as food additives are required by the European Food Safety Authority. In this sense, the use of an extract from grapevine shoots containing a stilbene richness of 99% (ST-99), due to its antioxidant and antibacterial activities, has been proposed as an alternative to sulfur dioxide in wine. The aim of this work was to study, for the first time, the in vivo genotoxic effects produced in rats orally exposed to 90, 180, or 360 mg ST-99/kg body weight at 0, 24, and 45 h. The combination of micronucleus assay in bone marrow (OECD 474) and standard (OECD 489) and enzyme-modified comet assay was used to determine the genotoxicity on cells isolated from stomach, liver, and blood of exposed animals. The ST-99 revealed no in vivo genotoxicity. These results were corroborated by analytical studies that confirm the presence of stilbenes and their metabolites in plasma and tissues. Moreover, to complete these findings, a histopathological study was performed under light microscopy in liver and stomach showing only slight modifications in both organs at the highest concentration used. The present work confirms that this extract is not genotoxic presenting a good profile for its potential application as a preservative in the wine industry.España Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad and INIA RTA2015-00005-C02-0

    El presente trabajo tiene por objeto presentar el proceso seguido en la elaboración de una serie videográfica constituida por tres videos didácticos, que abordan los aspectos fundamentales de los riesgos derivados de la exposición a sustancias químicas y agentes biológicos en un labo - ratorio universitario. dicho material didáctico innovador, se utilizará en los seminarios teóricos de la asignatura seguridad Química, impartida por los profesores del área de toxicología de la universidad de sevilla. los objetivos fundamentales de dichos videos han sido despertar el mayor interés posible y favorecer la asimilación de conceptos básicos en el alumnado de dicha asignatura, haciendo especial hincapié en la correcta y segura manipulación, el adecuado almacenamiento y la correcta eliminación de las sustancias, contribuyendo en definitiva a la prevención de los riesgos derivados de su exposición.The present work aims to illustrate the process followed to elaborate a set of three didactic illustrate the process followed to elaborate a set of three didactic videos, which shows the main aspects of derived risks from the exposure to the chemical substances and biological agents present in a university laboratory. this innovator didactic material will be used in the subject “chemical security” seminaries lectured by the professors from toxicology area in the university of seville. the most important aims of these videos have been to implicate the students in their learning, making easier for them to assimilate the basic concepts of the subject, such as the correct and secure way of manipulate the chemical substances, its appropriate storage and its suitable elimination, contributing to the prevention of the risks derived from their exposure

    Childhood B-Cell Preleukemia Mouse Modeling

    Leukemia is the most usual childhood cancer, and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is its most common presentation. It has been proposed that pediatric leukemogenesis occurs through a “multi-step” or “multi-hit” mechanism that includes both in utero and postnatal steps. Many childhood leukemia-initiating events, such as chromosomal translocations, originate in utero, and studies so far suggest that these “first-hits” occur at a far higher frequency than the incidence of childhood leukemia itself. The reason why only a small percentage of the children born with such preleukemic “hits” will develop full-blown leukemia is still a mystery. In order to better understand childhood leukemia, mouse modeling is essential, but only if the multistage process of leukemia can be recapitulated in the model.     In vitro toxicological assessment of an organosulfur compound from Allium extract: Cytotoxicity, mutagenicity and genotoxicity studies

    Garlic (Allium sativum) and onion (Allium cepa) are being used in the food industry as flavoring but also for their antimicrobial activities. These activities are mainly derived from the organosulfur compounds (OSCs). Propyl propane thiosulfinate (PTS) is an OSC with potential use in the active packaging, but its safety should be guaranteed before being commercialized. The aim of this work was to investigate for the first time the cytotoxicity of PTS as well as its in vitro mutagenic/genotoxic potential using the following battery of genotoxicity tests:(1)the bacterial reverse-mutation assay in S. typhimurium (Ames test, OECD 471, 1997); (2) the micronucleus test (MN, OECD 487, 2016); (3) the mouse lymphoma thymidine-kinase assay (MLA, OECD 476, 2015), and (4) the comet assay (standard and modified with restriction enzymes). The results revealed that PTS was not mutagenic neither in the Ames test nor in MLA. However, genotoxic effects were recorded in the MN test on mammalian cells (L5178YTk+/−cells) after PTS exposure at the highest concentration tested (17.25 μM) without S9, and also its metabolites (+S9, from 20 μM). Moreover, in the comet assay, PTS induced DNA breaks damage in Caco-2 cells at the highest concentration tested (280 μM) but it did not induce oxidative DNA damage.Spanish Ministry of Scienceand Innovation (AGL2012-38357-C02-01) co-financed by FEDER fundsJunta de Andalucía (AGR-7252
