INTECO Webmessenger: Study of the Usability in Instant Messaging Systems
The main aim of this project is dual. Firstly, it is to achieve a complete analysis of the necessities of disabled people on the Internet. Secondly, it is intended to develop an instant messaging system based on the Windows Live Messenger whose requirements are defined over the previous analysis. Objective measurement of Spanish emotion vocabulary
[EN]Current research on emotion knowledge and competence emphasises the role of language. Emotion vocabulary is one of the indicators of emotion knowledge that can be objectivelymeasured; however, the metric properties of the scores obtained in tests and tasks to measure it have seldom been adequate. In this study we designed and validated a Spanish emotion vocabulary test (MOVE) employing a corpus approach to construct cloze multiple-choice items, administered the test to a Spanish-speaking sample from two countries, Spain and Argentina, and analysed structural validity of the test items with the Rasch model measurement approach. Eighty-eight items showed adequate fit. Overall, a substantial percentage of variance was explained by a latent variable. Reliability indexes at the test, item, and person level were also adequate. As a vocabulary test, the MOVE can be used in psychological and neurological investigation, as well as in language learning research
Genomic analysis of DNA binding and gene regulation by homologous nucleoid-associated proteins IHF and HU in Escherichia coli K12.
IHF and HU are two heterodimeric nucleoid-associated proteins (NAP) that belong to the same protein family but interact differently with the DNA. IHF is a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein that bends the DNA by over 160°. HU is the most conserved NAP, which binds non-specifically to duplex DNA with a particular preference for targeting nicked and bent DNA. Despite their importance, the in vivo interactions of the two proteins to the DNA remain to be described at a high resolution and on a genome-wide scale. Further, the effects of these proteins on gene expression on a global scale remain contentious. Finally, the contrast between the functions of the homo- and heterodimeric forms of proteins deserves the attention of further study. Here we present a genome-scale study of HU- and IHF binding to the Escherichia coli K12 chromosome using ChIP-seq. We also perform microarray analysis of gene expression in single- and double-deletion mutants of each protein to identify their regulons. The sequence-specific binding profile of IHF encompasses ∼30% of all operons, though the expression of <10% of these is affected by its deletion suggesting combinatorial control or a molecular backup. The binding profile for HU is reflective of relatively non-specific binding to the chromosome, however, with a preference for A/T-rich DNA. The HU regulon comprises highly conserved genes including those that are essential and possibly supercoiling sensitive. Finally, by performing ChIP-seq experiments, where possible, of each subunit of IHF and HU in the absence of the other subunit, we define genome-wide maps of DNA binding of the proteins in their hetero- and homodimeric forms
Actas del Quinto Congreso Internacional sobre Minería y Metalurgia Históricas en el Suroeste Europeo (León - 2008) : libro en homenaje a Claude Domergue
Promover el estudio del patrimonio minero es uno de los objetivos estatutarios de la Sociedad Española para la Defensa del Patrimonio Geológico y Minero (SEDPGYM). Por ello, la Sociedad siempre ha apoyado los encuentros entre los especialistas como el que se presenta en este libro de actas. El estudio del patrimonio minero es una actividad compleja por la propia naturaleza del patrimonio involucrado, de manera que los puntos de vista desde los que puede abordarse son muchos y diversos. Consciente de ello, SEDPGYM organiza, con la colaboración de otras instituciones, los denominados simposios internacionales sobre Minería y Metalurgia Históricas en el Suroeste Europeo en los que tienen cabida los estudios e investigaciones relativos a la minería y metalurgia desde la Prehistoria hasta nuestros días, con especial atención a aquellos que son anteriores a la época moderna. El presente libro de actas recoge los trabajos de uno de estos congresos, concretamente el quinto, celebrado en León entre los días 19 y 21 de junio de 2008, y coorganizado con GEOMIN/APPI y la Universidad de León. Este congreso tuvo una significación especial porque, con él, SEDPGYM rindió un merecido homenaje a un hombre que es una autoridad indiscutible en el campo de la minería antigua, hasta el punto de que sus múltiples trabajos han creado escuela entre los arqueólogos actuales. Se trata de Claude Domergue, profesor emérito en la Universidad Toulouse-Le Mirail (Francia). Claude Domergue ha sido pionero en realizar el estudio sistemático de los yacimientos arqueológico-mineros ibéricos (ya que también ha dedicado su atención a Portugal), recorriendo una ingente cantidad de ellos y publicando varias e importantes obras de síntesis
Influence of climate change on the flowering of temperate fruit trees
It is well known that winter chilling is necessary for the flowering of temperate trees. The chilling requirement is a criterion for choosing a species or variety at a given location. Also chemistry products can be used for reducing the chilling-hours needs but make our production more expensive. This study first analysed the observed values of chilling hours for some representative agricultural locations in Spain for the last three decades and their projected changes under climate change scenarios. Usually the chilling is measured and calculated as chilling-hours, and different methods have been used to calculate them (e.g. Richarson et al., 1974 among others) according to the species considered. For our objective North Carolina method (Shaltout and Unrath, 1983) was applied for apples, Utah method (Richardson et al. 1974) for peach and grapevine and the approach used by De Melo-Abreu et al. (2004) for olive trees. The influence of climate change in temperate trees was studied by calculating projections of chilling-hours with climate data from Regional Climate Models (RCMs) at high resolution (25 km) from the European Project ENSEMBLES (http://www.ensembles-eu.org/). These projections will allow for analysing the modelled variations of chill-hours between 2nd half of 20C and 1st half of 21C at the study locations
Characterization of Pediococcus ethanolidurans CUPV141: A b-D-glucan- and Heteropolysaccharide-Producing Bacterium
Pediococcus ethanolidurans CUPV141 is an exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing lactic acid bacterium, first isolated from Basque Country cider (Spain). Physicochemical analysis of the EPS synthesized by the bacterium revealed that CUPV141 produces mostly a homopolysaccharide (HoPS), characterized as a 2-substituted (1,3)-beta-D-glucan, together with a small quantity of a heteropolysaccharide (HePS) composed of glucose, galactose, glucosamine, and glycerol-3-phosphate, this being the first Pediococcus strain described to produce this kind of polymer. On the contrary, an isogenic strain CUPV141NR, generated by chemical mutagenesis of CUPV141, produced the HePS as the main extracellular polysaccharide and a barely detectable amount of 2-substituted (1,3)-beta-D-glucan. This HoPS is synthesized by the transmembrane GTF glycosyltransferase (GTF), encoded by the gtf gene, which has been previously reported to be located in the pPP2 plasmid of the Pediococcus parvulus 2.6 strain. Southern blot hybridization revealed that in CUPV141 the gtf gene is located in a plasmid designated as pPE3, whose molecular mass (34.4 kbp) is different from that of pPP2 (24.5 kbp). Analysis of the influence of the EPS on the ability of the producing bacteria to adhere to the eukaryotic Caco-2 cells revealed higher affinity for the human enterocytes of CUPV141NR compared to that of CUPV141. This result indicates that, in contrast to the 2.6 strain, the presence of the HoPS does not potentiate the binding ability of P. ethanolidurans. Moreover, it supports that the phosphate-containing bacterial HePS improved the interaction between P. ethanolidurans and the eukaryotic cells.This work was supported by a grant from the Department of Environment, Territorial Planification, Agriculture and Fishing and the project no. Assessment of anogenital distance as a diagnostic tool in polycystic ovary syndrome

Case-control study conducted between September 2014 and May 2016 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University Clinical Hospital 'Virgen de la Arrixaca' in the Murcia region (south-eastern Spain). One hundred and twenty-six cases of PCOS and 159 controls without PCOS were included. AGD measurements were taken from the anterior clitoral surface to the upper verge of the anus (AGDAC), and from the posterior fourchette to the upper verge of the anus (AGDAF). Parametric and non-parametric tests and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess associations between AGD and the presence of PCOS and its phenotypes. AGDAC, but not AGDAF, was associated with PCOS and all its phenotypes (P-values < 0.001 to 0.048). The highest area under the curve (0.62; 95% confidence interval 0.55 to 0.71) was obtained for all PCOS with AGDAC with a sensitivity and specificity of 50.0% and 73.0%, and positive and negative predictive value of 59.0% and 64.4%, respectively. AGDAC could moderately discriminate the presence of PCOS and may be a useful clinical tool
Preparation of marine silage of swordfish, ray and shark visceral waste by lactic acid bacteria
The goal of the present work was to study the efficacy of several lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as bio-silage inoculants of swordfish, ray and shark viscera by-products. A sterilised medium was initially used as a model system for assessing the potential of these microorganisms in batch and fed-batch cultures with re-neutralisation. In all cases, batch cultivations without re-neutralisation led to the highest production and yields of the main metabolites of LAB fermentation (lactic and acetic acids). The dynamics of these metabolites followed a conversion pattern from lactic to acetic acid with a final joint concentration over 16 g/L and final pH lower than 4.5. Both productions were modelled by means of logistic modified equations. In addition, the capability of LAB to ferment the fish visceral wastes was always high and easily reproducible. Finally, the results obtained for non-sterilised fermentations with Lactobacillus casei CECT 4043 were similar to those obtained for sterilised media, and a stable material was obtained after 72 h of culture.Peer reviewe
Guanosine inhibits hepatitis C virus replication and increases indel frequencies, associated with altered intracellular nucleotide pools
In the course of experiments aimed at deciphering the inhibition mechanism of mycophenolic acid and ribavirin in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, we observed an inhibitory effect of the nucleoside guanosine (Gua). Here, we report that Gua, and not the other standard nucleosides, inhibits HCV replication in human hepatoma cells. Gua did not directly inhibit the in vitro polymerase activity of NS5B, but it modified the intracellular levels of nucleoside di- and tri-phosphates (NDPs and NTPs), leading to deficient HCV RNA replication and reduction of infectious progeny virus production. Changes in the concentrations of NTPs or NDPs modified NS5B RNA polymerase activity in vitro, in particular de novo RNA synthesis and template switching. Furthermore, the Gua-mediated changes were associated with a significant increase in the number of indels in viral RNA, which may account for the reduction of the specific infectivity of the viral progeny, suggesting the presence of defective genomes.
